Easter Roast

Calm33 · 15/04/2019 13:18

Over the past couple of years I have been cooking Roast lamb for the Easter Sunday which everyone seems to enjoy and was wondering if it is true that New Zealand lamb is all halal?

Its just that my guests would object to this way of killing and I know they have stopped going into certain restaurants i.e. Nando's.
I also feel not inclined to eat Halal meat and find it seems quite hidden now in many shops and restaurants and many people don't realise they are eating it.

OP posts:

I always though that Nando’s is halal. I’m certain they have a sign in the window saying so

Nanasueathome · 15/04/2019 13:19

Sorry, didn’t read your post correctly.
Is it halal that you object to?

Sirzy · 15/04/2019 13:21

You do realise that halal meat on general sale still meets the same standards it’s simply a prayer said before the slaughter.

AppleKatie · 15/04/2019 13:22

I’d be very surprised if ALL New Zealand lamb is Halal tbh. But I don’t think it’s clearly marked either way.

CupOhTea · 15/04/2019 13:22

You could do a veggie dish instead? Then you’d know for sure!

HBStowe · 15/04/2019 13:24

Always baffled that people are willing to eat animals which have been brutally slaughtered in one way, but not animals that have been brutally slaughtered in another way...

OP I have some lovely springy veggie recipes for Easter Sunday if you’re worried!

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 15/04/2019 13:24

Given that the halal places bear me make a point of advertising non stunned meat I imagine the majority is slaughtered in exactly the same way as all other meat except a prayer is read out.

Confusedbeetle · 15/04/2019 13:26

I think Halal meat can be stunned before slaughter but not necessarily. Kosher is not stunned. Why would NZ meat be halal?
Any British lamb will have been indoor-reared and no grass. The outdoor are only just being born. The best time to buy lamb is late summer.
Why not cook a different meat, and eat seasonally.
There are a lot of abbatoir welfare issues that might disturb us if we knew more, eg chickens in electrocuted baths, stressed animals etc. If we eat meat we have a responsibility to ensure the animals have a good life, and a swift painless death

Confusedbeetle · 15/04/2019 13:28

Formerly, have I misread you, is the halal meat advertised as non stunned? The majority of animals are stunned before death to reduce stress and pain

GrouchyKiwi · 15/04/2019 13:38

Here's some helpful information from the New Zealand Meat Industry Association: www.mia.co.nz/what-we-do/trade/halal/

Littleheart5 · 15/04/2019 13:52

Halal meat isn’t stunned. The animals throat is slit and it’s left to bleed to death. It’s more cruel. (Not that it isn’t all cruel). I avoid restaurants that use halal meat for that reason

Treaclesweet · 15/04/2019 14:00

Amused by non veggies dressing their racism up as concern for animals. Especially if you're not even going to bother with free range etc I don't think the method of slaughter, which is either way over very quickly, makes a jot of difference.

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/04/2019 14:02

I share your concerns op , I do not wish to eat halal meat either.

SilverySurfer · 15/04/2019 14:05

I only ever eat free range meat and will never buy halal.

Nice try lol. Not a chance in my case.

Nearlythere1 · 15/04/2019 14:08

@Treaclesweet what a perverse and utterly typical way to try to discredit others. It's not racism to object to eating halal meat because of the way it is slaughtered. Do you find it racist that jews and muslims won't eat meat not killed by halal or kosher standards? No, it comes down to a moral conviction, whether that's inspired by religion or otherwise.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 15/04/2019 14:08

Not all of it is though. My point above was that if some (not all) of the halal butcher's near me (in a very Muslim area) make a point of advertising that their meat is non stunned then it stands to reason that not all of it is stunned. In fact I'm sure I've read somewhere That the majority is not stunned and is no different to non halal meat, can't remember where I read it.

Littleheart5 · 15/04/2019 14:09

Agreed nearlythere!!

Weebitawks · 15/04/2019 14:17

Well you could by local lamb that's generally not halal and less air miles etc

Drogosnextwife · 15/04/2019 14:23

@Treaclesweet

Don't be ridiculous, it's not racism fgs. Some people just don't agree with that method of slaughter. It's a religious things, not so much a race thing really.

MenuPlant · 15/04/2019 14:30

why would all new zealand lamb be halal?

i agree that while slaughterhouses and animal killing are always violent and unpleasant, i thought that stunning them was less awful?

although have heard so many stories over the years about atrocious behaviour in large british slaughterhouses so who knows really

best way is prob go local smaller suppliers etc

Weedsnseeds1 · 15/04/2019 14:32

Yes, it's pretty much all Halal. The lamb is all pre-stunned. Other than the slaughter man being a Muslim and the ritual prayer, it's identical to non-halal method.
A lot of UK lamb is Halal too, but only the required number of carcasses for the orders are stamped as Halal. It's pre-stunned too.
There is a small amount of non stunned halal slaughter in the UK, but it won't end up on your plate unless you shop in halal butcher's shops.
Slaughter men in UK and NZ have to be licensed.

MenuPlant · 15/04/2019 14:32

www.rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaign/slaughter

RSPCA stance.

Shocked to find they are so racist Grin

MenuPlant · 15/04/2019 14:33

weeds rspca link says 35% of halal meat in UK is not stunned which is quite a lot

if it's done the same I don't care about a prayer or 2

have accidentally bought kosher coca cola in the supermaket before now!

ghostyslovesheets · 15/04/2019 14:35

Most Halal meat is stunned btw

100% of Kosher meat is not

never understood why halal is the bad guy but kosher never gets a mention - odd that

anyway - animals die when you eat them so maybe if it really bothers you - don't!

MenuPlant · 15/04/2019 14:37

well yes 65% is most but 35% is still an awful lot of lamb. certainly enough that it's not just being sold in smaller halal shops
