to ask a silly question?

....As microwaves are made of metal inside why can't you put metal things inside them when you are cooking something?

and if you have a silly question please ask it to make me feel less of a fool! Grin

I have no idea! Maybe because the metal is treated in a different way on the inside of the microwave and when you put metal in a microwave it reacts with it.

I've always wondered why you can't freeze eggs (the chicken type)!

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 20:36

I can answer that! The water in the liquid expands and can crack the shell and bacteria get in.

GrandmaSharksDentures · 16/04/2019 20:37

The metal in a microwave is engineered to be at an exact angle so that the microwaves will not bounce off it & cause damage

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 20:40

We have a combined microwave and convection over which can have metal in it when it's a convection oven so I chanced it tonight and put metal in when microwaving bacon, nothing exploded or sparked which made me wonder about conventional microwave ovens.

Thank you @brizzlemint!

Claw01 · 16/04/2019 21:07

You can freeze eggs, if you remove the shell.

How does placing a wooden spoon across a boiling pot stop it from boiling over? Or does it?

JobbyBum · 16/04/2019 21:10

@Claw01 The wooden spoon thing is a fallacy. It doesn’t stop it boiling over.

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 21:17

The wooden spoon pops the bubbles and stops it boiling over I read it on the Internet so it must be true

The only thing that stops it boiling over is you watching it, this is why a watched kettle never boils.

Thanks! It did seem a bit pointless, when you can turn the heat down Grin

Claw01 · 16/04/2019 21:20

Oh as a kid, if I felt I wanted to sneeze and couldn’t, my mum used to tell me to look up at the light and it worked!

Why?

MsChicken · 16/04/2019 21:28

Photic sneeze reflex - lots of people get it when looking at the sun as well.

CheekyFuckersDontGetPastMe · 16/04/2019 21:31

I’ve never seen a baby pigeon, why is that?

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 21:31

One of my ds's always sneezes when coming out of a dark building like a bat cave into the sunlight but my other two dcs don't.

Why can you sometimes hear your heartbeat / pulse even when you have not been exerting yourself ? ( or is it just me Shock )

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 21:32

They leave the nest when nearly fully grown, we see them in our garden because they nest here and fledge when they are still being fed.

OP posts:
Claw01 · 16/04/2019 21:33

cheeky they don’t leave the nest until they are about a year old.....I think!

Lemoneeza · 16/04/2019 21:35

I saw some baby pigeons recently they were very cute.

MsChicken · 16/04/2019 21:36

Baby pigeons are called squabs. This I know. And that the photic sneezing at bright lights and the sun is a genetic thing.

Claw01 · 16/04/2019 21:36

mschicken I always wondered if it was the light or the looking up that did it. Next time I feel a sneeze and cannot, im going to try looking up, in the dark Grin

MsChicken · 16/04/2019 21:41

It's to do with nerves at the back of the eyes so you never know, I think other stimuli work too. Only 25% of people have it, the other 75% think we're mad. Apparently only some people's wee smells of asparagus after they've eaten it too. Random.

Claw01 · 16/04/2019 21:50

Ok, interesting it doesn’t work for everyone. I’ve been passing on my mum’s advice and looking like a right idiot Grin

I sneeze whenever I eat mints too.

My wee doesn’t smell like asparagus after eating or maybe I can’t smell it, due to the dodgy sneezing!

MillicentMartha · 16/04/2019 21:57

I watched 2 pigeons grow from eggs in a nest outside my bedroom this spring. They just grow really quickly. Within a month from egg to virtually adult looking birds. They were fluffy, downy things for around a week or so.

MsChicken · 16/04/2019 22:00

Yes, mints is another classic trigger. You have a condition! Congratulations! I envy your non-asparagus smelling wee.

CheekyFuckersDontGetPastMe · 16/04/2019 22:04

Thank you!

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 22:14

Hmm, my ds with the photic sneeze is the only one in the extended family up to his great grandparents how does it, I'd better not tell his father! WinkGrin
