AIBU to think schools shouldn’t be giving out Easter Eggs?

TulipsTulipsTulips · 12/04/2019 13:22

My DD4 will be showered with chocolate I'm the upcoming week. It’s part of the fun of Easter. But her teachers have already given her, and all the nursery class, a medium sized chocolate egg each and chocolates were being handed around today. AIBU to think giving out chocolates is for parents to monitor and decide, and the school should focus on other healthier Easter activities? Why are schools spending money on unhealthy treats that have no educational purpose?

PennyArcade - I've told you what i think the problem with a chocolate treat is - some children will be left out. I'm all for treats but I don't see why they must be edible. My point (not the OP's) is that a non-edible treat can be inclusive for everyone. I don't really understand why anyone would have a problem with that

Are you fucking serious? There are children who have experienced nothing but abuse in this world, who deserve a break ...even in the form of a creme egg from her teacher. Are you seriously comparing that to your over indulged dc??

People like you make me sick!

You do whats right for your perfect child and let those who know best do for those children whose parents are a complete waste of time!

Do you realise that not every child is cossetted and spoilt? Some children live very unfornate lives. Thank God for Social Services is what I say.

You have a great deal to learn lady... Your child can't eat a treat from school. Just give it back and ask that it is donated to a food bank. What's the problem with that?

TrixieFranklin · 12/04/2019 17:58

For anyone offended by their child receiving an Easter egg please look to donate them to your local children's ward or hospice. We have a very young family member with a life limiting illness who had a visit from some Disney characters this week in hospital who delivered Easter eggs on behalf of a charity who had collected donations of eggs and they were absolutely delighted, as were the parents and families seeing their children genuinely happy and excited - some of them for the first time in a long while.

PennyArcade · 12/04/2019 18:03

I work in year 2 at the moment and I bought all 30 children a little hollow chocolate egg for Easter .... out of my own money

I bet nobody complained in real ife?

Thank you very much for allowing every child to believe they matter. I wish there were more teachers like you Flowers

IntoValhalla · 12/04/2019 18:03

I generally don’t have an issue with it - it’s once a year. Parents can regulate how much of it they allow their kids to eat at once when they get the eggs home can’t they?
But then you throw in my kid, who has multiple, life-threatening food allergies and it’s a nightmare Confused At the moment he’s only a toddler, so it’s only our toddler group we’ve had to contend with this year, handing out chocolate eggs and him being upset when he can’t have one and there’s no safe alternative. Sad

ForalltheSaints · 12/04/2019 18:07

Ten years ago I would have considered the OP to be unreasonable. Though now given the level of childhood obesity, every step against this counts, so would be OK with no such treats.

Bluntness100 · 12/04/2019 18:12

Youd be ok with little kids not getting Easter eggs because of childhood obesity in general? You seriously think that's the answer?

Ok,,,,,

PennyArcade · 12/04/2019 18:14

Whose fault is it that some children are obese? The parents or the school? WTF does that have to do with school giving every pupil an Easter treat anyway??

ValleyoftheHorses · 12/04/2019 18:16

As someone who has to clear up the mess (ie extract the rotten baby teeth) YANBU. Taking a tooth out of a child is horrible, I hate it.
The most common reason for a child to be hospitalised is GA extractions by the way so as much as a threat to health as obesity IMO.

theluckiest · 12/04/2019 18:18

Me too Rainbowstardrops. Happy holidays to you!! Broke up today and I'm spent...

Someone upthread was outraged that this wasn't even educational...Hmm

My Y2 class read Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, researched ethical chocolate & rainforests, designed and made their own chocolate bars, marketed them and got to take them home today or ate them at hometime. I'd say that's pretty educational.

Oh, and the Y2 team paid for all the ingredients out of their own pockets. Because there's no money in state education. Obv not a problem in your school OP but I'd imagine the teachers funding it was also the case in your school.

Ffs they're 4!! God forbid those bastard teachers do something nice for the children in their care. You go ahead and piss on their chips. Or eggs.

Miseryguts.

Honestly, shit like this makes teachers like me not want to bother anymore. But we continue to do so for that one child whose face lights up and will remember this little act of kindness for the rest of their lives.

(Oh, and you can say 'No' if your DC asks to eat it y'know. Wink)

Log it with 101 and report a missing grip.

PostmistressMcColl · 12/04/2019 19:10

Um, PennyArchade, why are you being so rude? There will be kids who have misesble home lives who also have allergies and my view is that it's nice if school treats are inclusive of everyone, kids with food allergies included.

