To feel sorry for this boy

Waiting for a boat taxi on the river bank with the DCs to go into town. there's another family, parents and two boys around 9 or 10 years old, the boys are jumping around and one knocks a bottle or glass which someone else has left on a neck and it smashes on the ground.

The dad starts having a read go at him- tells him he has ruined a nice day out and they will have to walk now. They all trudge off.

DC and I felt sorry for this lad, it was hardly his fault. What luck going out for the day with a dad like that Sad

Well yanbu to think it's over the top, but really you only saw a snippet of their day.

It's possible that the boy had been misbehaving all day and that was the straw that broke the camels back.

Well he can't have been as it was only the morning

Am I missing something? He was messing around, broke something and his dad told him off. Didn't that used to be called parenting?

pessimisticstateofperception · 17/04/2019 19:00

Kid pisses about and breaks something.

Parent snaps.

Hardly out of the ordinary.

brummiebadass · 17/04/2019 19:02

A lot of things could have happened between getting up that morning and then! I've been "that" parent. My kids are amazing also can be off the chart silliness-wise, even before 9am.

Witchtower · 17/04/2019 19:03

😂😂 i think @Lolatall is correct. May have been the morning but they may have berm awake for the last 4 hours. They prob did nothing wrong but parent had just had enough after a really shitty morning. Not saying the parent was right, just had a moment.

CherryPlum · 17/04/2019 19:03

I think it's pretty shitty to have a go at a child for knocking something over by accident. And telling him he's ruined ths day is really mean.

Ewitsahooman · 17/04/2019 19:07

Who is to say that they hadn't already been warned "any more jumping around or silliness and we'll be going home!"?

VladmirsPoutine · 17/04/2019 19:09

To be fair; YANBU to feel the emotions you do over that moment. It might seem an overreaction to you, but on the contrary, it could be just episode number 23,457 that the boy's been told to behave and not mess about in public.

On a separate note I quite like the concept of a boat taxi.

Boom45 · 17/04/2019 19:10

I'm with you OP. If some idiot has left a glass bottle lying around I'd say its their fault, not the boy. And boys larking about a bit, outside, while waiting for a water taxi doesn't sound like bad behaviour to me.
