If you are successful, what clothes and soft skills helped your face fit?

Pondering this afternoon, as I have lived very scruffily as a postgrad student for the last year. It's some years since I paid any attention to clothes and looking professionally polished on a regular basis at all.

I do think that you can have a great education and skillset and be let down at interview by your face not quite fitting, especially if you're feeling nervous because you want the job SO MUCH - I'm afraid of coming across as a bumbling frump. I feel this is especially the case in London in certain media/ marketing fields, which I will be applying to.

Thought it'd be interesting to hear what might have helped successful women in terms of looking the part. For example, I'm thinking of booking a session with a personal shopper, but unsure.

And on a different note, what are the most useful soft skills you have, not directly related to education or training?

Of course it shouldn't be about shouldn't matter at all what you wear, but unfortunately I think it does all to often have a subtle impact.
