Hi everyone

We are due to go on holiday to Turkey tomorrow but two out of my three kids have fallen Ill today. They both have sore throats and temperatures and have not eaten or drank much today. One of them has just complained that he feels sick.

We have been looking forward to this holiday for six months but I really don't want to take them in this state. Our flights are at 2pm tomorrow and I really don't know what to do. I need to think of a plan b just incase we have to end up cancelling.

Our flights are booked with easyjet and we do have travel insurance, what could my options be if I do cancel? I have only paid for one nights hotel stay and the rest would be paid on arrival.

Will my insurance company pay out? I feel like they both have some kind of virus but the last thing I want to do is take them abroad and be stuck in a hotel room.

why don't you just phone your insurance company & ask them?

Sounds like you want people to tell you to go as it's what you want to hear

Having said that - I would go

Really glad you've made it to the airport Op. my husband's family still relive the time husband was so sick they stayed home and cancelled holiday, only for him to be running round the house 100 mph the next day. They were gutted as they lost the money too. Enjoy! Smile

Iloveacurry · 18/04/2019 14:35

Hope you have a fab holiday and they feel better soon!

BorisBadunov · 18/04/2019 16:45

I lost a dear friend who developed an infection while immunosuppressed. It was terribly sad. I was her next of kin, so had extensive discussions with doctors as she slipped in a coma.

What killed her was a bacteria called pseudomonas. If you are healthy (not immunosupressed), you would not even know that you have it, as it does not give any symptoms at all to people with a healthy immunity.

My point is, if you are immunosupressed, you need to take extreme care to avoid potential infections. Colds are the tip of the iceberg, it’s everything that is symptom-free that you also need to protect yourself from. I really don’t know how you can contemplate flying in that state. I’m not being selfish, I honestly don’t think it can be done without taking a huge risk.

To those who said plane toilets are the worst, actually the most germy parts are the upholstery on the seats, armrests and tables. Worse than the toilets.

Brilliant! Have a great holiday

notsodimwit · 18/04/2019 18:04

Op Smile been worried about you all dayGrin so pleased the kids have picked up a bit and you have gone on your well earned holiday xx relax and enjoy your time away Flowers

Delatron · 18/04/2019 18:21

The sunshine will do them good, lots of vitamin D. They can nap in the day.

Have a great holiday!

TessaL23 · 18/04/2019 18:24

I'd give them some medicine, put them to bed early tonight and go on with your plans tomorrow. I would only cancel if they were throwing up, etc. It's clearly a virus if they both have it and should go away soon.

TessaL23 · 18/04/2019 18:27

Sorry just saw the update, glad it all worked out 👍🏻👍🏻

YesQueen · 18/04/2019 18:57

@BorisBadunov I would take the risk because I'm going to be immunocompromised for life. So my choice is take the risk. Or never fly

BorisBadunov · 18/04/2019 19:20

That’s ok @YesQueen, clearly you have made your risk assessment and that’s fine. But equally I’m sure you know that there are always, absolutely always sick people on planes, and even if there weren’t, you might catch pseudo, ecoli or other germs from the plane itself.

Sorry about your condition btw - it must be extremely difficult. 💐

Asvan · 18/04/2019 22:02

Hi all, thanks for all the advice and well wishes.

The kids were fine on the journey here, I just kept them topped up with the calpol. I'm so proud of them as they didn't complain once even though they weren't their usual selves.

Both in bed now and I'm looking forward to enjoying my time here.

So far, I think I made the right decision.

Great news Asvan. Have a lovely holiday.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 18/04/2019 22:40

I am sure you did Asvan.
And thanks for updating us - so many posters don't. You have a great holiday and pat yourself on the back for making the right decision.

Aridane · 19/04/2019 06:03

Excellent- I was reading and posting in your thread yesterday from Heathrow and really hoping you would be going!

Well done for not letting your anxiety take over

Decormad38 · 19/04/2019 06:43

HoraceCope · 19/04/2019 06:50

WhoAteMyNuts · 19/04/2019 06:51

Glad you made the decision to go. Enjoy your holiday.

Ihatehashtags · 19/04/2019 07:48

I can’t believe you are even thinking about canceling for a sore throat. Kids nurofen , lots of fluids and go.

Hollowvictory · 19/04/2019 08:04

It was a sore throat. Total non event.

PineapplePatty · 19/04/2019 08:19

Have a great holiday, what's the weather like? I'm considering turkey in a few weeks but haven't been before.

Etino · 19/04/2019 08:21

So pleased you went!

Missingstreetlife · 19/04/2019 14:32

And remember, plenty of ice cream (tho dairy can make mucus, snotty nose worse). Enjoy

Mumsturn4 · 19/04/2019 17:27

We went to Turkey on the 6/4/19 one child had been off sick for a few days before we flew, one had a sore throat and a bad cold and the other threw up when we arrived at the hotel! Hope they’re feeling better and hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

Carriecakes80 · 19/04/2019 17:29

We had to cancel a trip we won to Disneyland a few years ago, was heartbreaking seeing the kids so upset, but theres no way I would take sick kids and travel and put others whose immunity might not be strong at risk just because I can't wait for a holiday.
It was gutting, but we were able to rebook for a year later! I do hope your kids are feeling better soon, its crap but why take the risk of a holiday spent with sick kids. x
