to think that starting work on your house on a bank holiday is anti-social

Our neighbour is very elderly and has advanced dementia so he's moving into a care home. Recently they have had gardeners in clearing the over grown garden and so on to prepare the house for sale. Today they have had workmen in since 8am who are taking out all of the rotten windows and doors and replacing them with new windows and bifold doors and have some others in cutting down trees in the front and back garden so it's very noisy with chainsaws, drills and hammering going on.

AIBU to be annoyed at all the noise on a day when we're trying to relax and enjoy our garden?

My local hospital moves patients around at the weekends and furthermore during bank holiday because of reduced staffing, so all patients who could not be discharged are gathered together. It is a small hospital, but let's not pretend there's no bank holiday in the hospital sector shall we.

Unless you have an emergency, you won't have been given an appointment today, will you.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/04/2019 14:12

Bank holidays are all about home improvements! Usually DIY but I’d be getting builders in if needed

gamerwidow · 19/04/2019 14:12

Just because some people work on a bank holiday it doesn’t make it not a bank holiday.
Those hospitals are staffed on Xmas Day too. No one expects building work then though do they.
Also funnily enough the staff don’t clock off at 5 o clock every night either so by that logic it’s fine for me to start diy work at midnight because the hospitals got staff it it.

Babuchak · 19/04/2019 14:13

It's not LEGAL in many counties for noisy builders to disrupt the neighbourhood on bank holidays and Sundays! A kitchen refit does not qualify as an emergency.

You will struggle more to complain against a DIY mad idiotic neighbour unfortunately, but a business has rules to follow.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/04/2019 14:21

Who cares about other countries? In some countries you’re not allowed washing lines. Doesn’t affect the washing line love in the U.K. Hmm

sweeneytoddsrazor · 19/04/2019 14:22

I am working today, tomorrow and monday. Stop moaning and be glad you can spend time with your family

Babuchak · 19/04/2019 14:23

COUNTIES Passthecherrycoke counties, not countries -- England countries! The ones I am in right now for example Grin

Babuchak · 19/04/2019 14:24

I am working today, tomorrow and monday.
I am working too, that's why I am on MN today, it doesn't give other people the right to be antisocial.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/04/2019 14:31

Well same principle. Makes no difference unless you live in one of those area s

Babuchak · 19/04/2019 14:35

Makes no difference unless you live in one of those area s
which is why the OP was advised to check the rules stated on a local council website...

I have lived in 3 different counties in the fairly recent past, they all expressly regulated the hours of noise. It wouldn't be so surprising if the same rules apply to where the OP is, I wish for her it does.

Trills · 19/04/2019 14:42

Doing DIY or gardening is a traditional Bank Holiday activity where I'm from.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/04/2019 14:43

Yes I have also lived in such a council. It’s not an emergency service though, they’re likely to just pop a warning letter in the post Tuesday.

woodhill · 19/04/2019 14:44

It's obviously Good Friday so I think it is a bank holiday. There is no post today.

I think it is a bit much yanbu

proudestofmums · 19/04/2019 14:49

What got to me about builders nearby recently was not so much the noise their works made, which I didn’t like but have to put up with, as pp say BUT THE LOUD NOISE OF THEIR RADIO which I could hear 2 gardens away! Grr!

Squeegle · 19/04/2019 14:53

YANBU - builders are not allowed to make any noise on Sundays or Bank holidays, for the obvious reason that it is inconsiderate. My neighbours are having work done - very noisy which obviously I just live with. But fortunately the builders are not there today - if they had been I would have complained .

HBStowe · 19/04/2019 14:54

YANBU - surely it could be done on normal working days?!

LaurieFairyCake · 19/04/2019 15:20

What's funny about this is the total toothlessness of councils

If they have a rule of 'No Bank Holiday' working but themselves aren't working to enforce it - what exactly is the point Confused

Backwoodsgirl · 19/04/2019 15:24

It’s their house, just like you they should be free to do as they please.

Unfortunately the UK is overpopulated so neighbors annoy each other

FatFreda · 19/04/2019 15:29

I hear you and am suffering a similar fate but bank holidays are always budy for home improvements.
I have 2 A level students in revising. I'm in the garden enjoying my first of 2 days off in 6 weeks whilst next door are jack hammering their concerted back garden.

I am beyond pissed off but it's what people do on bank holidays if they are at home and not having bbqs.

I've just been to my local homebase to look at masonry paint for redo my garage exterior . It took me 55 minutes to get out of the car park. DIY is on the agenda for many.

I agree it's an odd day to start a project but if it's a friend in the trade helpingtgem out then this is when they'll squeeze in mates and favours. Next doors brother is a builder and he turned up 8.30 with the jack hammer!!
I'm trying hard not to let my pissed oddness ruin my day in the sun in my garden.

flameycakes · 19/04/2019 15:38

Stick some thrash metal on and drown them out x

NannyRed · 19/04/2019 15:42

Yes, yanbu.

NannyRed · 19/04/2019 15:42

Yabvu

BestZebbie · 19/04/2019 15:59

Surely long bank holiday weekends are the main traditional time to do DIY?

Certainly all advertising for Homebase, B&Q etc ramps up before each one...

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 19/04/2019 16:04

Their dad has advanced dementia and needs to go to a home, but you are worrying about peace and quiet!
Yh, YABU!!!

Oblomov19 · 19/04/2019 16:07

Bank holiday weekends, or Easter weekend is the perfect time to get jobs done. YABU.
