Coving fell on DD (2)

We're on holiday, 5* resort. This morning we were woken by a massive crash and found that 2 pieces of coving from the ceiling had fallen and landed on the bed where the DC were sleeping. Fortunately neither was hurt amazingly but they could have been seriously injured. We rang reception and reported it and when they didn't come within an hour we went for breakfast and when we came back the maintenance men were fixing it.
I feel we should be making a bit of a thing about it as it could have been more serious. What would you do?

It’s polystyrene coving. I very much doubt it’s checked routinely during maintenance or cleaning as it is a fixture on the ceiling. After all, I bet no one checks their own?

I don’t doubt the hotel will apologise but at the end of the day, it’s just one of those things.

An upgrade would be fantastic but only if it’s offered and suits the op to move rooms. I’ve moved hotel rooms and it’s a pain.

JacquesHammer · 19/04/2019 10:40

For me, I’d feel so guilty if transpired that later down the line someone injured or died due to poor maintenance

The OP has made them aware, maintenance are in the room. That is what I would expect.

How could you possibly then be guilty if it happened again.

Confused
thisisthetime · 19/04/2019 10:41

I would be appalled. For all those saying it’s kust an accident, that’s true but the op’s dc could have been seriously injured.

You would expect the hotel to be built to certain standards and I would personally want reassurances that everything was properly checked and maintanence being carried out when needed. I definitely wouldn’t be putting my children back to bed under that coving. Who knows if this isn’t the first time it’s happened.

I wouldn’t be interested in compensation but I expect my room to be safe on holiday or if an accident such as this does happen I would expect for the manager to come and apologise and discuss the incident. The fact that they don’t appear to have taken this very seriously or issued an apology to the op makes me think that they don’t have particularly high standards. What country are you in op? If you have travelled through an a travel agent I would also mention this to your rep in case it’s not the first time.

Mamabear12 · 19/04/2019 10:42

I would expect hotel management to come to you and apologise straight away at the very least!

Romax · 19/04/2019 10:50

Just me i suppose
I’d be worried it was indicative of something of poor maintenance
And I’d contact my UK travel agency.

I suppose I’m thinking about those British children that died due to carbon monoxide poisoning in their hotel room.

TSSDNCOP · 19/04/2019 10:57

Surely the safest place is now under the just-fixed coving?

It wasn’t a near-death experience. It was barely an experience.

ZazieTheBruce · 19/04/2019 11:06

@Ramoz

I liked lassoes faire- immediately thought “cowboy builders”.

Acis · 19/04/2019 11:07

Surely the safest place is now under the just-fixed coving?

What about the rest of it, though? And the coving elsewhere in the hotel?

IncrediblySadToo · 19/04/2019 11:12

Coving falling down seems pretty weird. I would want some reassurance that they’ll look into how that happened.

Plus I’d expect some compensation for the scare & inconvenience. Just dinner on them or something, not thousands, just a token to acknowledge it.

Nicknacky · 19/04/2019 11:13

Do you honestly expect them to check the coving in every hallway/room/restaurant just because a small amount fell off in one room?

The building isn’t going to fall down.

Acis · 19/04/2019 11:18

It would depend why it fell down, Nicknacky. If there was any indication that it might have fallen down due to bad workmanship in the original construction/decoration, absolutely I would, and I suspect their insurers would also. It's not as if falling coving is exactly a known hazard in public buildings, it's why we have building standards and safety legislation.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 19/04/2019 11:23

I'd like a proper apology and a free holiday ha ha.

Always one who wants something for nothing,.

Acis · 19/04/2019 11:36

I'm amazed at the number of people on here who seriously contend that if they were in a public building and bit of coving fell on them or their child, they'd just shrug it off and say "Accident, innit?" and carry on regardless. I bet that in reality they absolutely wouldn't.

Acis · 19/04/2019 11:37

Did you not notice the words "ha ha" in that quote, PlainSpeaking?

Nicknacky · 19/04/2019 11:39

acis Well, is it not an accident? I wouldn’t foresee something like that happening and given the op hasn’t said the hotel is a death trapped hovel then it is just one of those random, unexpected things.

No one was hurt.

Romax · 19/04/2019 11:46

@ZazieTheBruce

Like it!

Acis · 19/04/2019 12:06

People rarely foresee accidents caused by negligence, Nicknacky, but that doesn't stop them being down to negligence. Suppose you're driving and you crash because you looked the wrong way, presumably you didn't foresee that you were going to make that mistake but you (or your insurers) would still be liable for any damage you cause.

If you don't fix coving up properly, it is reasonably foreseeable that it will fall and that it may well cause injury, and you would be liable for the damage. If you run a hotel where this has happened, then unless you can establish that this is a one-off you clearly have a duty to check elsewhere. I know nothing about how you fix coving to the ceiling but if, say, this happened because of the use of defective fixative or a failure to put enough nails/screws in or whatever, you need to check that the same methods haven't been used throughout the hotel.

lovelilies · 19/04/2019 12:56

The free holiday remark was a joke, for goodness sake. If I could upload a picture I would, it was heavy at least 10 kg not just a piece like you get from B&Q!
We are in Turkey. We booked through holidays on the beach website I think (DP booked it).
They've stuck it back up now. I will speak to management later today.

Omg @myheart where would the OP find pieces of coving that big in a hotel in turkey to take a staged photo?

That’s really bad for that to fall like that!

Bluntness100 · 19/04/2019 13:08

I'm sure they will give you something as comp op. As clearly that's your objective.

The key question is was th hotel negligent. And i would assume not. It was an accident, but I'm sure they will give uou a gesture of good will if you're not an arsehole about it,

I'd want to speak to the manager, get an apology, new/better room and probably a free meal too.

lovelilies · 19/04/2019 13:11

@nyheart are you fucking serious?! Jesus wept
