to think that starting work on your house on a bank holiday is anti-social

Our neighbour is very elderly and has advanced dementia so he's moving into a care home. Recently they have had gardeners in clearing the over grown garden and so on to prepare the house for sale. Today they have had workmen in since 8am who are taking out all of the rotten windows and doors and replacing them with new windows and bifold doors and have some others in cutting down trees in the front and back garden so it's very noisy with chainsaws, drills and hammering going on.

AIBU to be annoyed at all the noise on a day when we're trying to relax and enjoy our garden?

OP posts:

Bank holidays are generally subject to Sunday rules about construction work by the way. Which means it’s not at all unreasonable to complain about noise. The exact rule depends on your local authority OP so have a look on your council website.
Sorry if someone has posted this already but I can’t be bothered wading through ten pages of goady fuckers.

The thing is, our council doesn’t work today. So it doesn’t matter what the rules are here, there’s no-one to complain to. It may well be the same for the OP.

So in this situation you can either let the day be ruined or accept that there’s going to be noise and don’t miss out.

Noise that you find inconvenient is part and parcel of having neighbours.

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 21:30

Ello

Are you just going round the boards skating people who don't agree with OP's?

Nicknacky · 19/04/2019 21:30

Given the circumstances of the renovation I think you would have to be a particular type of areshole to complain about one day of noise.

Life happens.

Bonkersblond · 19/04/2019 21:45

We had a brickie through our builders working on our house today, self employed with a young family and high rent to pay. I certainly didn’t have problem with this although we didn’t expect anyone in until next Tuesday. Not everyone has a job where they get paid holidays.

ElloBrian · 19/04/2019 21:49

Hi Englishdictionary what an appropriate name. Would you like some assistance with your spelling?

Decormad38 · 19/04/2019 21:51

He probably doesn’t have much time left poor chap to do the work! You on the other hand...

PresidentHump · 19/04/2019 22:03

Yanbu. It doesn't really matter what this nest of vipers thinks - the builders are NOT ALLOWED to do work that results in you being able to hear it. They can work tomorrow morning, but not tomorrow afternoon or Sunday or bank holiday Monday. They are the fucking rules and anyone who thinks otherwise is thick or just here on a windup or both. YANBU. I would've complained.

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 22:04

I was just reading your post on another thread about you 'being better'

And here you are picking me up for what was clearly a typo and not a spelling error.

Being better my arse!

BookwormMe2 · 19/04/2019 22:10

Well said, PresidentHump.

BubblegumFactory · 19/04/2019 22:39

What thoroughly depresses me is the number of posters who don’t give a shit about the impact of noise on their neighbours. This ‘I’ll do what I damn well please and sod everyone else’ attitude is widespread, I wonder how we came to be like this.
Hell is other people indeed.

IncrediblySadToo · 19/04/2019 22:49

PresidentHump - where’s your link?

In Hampshire that applies to large developments. Not home DIY.

youknowmedontyou · 19/04/2019 22:50

OK...what am I like then?

Rude, objectionable and unable to see others points of view! You also seem bossy and immature telling me to fuck off because you don't agree with my comment.

IncrediblySadToo · 19/04/2019 22:52

BubbleGum. People need to do stuff, they can’t do it when they’re at work, so they need to get on with it when they can. As long as they’re reasonable (say 9-9) then I think it just needs to be tolerated 🤷🏻‍♀️

youknowmedontyou · 19/04/2019 22:52

@PresidentHump for us fucking thick people please do show the link.

AppleBru · 19/04/2019 22:59

8am? One day.

You’re having a laugh, I’ve just endured 3 weeks of roadworks outside my hours 8pm-6pm. That’s something to moan about

Let it go!

myidentitymycrisis · 19/04/2019 23:12

I was woken at 7 this morning by next doors dog whining to be let out of his cage. At 8 workmen cleared others next doors garden with industrial strength strimmer. After 1 hour of strimming next door but one went out with his radio to do some hedge trimming for an hour or so. All good until 9,30 tonight when dog neighbors children are having a party in the back garden. I want to move.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 19/04/2019 23:24

Actually I know couple who did change windows by themselves Shock so DIY.

I agree 8am start is bit crap, but April and May are soooo busy for builders, there is no surprise of them working on Bank Holidays, or whatever today was

PresidentHump · 19/04/2019 23:36

@youknowmedontyou Here's your link

youknowmedontyou · 19/04/2019 23:39

@PresidentHump so it's not true then? I honestly thought with such an OTT comment you'd have something to substantiate it.... silly me!

PresidentHump · 19/04/2019 23:40

ODFOD.

youknowmedontyou · 19/04/2019 23:42

@PresidentHump you're name really suits you! We're you woken up too early this morning also?

All I asked for was a link.... Shock

mabelsgarden · 19/04/2019 23:47
Hmm
mabelsgarden · 19/04/2019 23:48

@Ohyesiam

It’s not a bank holiday. Bank holidays are only on Mondays.

You can't just make shit up you know. Hmm

Of COURSE good Friday is a Bank Holiday!!!

And not ALL bank holidays are on Mondays!

Read and learn..........

I despair at the ignorance (from some) on here!
