Consultant wants to see me in the morning

I had my appendix out last week. They said it was quite infected and blocked. They said they would be sending it off for tests. Just got a call this evening to say the Consultant wants to see me tomorrow morning to discuss the results.

I am besides myself with worry. Would they want to see me so quickly if it wasn’t bad news. Or are they just being super efficient? Does everybody get a follow up appointment after surgery? Anyone got any experience of this that can help me to calm down?

Could be anything. No point trying to guess. Good luck OP.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 15/04/2019 22:59

Good luck op hope it goes well tomorrow

LittlePaintBox · 15/04/2019 23:00

Try not to worry, as others have said, it's most likely a timing thing.

My guess is a specific antibiotic now that they've done lab tests to find out what sort of infection it is.

ShawshanksRedemption · 15/04/2019 23:04

If you're worrying about it being cancer @itsgoodtobehome, as someone whose family member has just had theirs removed, they were told it was extremely rare. So please don't worry.

Good luck lovely. Hope it is nothing to serious.

I once had a missed call and a message from a consultant after some tests to call back as soon as possible. It was Friday evening when I got the message so I worried all weekend. I rang first thing Monday and it was something so minor.

bathorshower · 15/04/2019 23:10

To try to reassure you, a friend who was in hospital for something different had tests and was discharged. The tests showed he was far more ill than anyone had realised, and he was phoned and asked to return to hospital immediately. If there was something really serious going on, you wouldn't be waiting until tomorrow. Hope that helps you sleep a little better.

itsgoodtobehome · 16/04/2019 07:30

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I didn’t sleep very well, but at least it’s morning now and it won’t be long until the appointment.

I do now remember that when the Consultant came to see me on the ward the next morning, he did say something about going on holiday soon. So maybe he is trying to get things wrapped up before he finishes.

DH is coming with me. They didn’t say on the phone call to bring someone, so maybe if it was really bad they would have said that??

Anyway, I can’t second guess it. 3 more hours and I will know for sure.

Good luck OP. I also think it'll be about fitting you in quickly due to his holiday.

Littlefroggy18 · 16/04/2019 07:38

Good luck OP!

Pandasarecute · 16/04/2019 07:39

I hope things go well for you today OPThanks

stucknoue · 16/04/2019 07:47

Obviously there's something but the speedy appointment could be because they had a slot or were on annual leave after today.

SnowsInWater · 16/04/2019 07:49

Hope all is ok x

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/04/2019 07:49

Glad your DH is going too. Safe journey, and good luck.

Hollywhiskey · 16/04/2019 07:54

If you're worried about it being cancer, my SIL just had that. It's incredibly rare but if you have it it's also extremely treatable- basically removal of the appendix does for it, no chemo for example. She obviously had to have more tests to ensure it hadn't spread but that would be insanely unlikely and only slightly less unlikely in an older person or a man. So the 'worst case' isn't anything like as bad as you are probably thinking. Good luck

To all of you saying ‘it’s to do with easter’......do any of you actually work in hospitals? That IS NOT how they work. Consultants have almost no control over their lists.
Do you think OP really needs to hear that right now?!!! If you felt the need to say it then you should have waited until after she'd seen him not tried to add to her worry.
My £ is on cancellation or antibiotics or otherwise no slot for ages and it can't wait THAT long (i.e. antibiotics etc)

BlueSuffragette · 16/04/2019 08:12

Good luck OP. Flowers

All hospitals are not the same.

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 08:15

Consultants might not have control over their lists but the admin staff do and if they know that a person needs seeing before the consultant goes away on a two week cruise to the Bahamas then they can and do fit in people at the last minute. My father's NHS consultant phoned me himself to ask us to come in the next morning (as my father wasn't compos mentis).

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 08:16

^ and OP, that was just to get him a different prescription that a colleague had recommended.

Russell19 · 16/04/2019 08:20

Hope it goes ok xx

SnuggyBuggy · 16/04/2019 08:25

As someone who has worked in NHS admin Easter weekend can be a fucking nightmare to work around and it really is often a case of fitting in patients anywhere you can to avoid a backlog that's only going to be made worse with the May bank holidays. Ad hoc clinics are often used and by the time they are authorised by management and appointments ready to be booked it can be a last minute job where you have to phone all the patients and confirm it.

Hope it goes ok OP

MsJaneAusten · 16/04/2019 08:27

When I had mine out, it turned out that the appendix was fine so I needed follow ups to work out what was wrong. There are lots of reasons he might need to see you. I hope it goes well Flowers
