Next Wednesday when it’s Thursday

Missmummy88 · 18/04/2019 15:34

If someone says what about next Wednesday when it’s Thursday does that mean the next Wednesday (6 days away) or this Wednesday is 6 days away next Wednesday is 13 days away.

6 days to me.

Missmummy88 · 18/04/2019 15:35

I know iabu for getting to 31 and still being confused by this Wednesday and next Wednesday

I would say next Wednesday is 6 days away. The one 13 days away is Wednesday after next

AnnieMay100 · 18/04/2019 15:36

I and everyone I know usually say it to mean the closest one so 6 days but double check

Louiselouie0890 · 18/04/2019 15:44

I would just say Wednesday so next Wednesday would be 13 days away but I rarely talk like that I just naturally say dates mainly because of the work I do

BenjiB · 18/04/2019 15:47

The next Wednesday so 6 days.

TotHappy · 18/04/2019 15:47

Could be either. I say and mean both at different times. Confusing! Or do you mean which is correct?

steff13 · 18/04/2019 15:49

Next Wednesday means the next Wednesday, 6 days away.

Now, if it was Wednesday, and someone said "next Thursday," I would presume that they mean the Thursday in the next week (otherwise they'd say tomorrow), 8 days away. However, technically, the next Thursday is 1 day away. I can see how that might be confusing.

PrincessDaff · 18/04/2019 15:51

Hahaha I get told off for this by my family. I would say THIS Wednesday if I meant 6 days away and next Wednesday if I meant the one 13 days away. I know I confuse a few people by this.

steff13 · 18/04/2019 15:52

Maybe saying something like "this coming Wednesday," would be more clear, since it implies it's the first Wednesday that's coming up.

NameChangeNugget · 18/04/2019 15:55

6 days time

(days before up to proceeding Thurs) - 'Day name just gone'
Wednesday = YESTERDAY
Thursday = TODAY
Friday = TOMORROW
(Sat Sun Mon Tues Wed) Day name
(Thurs Fri Sat Sun) Next - day name
(All days after) Day name - day of the month

Those are my rules and my hill to die on. Grin

SoftBlocks · 18/04/2019 16:03

Wednesday next week.

CupOhTea · 18/04/2019 16:04

I always thought it was the next Wednesday to come. So 6 days from now would be next Wednesday.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 18/04/2019 16:09

This Wednesday means the one coming (as in 6 days away), next Wednesday means the one after that.

NoSauce · 18/04/2019 16:13

Next Wednesday when it’s Thursday to me would mean 13 days, this Wednesday when it’s Thursday would be 6 days.

coolestmum · 18/04/2019 16:15

Next wednesday would be 6 days away. Although I have this argument with my dd so much and she would insist it would be 13 days away as to her the one coming up would be 'this' wednesday.

PuppyMonkey · 18/04/2019 16:15

This Wednesday is the Wednesday that takes place in this current week - ie the one that took place yesterday.

Next Wednesday takes place next week.

The "week" usually starts on a Monday. however, I was brought up a catholic and was taught the first day of the week is Sunday.

I hope that clears things up.GrinWink

As a local reporter for many years, I wasn't allowed to write about this Wednesday and next Wednesday. We'd have to write April 24 to be on the safe side.

BackforGood · 18/04/2019 16:23

I would say the one 6 days away, as it is the next day that is a Wednesday.
However, I know there are some people who get this wrong think differently, so I would clarify at the time.

CupOhTea · 18/04/2019 16:26

Sometimes I say “next Wednesday, the 24th”, just in case.

bridgetreilly · 18/04/2019 16:28

Next Wednesday because it's next week.

If it was Monday then the Wednesday two days later would be this Wednesday, because it's this week, and the one after that would be next Wednesdat because it's next week.

It's a bit trickier with Sundays because people have different ideas about when the week starts...

CupOhTea · 18/04/2019 16:29

Oh yeah actually... I think if it’s the same week I would probably say “this Wednesday coming”. Good point @bridgetreilly!

chemenger · 18/04/2019 16:31

It goes by the week. So the Wednesday in the same week as today is this Wednesday. Next week’s Wednesday is next Wednesday.

So on Friday I would say “I saw him this Wednesday”, meaning two days previously, and “I will see him next Wednesday” meaning in 5 days time.

The flaw in my logic is deciding whether weeks begin on Sunday or Monday.

Within a week, for days in the future, I would probably just say Wednesday, so on Monday I would say “I will see him on Wednesday”.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 18/04/2019 16:33

I tend to say "this [insert day name]" if I mean a day this week, and "next [insert day name]" if I mean a day the following week.

youngfreeandnotsingle · 18/04/2019 16:40

I would say this Wednesday for the one in 6 days and then next Wednesday for the one in 13
