To hate my accent?

Are you local? Asked the dentist.
Where are you originally from? asked my dog groomer

I am Cardiff born and bred. My parents are both from here for generations, speak welsh but don’t sound welsh when they speak english. My mum does a bit, like noticeable but my dad sounds southern english.

AIBU to hate my horrible, boring, southern english accent. When really I should sound welsh.

I only lived in the south for 3 year at cambridge for uni and 2 years then in london. Someone even thought they could tell I was from hertfordshire. Not sure if I’ve ever been there in my life.

Birmingham here. I would say there are people more brummie than me but you can certainly hear my accent.

I don't mind it really. Despite it being one of the most hated accents.

Not as posh as Edinburgh/Fife and further north but def posher than Glaswegian

Wow! Glaswegian here - there are posh Glaswegians and non posh people from Edinburgh and Fife.

GrandTheftWalrus · 19/04/2019 00:51

Glaswegian/Lanarkshire here.

Usually in shows everyone with my accent is alcoholics or bad people etc.

@poorbuthappy It would be interesting.... but scary?? I feel like MN is a dirty secret for me Grin So crossing that over with Real life would be strange! But actually nice to meet new people!

I’ve a Northern Irish accent - been in England since the 80s - it’s still quite strong - gives me a sense of authority too at work!

I've a friend from 'the people's republic of Cork' who has a lovely brogue.

He is very, well... Cork...though.

Arklow not only has an award winningly shit accent. It's an award winningly shit town.

Could not be out of there fast enough.

Liverpool on the other hand is brilliant. I fucking love it here, and scouse accents (some of them anyway) can be surprisingly pleasant

I'm a forester. I work in Wales.

Noone can understand me.

showmethegin · 20/04/2019 00:13

@FromageFrais that's so funny. I'm born and raised in Birmingham, and when I talk people always say that I don't sound like I'm from Birmingham then do a really over the top yam yam accent back to me. I'm always 'that's a completely different place!!' 😂

I am welsh so I can say this without being shot: not sounding welsh is probably a blessing. It's a rather comedic accent.
