To suddenly and very reluctantly be vegetarian?

I love meat. I've always been one of those people who never even considered not eating meat. I made jokes about bacon. Then I suddenly went off it completely. No idea why. I haven't eaten meat for three weeks now, I can't even think about eating meat. I gave away my favourite crisps because they have dried chicken in them so I can't even say it's a flesh thing.

I bought Quorn today. I've had to admit I'm probably a vegetarian now. I've started feeling a bit funny about eggs and milk. What the hell is happening to me?! I genuinely have no desire to be veggie, nowt wrong with it but it's not me.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is it likely to stop? I don't know myself anymore Confused

Are you very sure you’re not pregnant? I went right off meat with my first. That said, I go through periods of eating it and not eating it, and my friends daughter has never liked it in spite of having two enthusiastic carnivores as parents. Some people just don’t like it. You don’t need to give yourself a label. The only time you need to let people know is if you’re going for dinner at someone else’s house or if someone in your house does the cooking.

I am also becoming more and more reluctant to eat meat. DS is also on the verge. I don’t know if I will give it up completely but eating less of it has to be a good thing.

Carnivorenomore · 14/04/2019 22:23

This may be a drip feed but I honestly hadn't thought about it being connected!! I'm studying human anatomy, I've been on placement in a hospital and things have been a bit gory. Fuck, I bet it's that! Subconscious connection maybe. I feel so stupid Blush

Maybe you got bitten by that 'tick' that makes people go vegan?

Carnivorenomore · 14/04/2019 22:27

furryslipperboots I totally see your point, don't expect anyone to be bothered, it was just a bit of a surprise, I'm in my forties and thought I was pretty set in my ways Grin

My standard recommendations for new or part time vegetarians are:

Vegetarian recipe and meal planning site including shopping lists

Book for part time and migrating vegetarians

Searchable site based on ingredients or other criteria

The best vegetarian writers are actual vegetarians doing practical every day cookery. Avoid celeb chefs/TV cooks who do a "vegetarian" of "vegan" book to cash in on the fashions. eg Rose Elliot or Anna Jones of the new generation

Of the non vegetarian writers the best on veggie food are those who are good all round and regional food writers - Nigel Slater, Diana Henry, Madhur Jaffrey, Claudia Roden et al.

My dsis went off meat in the late 70s and didn't eat it again till the 90s. Just couldn't face it, but one Sunday started picking at some roast chicken and tat was it. Just eat what your body tells you.
I'm fascinated by the crisps with dried chicken in though.

Three years ago, on a rare date night with my DH I was eating the most amazing lamb tagine in a Turkish restaurant. About half way through, I couldn't stop thinking about baby lambs and their lovely big eyes. I felt sick and couldn't finish my dinner. I have only eaten red meat twice since then, in the first year, to be polite. I just couldn't eat it now. For me it's partly environmental, partly seeing too many animals at farm parks and partly for health reasons. I didn't mean to do it, but I can't go back. I eat chicken and fish as thats easy protein for all the family. But I often choose a veggie option in restaurants. It's also been weirdly easy giving up red meat. Almost like I don't have a choice and that's just how it is.

I went dairy free after about 20 years of being veggie and have very quickly gone off eggs too- the thought of any animal product is suddenly very unappealing. It's amazing how quickly your tastes can change.

C8H10N4O2 · 14/04/2019 22:33

That is I recommend Elliot and Jones, not that they are celebs "doing" vegetarian.

One day I will learn to really proof read!

C8H10N4O2 thank you so much!!

I have been looking at going vegetarian or vegan for a while but I have really serious IBS so most fruit is out, can't eat nuts or pulses or anything baked bean type and if I eat quorn I may as well book a holiday on my toilet.

If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears! I currently eat veg with some fish, or jacket and tuna. I have tried vegan cheese and butter etc but it makes me very poorly.

Underthegreenwood · 14/04/2019 22:39

I'm the same, quite quickly went off meat and now 90% veggie. This book has been a revelation for truly delicious vegetarian food that's made me excited about cooking again www.waterstones.com/book/the-green-roasting-tin/rukmini-iyer/9781910931899

KatnissMellark · 14/04/2019 22:41

Thanks @C8H10N4O2, just bought the book you linked! Looks fab. We eat far too much meat and could do with losing some weight too, hopefully that book will give us some good ideas.

Carnivorenomore · 14/04/2019 22:44

I'm definitely feeling less weird about it now, thanks everyone! I'm going to see it as a positive thing and embrace it Grin

@KatnissMellark. hope you find it useful!

Its the one which I've found helpful for most meat eaters wanting to reduce meat or having a vegetarian family member.

A lot of the recipes should look pretty familiar to family cooking with meat which I think is helpful when starting out.

OhioOhioOhio · 14/04/2019 22:48

That is so bizarre.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 14/04/2019 22:53

We’ve gone veggie for Lent and although we’ll go back to meat, I think for me it’ll be fish, chicken and the odd steak. The thought of lamb/pork/mince/sausage turns my stomach now Confused

Redorangeyellowgreen · 14/04/2019 22:55

This is pretty much exactly what happened to me! I think it is no coincidence that it happened not long after having my first child. I don't particularly want to be vegetarian and on paper I think there's nothing wrong with eating meat but I now just can't bring myself to actually do it.

User12879923378 · 14/04/2019 22:56

This happened to me about six years ago and ended as quickly as it began after two months.

SirGawain · 14/04/2019 22:59

You can have the diet you want to. I'm not vegetarian but I respect the choice of those that are.
However I have two facebook friends who post slightly aggressive vegetarian propaganda which I do find annoying.

HoraceCope · 14/04/2019 23:16

i love vegetarian meals, so much more interesting.
