About not wanting to go in fully paid holiday to v expensive destination with ILS during PGCSE

So boyfriends have offered to take all the family to v v expensive holiday destination fully paid holiday. Very generous of them. THIS however falls during whennim on my PGCSE course so I’ve mentioned I don’t think me and dd can go. Dd isn’t boyfriends child. Boyfriend thinks I’m ungrateful . And that if I want to go “I’ll make it happen”. I’m royally pissed off . I’m a single mum that works full time with children with mental health problems and juggling court battles with my ex . While also prepping for my PGCSE that’s been long dreamed of. He said if I have lots of essays I can just stay in the room and do them in the holiday place while he takes dd to the parks. I don’t know whether I’m being a rat or he’s being an arse but I’m on my period and have a sprained knee so I’m cross anyway.

Is it is the school holidays or term time?

PurpleDaisies · 15/04/2019 20:03

What’s a pgcse?

If it’s basically the same as a pgce, definitely don’t go. It’s a crazy year.

Chillyegg · 15/04/2019 20:04

Sorry it’s my PGCE

It’s in holiday time I’ve double checked

Some universities expect you to be in during holidays for lectures

stopitandtidyupp · 15/04/2019 20:05

What date is the holiday? When does your course start and end? How many years?

I went away at the beginning of my PGCE for a wedding. Everyone was ok with it. I felt a bit stressed about it. 15 years on, it all turned out ok.

SweepTheHalls · 15/04/2019 20:06

Which holiday?

AnxiousAspie · 15/04/2019 20:06

If it is term time you can't go; if it is during the school holidays you would still struggle as you are in university during that time.

Cantchooseaname · 15/04/2019 20:06

If it is term time and you are on placement, there is no way you can go. You will be teaching.
If it is during a holiday- maybe. Pgce is crazy tough, but depending on how far you are going/ time difference you could make it work if you wanted to.
I wouldn’t want to. I needed time in hols to do prep, planning, essays and sort house!!

stopitandtidyupp · 15/04/2019 20:07

If its in school holidays I would go. You may enjoy the break. School placements are also fairly short on the PGCE.

What subject are you doing?

Chillyegg · 15/04/2019 20:08

It’s Easter 2020 I start in September this year. The uni have said they’d have to get back to me about schedules of lectures . It’s one year and school based

Boyfriend thinks I’m ungrateful . And that if I want to go “I’ll make it happen”. I’m royally pissed off He means you've sown him up and he wants you to stop! Why else would a grown man not understand why someone felt they had to turn down a holiday they actually would like to go on?

Tell him to make it happen at some other time.... or go alone!

99calmbeforethestorm · 15/04/2019 20:08

When is the holiday? On my PGCE essays were always due in at the end of holidays.

Chillyegg · 15/04/2019 20:09

I’m doing a Primary SCITT. It coincides with the Easter break at both uni and the school but I’m worried I’ll have loads to do.

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 15/04/2019 20:10

Scitt is particularly tough for getting essays done. Term time you’ll be mega busy at school. Essays only really happen in holidays.

Dermymc · 15/04/2019 20:11

I'd go and enjoy the break tbh.

PoliticalBiscuit · 15/04/2019 20:11

Your boyfriend sounds like a right arsehole so not sure I'd go anywhere with him even if it's Bali.

And that's before I know whether its possible to do it with your course.

Yes-this is the key issue here

helterskelter3 · 15/04/2019 20:13

I went on holiday during my PGCE year, took my laptop abc it was much easier as there are fewer distractions than in the house. Go for it!

stopitandtidyupp · 15/04/2019 20:14

After Easter in some aspects its the easiest term.
Bearing in mind this term we are back 5 weeks ( two of which are four days) then theres a week off then only 7 until summer.

Yes you may have essays but your boyfriend entertaining dd will be great too.

Chillyegg · 15/04/2019 20:15

Well this is it I’m so so so cross. Why does a pissing holiday that I literally can do any time after my PGCE take president over my studies that I’ve worked hard for and toiled in low paid school based jobs to get enough experience.

Any reason why it can't be in the summer?

CrunchyEggshells · 15/04/2019 20:18

Firstly your boyfriend is being unreasonable to put pressure on you in this way. He should be supporting your course and your decision.

If a PGCSE the same as a PGCE, is yours School Direct or more university-based? If it’s the former it might feel busier as you are likely to have a fuller teaching timetable and more “responsibilities” from early on.

Are you already teaching and now getting the qualification, or totally new to it? You’re likely to find it more full-on if it’s all new.

Would the holiday fall during term-time or school holidays? If it’s term time you obviously can’t go anyway. If it’s in holidays, which would it be? (If it’s close to exams you might be asked to do holiday intervention. It wouldn’t be compulsory, but you might want to if you have students taking exams and feel invested/responsible.) Or, you might want to take up the chance to accompany school trips during holidays.

Do you know anyone who is already on the same course/at the same placement schools to get advice from about what it’s like in practice?

Although my School-Direct PGCE was full-on, I’d already been teaching for a while so it’s not directly comparable. But I was glad to go away on holiday during some of the school holidays (I did have to do some work but jigged it so it was just the essays/paperwork, having kept vaguely on top of marking during the term). I also had to be on email as I was also in charge of a subject, but It was still good to have a break.

wonderpants · 15/04/2019 20:18

I did my PGCE a couple of years ago and it is doable. In some ways- an enforced break is nice because it will force you to relax. And you could take your laptop and work a couple of hours a day.

It will be hard to go for a few years as a teacher, but you can do it if you are mega-organised!
