to think that starting work on your house on a bank holiday is anti-social

Our neighbour is very elderly and has advanced dementia so he's moving into a care home. Recently they have had gardeners in clearing the over grown garden and so on to prepare the house for sale. Today they have had workmen in since 8am who are taking out all of the rotten windows and doors and replacing them with new windows and bifold doors and have some others in cutting down trees in the front and back garden so it's very noisy with chainsaws, drills and hammering going on.

AIBU to be annoyed at all the noise on a day when we're trying to relax and enjoy our garden?

It might be bank holiday for you but it's a normal working day for millions of others - and not just doctors and nurses!

Retail is open as usual, so are restaurants, cafes, pubs, cinemas, bowling alleys and all sorts of other work environments. I'm a manager in retail and I'm up for work as usual all weekend including Easter Sunday.

Just because offices are shut doesn't mean people aren't up and about and going to work as normal!

polarpig · 19/04/2019 12:40

Good Friday is not a Bank Holiday. It is a Public Holiday. The NHS is still working.

So the banks are open on a bank holiday and the public 'servants' are at work? Logical....

This is from the government website:

www.gov.uk/bank-holidays

The next bank holiday in England and Wales is
today Good Friday

I'm in England therefore it's a Bank Holiday.

YABU. Buy ear defenders or noise cancelling headphones for noise-sensitive revisers. Hope they don't sell the house to a family with young kids and a trampoline, or a pool, or BBQ enthusiasts.

Nicknacky · 19/04/2019 12:43

Even if it is a bank holiday, the world doesn’t stop. People still have to earn a living.

And you are so dismissive of your neighbours horrible situation of a parent with dementia.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 19/04/2019 12:43

Two lots of neighbours are doing lots of noisy work at the moment. One of them is planned to go on until Oct! I don't love it but as long as they don't block my drive I just live with it. Can't you go out for a bit?

IncrediblySadToo · 19/04/2019 12:44

It’s ONE DAY stop being so utterly ridiculous.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 19/04/2019 12:44

Historically, people who work for a living only have weekends and evening to do their chores. Easter bank Holiday is a always the start of the Great Extension Build, you can see skips and scaffolding shooting up all over the area.

Seriously OP when do you expect people to work?

Get out, go to the seaside or something instead of cooping your child up

BTW someone should tell the government it isn't a bank holiday Hmm www.gov.uk/bank-holidays

Check your local council website. Most specify no noise on Sundays or bank holidays although some allow it at specific times eg 10am - 2pm. Show them the bylaw for your area and see what their reaction is. I don‘t think you are being unreasonable at all. We‘ve had a lot of work done on our house recently and the builders were never here outside of the hours allowed.

adaline · 19/04/2019 12:45

I'm in England therefore it's a Bank Holiday

Yes, for some people!

Millions of people are working today. I work in a tourist town and it's absolutely heaving with visitors - all coming into the shops and cafes and spending money, which means people have to work in those shops and cafes.

And yes, plenty of building firms are open today. I drove past a man up a scaffold this morning on my way in and there are plenty of work vans and lorries on the roads too.

The world doesn't stop just because offices are closed for the weekend.

Bluntness100 · 19/04/2019 12:46

I have workmen here today, they are on the last day of the job which has lasted several weeks. They were expected to work but get Monday off. My daughter was also woken where she is by builders working next door this morning, so I suspect most trades are working today.

Next door also has the gardeners in, and they are not being remotely quiet. I think for many people today is a normal working day op.

Hotterthanahotthing · 19/04/2019 12:50

We are sitting outside, neighbours are all doing their thing, lawn mowers, radio, hammering somewhere and children playing
DD has earphones in and is studying Macbeth,no problems.

AuntieMaggie · 19/04/2019 12:50

In my area noisy building work isn't allowed on Sundays or Bank Holidays and not before 10 on a Saturday so whether builders are still working or not is irrelevant.

SarahMused · 19/04/2019 12:51

They also specify just how much noise you can make in decibels. You can get an app for your phone which will measure how loud it is and that will give you an idea about how reasonable they are . Ones person‘s right to do work on their home does not trump the right of everyone around to enjoy their house and garden in peace on a bank holiday. That is why the are rules about what is reasonable and chainsawing at 8am on a bank holiday in a residential area isn‘t.

LoubyLou1234 · 19/04/2019 12:51

Today is a working day for many out bin men were out and about-well before 8am.

polarpig · 19/04/2019 12:52

* I'm in England therefore it's a Bank Holiday

Yes, for some people!*

It's still a Bank Holiday, some people work on Bank Holidays but that doesn't change it from being a bank holiday. I worked last night, that doesn't stop it from being night does it?

OP posts:
adaline · 19/04/2019 12:54

My point is for lots of people it's still a normal working day - they're out doing their normal jobs during normal working hours!

NoBaggyPants · 19/04/2019 12:55

some people work on Bank Holidays

You acknowledge it is a working day, so what's your problem?

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 12:56

Haha haha this is literally the funniest thing I have seen today Grin

lightsoul · 19/04/2019 13:04

I hope no one was disturbed when you were coming home at 4am.

Myheartbelongsto · 19/04/2019 13:07

We plan on doing loads of work on the house over the weekend!

Jb291 · 19/04/2019 13:09

You are not being at all unreasonable OP. People that do this to their neighbours are thoroughly inconsiderate twats

Nicknacky · 19/04/2019 13:12

To be honest, if I need to do work to my house or garden then I do it when suits me and the workers.

TheNavigator · 19/04/2019 13:13

I at work today, so is my DH. It’s not a holiday for everyone. Lucky you to have a day off - why not enjoy the sunshine & stop being such a sourpuss?

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/04/2019 13:21

My husband was out at 8am this morning washing and hoovering his car. Neighbours not happy at all. I did try telling him

Well from what you’ve said elsewhere TigersRoll, he was doing this on purpose wasn’t he? Your poor bloody neighbours. Your DH really is a world-class cunt. ☹️

Honeyroar · 19/04/2019 13:21

I didn't even realise it was Easter this weekend, I don't have children, am not religious and work bank holidays. Perhaps they're the same. Sometimes it's a case of when a workman can squeeze you in.

I can see it's annoying, but it's only for one day. It's not their fault that you finished work at 4am and therefore didn't get much sleep. I work funny shifts, and know exactly where you're coming from, but it's the downside of the job. Plus I know I over react when I'm tired.