JenMumma · 12/04/2019 19:27

It's ONCE a year.
Let's just let that sink in.
😂

Stuckforthefourthtime · 12/04/2019 20:20

"It's ONCE a year.

But so's Christmas. And Halloween. And birthday parties. And every Friday at the cake sale. And family events. It's always a special occasion around here, and at every one of those there are one or more adults who want to give a 'treat' (often immediately after commenting on ds2s weight) and it drives DH and I a bit crazy, as we'd like to be the ones to do it occasionally.

Alsohuman · 12/04/2019 20:39

Genuine question - what food allergy would preclude chocolate?

Usuallyinthemiddle · 12/04/2019 20:42

Ooh, another joy sucking thread!
Quite right . They should be coming out chores, homework and the occasional eco friendly, bamboo pot of organic houmous. How very dare they spread a little joy.

Seriously? Knob.

KittyWindbag · 12/04/2019 20:43

I come from a huge family and used to get an extreme amount of Easter eggs. Your daughter is lucky. Take some of the surplus eggs to a food bank. If she’s old enough, tell her you’re doing it and why.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 12/04/2019 20:44

Our primary nailed them all to trees instead. Taught the real meaning of Easter.

PennyArcade · 12/04/2019 20:44

Um, PennyArchade, why are you being so rude? There will be kids who have misesble home lives who also have allergies and my view is that it's nice if school treats are inclusive of everyone, kids with food allergies included

Define "rude"..?? You think schools shouldn't give children an end of term treat because it isn't in your Dc's interest. I disagree.... for the reason that if school doesn't provide a treat for SOME children then those children would go without. I don't see why a child within your neighbourhood should be excluded from a festival because your DC has parents who can provide an alternative celebration for him/her, according to their needs.

Most children get an Easter egg for Easter. Some children get 10 Easter Eggs for Easter. Some children get clothing and colouring sets for Easter, because they can't eat chocolate. Some children get absolutely nothing - that's why schools buy every child an Easter egg. TO MAKE SURE NOBODY IS LEFT OUT! GET IT????

rainbowstardrops · 12/04/2019 20:46

Thank you @PennyArcade
The children's faces lit up when I said I'd bought them all a small egg and I absolutely stressed that they couldn't eat it until their 'grown up' had said it was ok.
I can't imagine any of our parents/carers/guardians moaning about a kind gesture but hey, those people are clearly out there! Who knew?!

rainbowstardrops · 12/04/2019 20:52

Happy holidays to you too @theluckiest
We broke up last Friday and I'm still shattered!!! Grin
We've just studied Charlie and the Chocolate factory too!!!
Ours was for our 'inventions' topic though.
Before that, we looked at George's Marvellous Medicine and the children got to explore their own concoctions. All ingredients provided out of the teacher's pocket and TAs bringing bits and bobs in too.
But hey, how dare we buy the children that we spend hours a week with, a little treat a few times a year?! Grin

allthingsred · 12/04/2019 20:54

Not even gonna read the whole thread
YABU.
Ffs get a grip it's a nice thing to do

jelliebelly · 12/04/2019 20:58

FFS it's the easter holidays it's a nice gesture many PTA/teachers do this. I think you'd do better to stop family showering her with chocolate tbh

BigcatLittlecat · 12/04/2019 20:59

Cannot believe some of the replies here! Some of you cannot be looking out on the world and see what is happening!
I teach in an extremely deprived and socially disadvantaged area where if we don't give them any TLC some children don't get any!
So I bought them some eggs and some mini eggs and we had an Easter egg hunt in our classroom!
Year 5 children and absolutely loving it!
This was after a morning where I broke up a fight where two children were using chairs to hit each other! We moved on and had a lovely afternoon because that's what we do!
Oh and I paid for it all out of my own money! I also buy fruit for breakfast! Oh and shoes! And pencils! And art supplies! Because there's no money for niceties in state education!
But that's ok tell me I did the wrong thing, because you won't believe what some of my children will have to deal with over this holiday! So I just make a little niceness for them!

Badgerstmary · 12/04/2019 21:03

I used to teach, & yes, I also gave my class a little treat at Easter. They made a small basket & I put a few tiny eggs in it. Never once did I imagine parents would be horrified by my small act of kindness.

PennyArcade · 12/04/2019 21:07

BigcatLittlecat

Thank you so very much for allowing all children to have fun and feel included Flowers
