To suddenly and very reluctantly be vegetarian?

I love meat. I've always been one of those people who never even considered not eating meat. I made jokes about bacon. Then I suddenly went off it completely. No idea why. I haven't eaten meat for three weeks now, I can't even think about eating meat. I gave away my favourite crisps because they have dried chicken in them so I can't even say it's a flesh thing.

I bought Quorn today. I've had to admit I'm probably a vegetarian now. I've started feeling a bit funny about eggs and milk. What the hell is happening to me?! I genuinely have no desire to be veggie, nowt wrong with it but it's not me.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is it likely to stop? I don't know myself anymore Confused

My tofu-at-home revelation came when I got an Actifry. Properly crispy tofu is lush, I could never get it right till I tried it in that. And the Taifun smoked tofu is delish.

Fave midweek dinner is a vegetable burger with breadcrumbs (ASDA), oven chips, bit of salad and a massive dollop of either Vegenaise or the Hellman's vegan mayo. Bloody lovely. I could eat that white gooey vegan crack with a SPOON.

Carnivorenomore · 17/04/2019 11:34

Vegan mayo may be a game changer, I had no idea it was a thing!! I'm not sure I can live without cheese though, milk is no problem as alternatives are so good now

Cheese is my downfall too. I love oat milk and hazelnut milk but I just cannot give up the cheese!

I did try a vegan cheese (made out of coconut milk) at a cheese festival a couple of years ago but it just wasn't cheese.

SpriggyTheHedgehog · 17/04/2019 11:45

I don't know what kind of vegan cheese Asda use on their new vegan flatbread pizza but I was pleasantly surprised by it.

MoMandaS · 17/04/2019 11:49

Thank you, dad - just ordered it!

I recommend Meera Sodha's Fresh India book - the dishes are light and very tasty.

Same thing happens to me after being hospitalised in January due to liver function issues that came out of the blue. Went vegan overnight and don't miss meat, dairy, eggs at all. But that might be because suddenly all my ailments went away, I lost 24lbs and have never felt better

IncrediblySadToo · 17/04/2019 11:52

The Hellman’s Vegan Mayo is FAB!!

I’ve been veggie 30 years this year. I used to ‘weave my own lentils’😋. I can now no longer be bothered. Too unwell, too exhausted, too over it. I just want someone to do it, fresh, for me. There’s a restaurant in Spain that’s fully vegetarian, I’m contemplating moving there!

notacooldad · 17/04/2019 11:54

With regard to cheese I have c&p fro the Vegetarian Society.

There are a few cheeses that do not use rennet in the cheese-making process, so are always vegetarian. These include paneer, ricotta, and cottage cheese.

Artisan cheeses from specific areas, such as Cornish Yarg, which is wrapped in nettles, Colston Basset Stilton from Nottinghamshire and Lord of the Hundreds, an English ewes’ milk cheese, are always made using vegetarian rennet.
Some British Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) cheeses are always suitable for vegetarians. They include Beacon Fell traditional Lancashire Cheese, Buxton Blue, Dorset Blue, Dovedale Blue, Orkney Scottish Island Cheddar, Single Gloucester, Staffordshire cheese, Swaledale cheese, Swaledale ewes cheese, Traditional Ayrshire Dunlop, Traditional Welsh Caerphilly and Yorkshire Wensleydale.

If you haven't used Paneer before it is my favourite in Indian curries!

cricketmum84 · 17/04/2019 11:54

We've got a vegetarian Indian restaurant very nearby, it came second in Gordon Ramsey's best restaurants programme a few years ago.
I've been desperate to go for ages now and nobody will come with me because there is no meat! Tempted to book a table for one.

Ha! I try to keep things simple. Things are much easier than a couple of decades ago aren't they.
Vegetarians today dont know they are born! Back in the day all we had was saw dust!!! ( cue Monty Python sketch!)

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks · 17/04/2019 11:59

Vegans refer to vegan cheese as 'Gary', because you can't call it cheese.

Some people can eat this vegan cheese and say they like it, but personally I cannot stomach ANY of it. I've tried several and although they're better than they used to be, it's still NOT CHEESE. Cheese is the only thing I miss.

Can you tell I am a bit obsessed with cheese.

I do a 3 bean shepherd's pie that always goes down well with meatetarians and veggies alike.

notacooldad · 17/04/2019 11:59

momanda
I have that book! I get cook books and gin every Christmas and birthday from everyone because I once requested a particular book and once said I liked a raspberry gin!!!

Ellenborough · 17/04/2019 12:02

I’m a bit the same at the moment I’ve no intention of becoming a veggie and even less a vegan, but lately I’m just not enjoying meat like I used to and probably wouldn’t miss it that much if I couldn’t have it for any reason. I’d really miss fish and cheese though.

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks · 17/04/2019 12:04

THE BEST cookbook I ever bought was not vegetarian, but pretty much anything in it can be adapted to veggie or vegan. It's An Indian Housewife's Cookbook, it's about a fiver on Amazon, and it will never steer you wrong, I guarantee it. Although I could never bring myself to try the frozen chip curry.

Carnivorenomore · 17/04/2019 12:20

I'm actually pretty excited at all the recipes I'm going to try, all thanks to this thread!

I wonder if you have inadvertently read or seen something that has subconsciously affected you?

SpriggyTheHedgehog · 17/04/2019 12:26

LoadofUtterBoswellocks. Could I please have your three bean Shepherd pie recipe? I hate regular shepherds pie but that sounds so good.

cricketmum84 · 17/04/2019 12:31

I've just made a lovely quiche for lunch using broccoli and the no porkies vegan chorizo. Not strictly vegetarian as I only had feta cheese to go in it. I'm getting there though!

Carnivorenomore · 17/04/2019 12:40

cricketmum84 I love your enthusiasm 😁

Actually, just had a look on Tesco site, Apertina block cheese is veggie and looks very feta-like!

Apertina is very nice

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks · 17/04/2019 12:48

OH GOD I MISS CHEESE

cricketmum84 · 17/04/2019 12:49

Haha I'm attributing some of that to you @Carnivorenomore!

I've been indecisive for a while now and your thread gave me a kick :)

MoMandaS · 17/04/2019 12:55

Well, at least they're not the worst presents to receive repetitively, notacooldad!
