To suddenly and very reluctantly be vegetarian?

I love meat. I've always been one of those people who never even considered not eating meat. I made jokes about bacon. Then I suddenly went off it completely. No idea why. I haven't eaten meat for three weeks now, I can't even think about eating meat. I gave away my favourite crisps because they have dried chicken in them so I can't even say it's a flesh thing.

I bought Quorn today. I've had to admit I'm probably a vegetarian now. I've started feeling a bit funny about eggs and milk. What the hell is happening to me?! I genuinely have no desire to be veggie, nowt wrong with it but it's not me.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is it likely to stop? I don't know myself anymore Confused

Babybel is vegetarian :)

PregnantSea · 17/04/2019 13:04

Depending on your perspective the whole concept of meat can be very delicious or very disgusting. If you're changing your opinion about things then just go with it, I'd say

Smoked tofu is the food of the gods. You can just fry it up (Tofoo brand) and eat it with anything. So good. Other tofus I find are much better if first frozen, thawed and pressed then fried/baked.

I started getting 10 a day thanks to James Wong's book, and have cut out at least half of the meat I used to eat. I can now happily go veggie for lunch most days, and occasionally vegan since I don't have to cater for my carnivore menfolk. Meat does seem less appealing with time away from it!

Carnivorenomore · 17/04/2019 14:56

I'm putting smoked tofu on my shopping list now, in for a penny and all that Grin

Naked brand smoked Tofu is delish, even German DH who was basically raised on various pig parts loves it
You will wouldn’t have to prise proper cheese and Mayo from my cold dead fingers though

LaurieFairyCake · 17/04/2019 23:10

This vegan mayo is BRILLIANT

I can't tell the difference between it and the egg version in a blind taste

I was so glad I could finally have a proper replacement

Well I've done my meal plan for the week and shopping list. I've tried to plan a meat based meal each day for the family but adapted mine to be veggie. Lots of roasted squash, stuffed mushrooms and quorn mince chilli!

I was a little tempted by the smell of the roast chicken last night but then was a little repulsed by DH eating the chicken off the bone. Although I took the skin off DDs chicken and (shock horror) accidentally licked my fingers after!!! Failed already!

Historydweeb · 18/04/2019 10:09

Vegetarian since I was 12 and I just can't stomach meat and increasingly any animal products like eggs and milk. I do wonder if it's a natural reaction by the body to prevent the ingestion of all the extra hormones and antibiotics that the animals are pumped full of. Farming today is certainly not what it was 30/40 years ago. And you don't even want to know how animal feed is made Confused

Carnivorenomore · 18/04/2019 22:59

Historydweeb that's a really good point, I've thought a lot about antibiotic resistance during my science course and have definitely been concerned at the prospect of losing EU regulations in farming and potentially importing US meat.

I'm so glad I started this thread, it's really made me explore what's going on in my head!

I also am a fan of smoked firm tofu - the dragon fly one if my favourite! & husband thinks the best mayo is veganaise (never been a fan of mayo myself.) :D

cricketmum84 · 20/04/2019 16:21

Couldn't find any tofu at Lidl! However I did get some GOSH falafel and sweet potato pakoras that I'm really looking forward to! Also Lidl own brand cauli cheese burgers that I'll throw in the oven when we bbq later.

I thought I would struggle finding vegetarian cheese but am happy to report that Lidl's budget big blocks of mature cheddar are vegetarian!

TheDarkPassenger · 20/04/2019 19:01

I was the opposite!! Veggie for ages, couldn’t imagine putting meat anywhere near me and made me feel sick the thought of eating it. Then I got ill and hospitalised and when I came out I CRAVVVVVEEED meat! Became a meat eater almost straight away although we don’t eat loads of it tbh, but I do feel it was my body telling me it needed it to get better, tour body is telling you something so follow it.

(Although my body tells me I need cake although I have coeliacs so not sure how much I trust my body anymore 😂)

cricketmum84 · 27/04/2019 21:04

Everyone who told me to try tofu you were all right!!

I bought some from the Chinese supermarket near work on Friday but have left it in the work fridge :(

Ordered a Chinese tonight and I've gone for rice noodles with broccoli and mushrooms and a portion of salt and pepper tofu. It's absolutely gorgeous. This is a game changer for me now!!

Carnivorenomore · 28/04/2019 09:16

cricketmum84 you're still going strong then! Well done Smile

That Chinese takeaway sounds amazing! I will have to check out my local to see what veggie dishes they do, I haven't had a takeaway in more than a month since this meat aversion started.

I did try tofu, I bought the marinated Cauldron chunks and cooked in a spicy peanut butter sauce with noodles but I wasn't wildly impressed with the texture. I must have a search for some more recipes and try again

I am indeed! I'm finding it quite easy to be honest. I'm meal planning a week at a time for meat dishes for the family but then a veggie alternative for me. I've made falafels, roasted squash, quorn chilli and curries.

There weren't many exciting veggie options on the takeaway list to be honest. I would definitely recommend the salt and pepper tofu though. They do a spicy rice noodle dish with all different meats so I just phoned them and asked if they could make me a veggie alternative and they asked what veg I liked!

Eating out is proving a bit of a pain. DH wanted to go to a carvery place Friday and my choices were microwaved Mac and cheese or a toastie!

How are you getting on?

notacooldad · 28/04/2019 16:59

cricketmum
Can I recommend a book I bought this week. Its called 'Vegan one pound meals' I bought it in Tesco last week and have tried the Laksa, potato and nigella seed curry. Broccoli and bean charred pepper orzo , sticky tofu, and tofu and broccoli stir fry.
I'm making the sweet carrot dal for lunch for tomorrow.

RadioMeinRadio · 28/04/2019 17:06

CarnivoreNoMore. The way the tofu is prepared in this recipe is my favourite way to have it, besides scrambled. It's so crispy. www.budgetbytes.com/pan-fried-sesame-tofu-with-broccoli/

I found the actual recipe a little too salty for my liking but I often prepare my tofu this way now(sans the sauce).

Zoobedoo · 28/04/2019 17:06

It's funny all these people disgusted by meat. I had the opposite issue. I was strict veggie for over a decade but missed meat terribly!
