AIBU to ask whether gynae referrals are always for cancer screening?

I was referred about 2 weeks ago to gynae due to various issues.
Got the appointment letter today and it includes a leaflet called 'Cancer pathway information for patients being investigated for possible gynaecological cancer'.
I thought I was being referred for investigation for things like endometriosis or similar. Is it standard for gynae referrals to include cancer screening?

Also, will they only investigate for cancer or will they investigate for other non cancerous causes?

If they investigate it will most likely be for everything. I'm pretty sure it's routine to screen for cancer. I get screened for cancer when I go but it's just that my cervix is high and I'm such a bloody awkward angle in there that no one has yet succeeded in getting a normal smear from me.

They will look for anything which could be causing your symptoms, from a cyst, fibroids, infection, prolapse endometriosis...... and they will look for cancer if it seems possible. Majority of times it's not.
Mostly what you imagine is worse than what they tell you, and even if it's bad news it's good to start dealing with it before it gets worse. Treatment for cancer is much more successful than it used to be. Try not to panic, hope it goes ok.

I'm 99% sure it's not cancer, so I'm not worried, I'm just more concerned that they actually test for the more likely causes.

Thanks for the info!

I had the same sort of letter but I wasn't being referred for suspected cancer, I'd already been told it was hormonal. I think it's a standard letter. R

They'll investigate everything.

I got referred on a 2 week cancer pathway (not gynae) and GP explained that 99% of people it's not cancer but they can't take the risk of that 1% waiting months to see someone.

Good luck.

I imagine it's a standard letter. I got similarly freaked out when I was referred for a dermatology screening - lots of mention of cancer but it was just a standard letter.

Well there's the letter and then the leaflet. The leaflet tells me to keep the next 6 weeks free for medical appointments.
I genuinely don't think it's cancer (I feel this is not the rock I'll perish on), I feel it's hormonal or something. I'm just afraid that they will rule out cancer and leave me with all sorts of shit still ongoing and not do anything about it.
I've heard that gynae is probably the one specialism where people are left with ongoing issues and nothing done about it.
