Hi everyone

We are due to go on holiday to Turkey tomorrow but two out of my three kids have fallen Ill today. They both have sore throats and temperatures and have not eaten or drank much today. One of them has just complained that he feels sick.

We have been looking forward to this holiday for six months but I really don't want to take them in this state. Our flights are at 2pm tomorrow and I really don't know what to do. I need to think of a plan b just incase we have to end up cancelling.

Our flights are booked with easyjet and we do have travel insurance, what could my options be if I do cancel? I have only paid for one nights hotel stay and the rest would be paid on arrival.

Will my insurance company pay out? I feel like they both have some kind of virus but the last thing I want to do is take them abroad and be stuck in a hotel room.

Take your kids and have a nice holiday. If they feel rough give them some calpol. When they are at the resort the rest and warmth will do them and you good.

I really want to know what the issue is with ice cream??
Why can't you have ice cream if you have a bacterial infection? ???

When my son was about 6 he had a virus/cold just as we were flying to portugal. We gave him calpol and he slept in the hotel room and we read our books on the balcony in the sunshine . 24 hours later he was fine and enjoying his holiday.

@Cel982 I have, it's not even flu my GP has said! I've been on & off work now for a month. So annoying but luckily I can sometimes still work from home. I know a lot of people with similar atm and it really knocks you off your feet.

I don't know the reason why but when I developed bacterial tonsillitis on holiday the dr told me to have no cold drinks or ice cream only lukewarm drinks.

WatershedMoment · 18/04/2019 10:35

Wonder if the OP will report back??

There is nothing wrong with icecream when you have a cold! I think people were being sarcastic with their posts. Icecream is soothing on the throat aswell as ice lollies.

When my kids are ill, we have open policy on food/drink. If they want icecream they get icecream. It’s the worse being ill and not being allowed to eat the food you want.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 18/04/2019 10:56

If you are immunosuppressed you shouldn't get on a flight

Really?! Fuck me some people really are insanely selfish.

(I would absolutely take my children on holiday if they were mildly ill, I'd just be hyper vigilant around hand gels and tissues and anything else that would stop them passing anything on to me or anyone else)

Nuttyaboutnutella · 18/04/2019 11:07

I want ice cream now :(

How are they feeling this morning OP?

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 18/04/2019 11:34

If you are immuno-suppressed you shouldn't get on a flight

Or leave the house? Germs are everywhere? Why should getting on a flight be any different from, say, going to the GP's surgery, or to Tesco? Planes aren't the only place you can "catch" stuff.

bridgetosomewhere · 18/04/2019 11:47

I hope your dc are feeling better this morning and you managed to make your holiday.

I'm the same as you though, wouldn't go if they were poorly

Asvan · 18/04/2019 13:05

Hi all,

So both the DC had a good night's sleep and neither of them were sick so we decided to go for it! We are currently at the airport waiting to board. They both have mild temperatures so I've given them calpol. I think the excitement of the holiday is definitely keeping them upbeat.

Hopefully they stay well there and we have a good time.

Thanks all for your replies, I really didn't expect such a massive response!

@Asvan Hope it all works out & you have a great holiday, I'm sure they'll perk up!

Really glad to hear you're going. Have a great time.

Have an amazing holiday, OP. You've made the right call.

nelsonmuntzslingshot · 18/04/2019 13:19

OP I just wanted to say that my eldest DD had this at the weekend - really high temp, sore throat and two episodes of vomiting. It passed in 48 hours and she is as right as rain now. Just keep them topped up with Calpol.

Enjoy your holidays.

UCOinanOCG · 18/04/2019 13:22

Have a fab holiday.

It's being realistic. You cannot expect anyone else to not go about their lives because they have a cold. Almost every time I've done a long-haul flight (lots, ex-pat parents) I've ended up with a horrible cold because that's the way it is.

aweedropofsancerre · 18/04/2019 14:03

Have a great holiday!
