to think that starting work on your house on a bank holiday is anti-social

Our neighbour is very elderly and has advanced dementia so he's moving into a care home. Recently they have had gardeners in clearing the over grown garden and so on to prepare the house for sale. Today they have had workmen in since 8am who are taking out all of the rotten windows and doors and replacing them with new windows and bifold doors and have some others in cutting down trees in the front and back garden so it's very noisy with chainsaws, drills and hammering going on.

AIBU to be annoyed at all the noise on a day when we're trying to relax and enjoy our garden?

Why is everyone being so hostile towards the OP?

Because OP asked 'AIBU'?

Mumsnet said 'yes'

OP replied 'no I am not'

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 20:26

OP tells poster to 'fuck off' because OP isn't happy that poster thinks OP is BU.

BookwormMe2 · 19/04/2019 20:26

Okay, I posted at the same time F-off comment appeared. Way to go to win people over...

Gillian1980 · 19/04/2019 20:27

Nrtft

Yabu. Bank holiday weekends are known for being extremely popular times to do diy etc! Especially when the weather is good.

I popped into Homebase earlier and it was absolutely heaving, the staff were frazzled and said it’s always like that on BHs.

Babuchak · 19/04/2019 20:29

Because OP asked 'AIBU'?

Mumsnet said 'yes'

OP replied 'no I am not'

ahem, not quite, some posters replied YABU, but others replied YANBU at all. There are rules and regulations about building work, ultimately what some posters think and what the facts are seem to be completely different on this thread.

youknowmedontyou · 19/04/2019 20:30

@Babuchak you missed out one VITAL word I put which was MOST! Shock

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 20:30

'Mumsnet said' means the majority surely?

BookwormMe2 · 19/04/2019 20:32

Yabu. Bank holiday weekends are known for being extremely popular times to do diy etc!

Replacing every window and frame in a house is not DIY! That takes professional fitters who could've easily been booked to come on a normal working day.

Unless mine and my OH's DIY skills are so shit that while we're arguing over putting a picture frame up everyone else is knocking up a three-bed house?

Passthecherrycoke · 19/04/2019 20:39

Some people who do DIY on their own house are professionals. Or like, both mine and DHs dads are in the trades so could come over and do serious building work. You don’t have to be paying a company to make noise.

Anyway OP is so aggressive I’m surprised she didn’t go round there and beat the shit out of the lot of them TBH

polarpig · 19/04/2019 20:41

So aggressive? Saying 'fuck off'

you have no idea what i am like as a person

OP posts:
BookwormMe2 · 19/04/2019 20:44

Yes, you're right about professionals doing their own DIY Passthecherrycoke, but in OP's original post she did say the family had scarpered while the contractors turned up to work. Having endured an entire day of loud drilling noise from builders ourselves, I can see why she's so wound up now. It's not DIY when it's contractors turning up mob handed to work.

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 20:47

you have no idea what i am like as a person

We have a good idea....

polarpig · 19/04/2019 20:48

OK...what am I like then?

OP posts:
Passthecherrycoke · 19/04/2019 20:50

Agreed bookworm but what actual difference does it make whether a contractor is bashing out the window frames and cutting down the trees or a DIY-er? The noise is the same and that’s the point many are making

BookwormMe2 · 19/04/2019 20:50

Christ, don't give them the satisfaction of asking that, OP! It'll be like poking a wasps' nest.

BookwormMe2 · 19/04/2019 20:54

The noise created by a DIYer hacking down a tree themselves with a saw won't be as loud as a tree surgeon using a professional power saw to remove it and then putting the branches through a chipper. Same with windows being replaced.

BookwormMe2 · 19/04/2019 20:55

It's also besides the point. Reasonable DIY is permitted by councils on bank holidays - professional building work isn't.

bumblenbean · 19/04/2019 21:00

I agree it’s annoying but if the old chap’s kids are having to move him into a care home they probably have lots to do and consideration for the neighbours is probably pretty low down on their list of priorities 🤷🏻‍♀️

MargaretOfAnjou · 19/04/2019 21:03

"We haven't had any building work done and don't play loud music, have motorbikes or noisy children or have parties, fireworks and so on"

You need to live make some noise OP!

ShabbyAbby · 19/04/2019 21:07

It is frustrating when you want a lie in and the neighbours don't oblige but that's life, unfortunately. So long as it's within normal hours (I think most councils have rules on noise being 7am to 11pm or something? Not sure exactly) I don't think you have a leg to stand on unfortunately

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 19/04/2019 21:13

I get why you're annoyed. My DP and I both work nights sometimes and we're always woken up by our downstairs neighbour at 6am everytime. Yes it's annoying so YANBU to be annoyed however I don't think they are being UR.

They're working and they've got every right to work on a bank holiday and 8am isn't that bad unless you went to bed at 4am but that isn't their problem, just like it isn't my neighbours problem.

MoreCookiesPlease · 19/04/2019 21:16

YABU, and swearing at other Mumsnet users is disgraceful. You've started a thread to ask if you're being unreasonable about something. Several have told you that, in their opinion, you are being unreasonable. And so you resort to swearing at them? Hmm.

As others have said, it's one day of noise as the neighbours try to prepare a house for a sale. Big deal. At least you don't have to deal with noisy or inconsiderate neighbours every single day - this incident seems to be a one off? They probably want to proceed with a sale quickly in order to pay the care home fees for their poor father. The world doesn't revolve around you and your relaxation. Noise comes as part and parcel of having neighbours. Right now, our neighbours are still playing music and finishing off their BBQ in the garden. If you never wanted a noisy bank holiday ever, you should have moved to somewhere where you could live in isolation.

SometimesAlwaysNever · 19/04/2019 21:19

As my contract says " bank holidays are standard working days".

I do not do not work for emergency services or retail, but hey I still have to work ☹️

Ohyesiam · 19/04/2019 21:19

It’s not a bank holiday. Bank holidays are only on Monday.

ElloBrian · 19/04/2019 21:19

Lots of goady responders on this thread. Unfortunately this is the worst of MN. Walk away OP. It isn’t worth the time and hassle. Any reasonable person would sympathise with your frustration in this situation.
