Things that are really weird when you think about them

Someone said to me today that balloons are like a plastic bag of someone's breath...

I'd never thought of it like that before and to be honest it made me feel a bit nauseous!

Do you have anymore examples of things that are actually really fucking weird when you think about it?

Will we ever run out of original songs/tunes? How about original plots of books or films?

TallulahBetty · 11/04/2019 09:10

And how come we haven't evolved out of needing to recharge (sleep) for a third of the day? Or refuel (eat) 3 times a day? So inefficient when compared to machines or cars for example!

Moralitym1n1 · 11/04/2019 09:10

Sorry I should say natural is probably not the best word - because being natural doesn't mean something can't be weird. Just more that it's not weird to me - because it makes sense and is completely necessary from a resources & reproduction perspective.

Men don't want to (step dads aside) want to put their resources into offspring who aren't theirs. And women don't want 'their' resources (for them and their offspring) going to another woman.

(Of course some women will share if there are lots of resources eg a wealthy/powerful man).

I'm amused at the brother's Roman kissing theory Grin. Does he realise how recent the Roman Empire was?

ILoveMaxiBondi · 11/04/2019 09:14

Thank dillydally, i’ll Have a look at that.

I think it was on another MN thread were someone suggested that “alien” could be to us, what we are to tiny insects. So we’re just going about our business and there is this whole massive life going on above us but they pay us no attention because we are just tiny insects that don’t pose any threat or give any interest to them at all.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 11/04/2019 09:15

I know.

Sorry, I thought you were commenting to prove me wrong. I clearly misunderstood. No offence intended.

Moralitym1n1 · 11/04/2019 09:17

*paid bonding

That sounds like something else entirely wink grin*

As soon as I saw the typo I thought, oh shit that sounds like prostitution Confused.

AlunWynsKnee · 11/04/2019 09:19

It's technically possible to have 18th C grandparents.
If I was 79 now I would have been born in 1940.
If my father had been 80 when I was born then he'd have been born in 1860.
If his father had been 80 when he was born he'd have been born in 1780.

It relies on men living long and having children in later life but it could happen

ILoveMaxiBondi · 11/04/2019 09:20

So she goes, sits in the car, and gets out at home.

Good point! I wonder if she is thinking “well what the he’ll was the point in that?” Or is she’s just all typical dog thinking “awesome trip! I got to see my favourite trees, all the humans pushing food to their cars, saw a ball, fantastic.”

Justcarrymehome · 11/04/2019 09:21

That we never truly see ourselves. We only ever see a reflection of ourself. You never get the same view of yourself that others do. Hope that makes sense🤨

chooco19 · 11/04/2019 09:21

The Three deaths... not just weird but scared the hell out of me

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 11/04/2019 09:25

Yes! I often think about this.

And also, that you are the only person on the whole planet who sees the world as you do, even the people closest to you are not you? And they are the only people who see the world as they do.

Also, if your dad had ejaculated a few seconds later you wouldn't be here, you would be someone different. Would you still be you? I guess not.

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 11/04/2019 09:28

Last year I did one of those butterfly projects with my kids where you get the caterpillars and they turn to butterflies and it was fascinating. How do they know when to pupate? How do they know what to do when they are pupating, it's actually quite technical? How do they know when to hatch from the chrysalis and what to do?

Also, birds migrating - how the fuck do they know where to go? And homing pigeons?

StealthPolarBear · 11/04/2019 09:31

DanielRicciardosSmile no its been on another thread and I am desperately googling. Man born in 1799 has a son in say 1860. That man has a son in 1925,say. Still alive today

StealthPolarBear · 11/04/2019 09:32

With a grandparent (obv long dead!) born in 1799

Shitshitshitshit · 11/04/2019 09:32

awesome trip! I got to see my favourite trees, all the humans pushing food to their cars, saw a ball, fantastic

So pure Halo

Stairs. The floor gets higher a bit at a time and then you're above where you started.

Singing. Was thinking watching All Together Now. Humans vary the pitch of their voice, create an incredible range of noises that somehow evoke in the listener a sense of different styles and genres, even with no backing music. When it's done in a certain way, it sounds incredible and can move you to tears or joy. Done not so well you just don't want to hear it at all. Imagine humans had never discovered this simple pleasure? The world would be seriously lacking. And there's a huge industry built on this singing business. If you're born with a talent for it, it can change your life.

Bowchicawowow · 11/04/2019 09:34

I find that fascinating Stealth. Wasn’t it the actress Anna Chancellor who had an elderly relative who used to talk about Aunt Jane. Aunt Jane was Jane Austen!

whohaa · 11/04/2019 09:34

How oxygen actually poisons humans, and I'm not talking of pollution here. Oxygen is really bad for us.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 11/04/2019 09:38

Yes I’ve often wondered what it is about certain music/singing that seems to tap into a part of me I don’t have ready access to. But then the same music has no effect on other people. What is that??

BlindAssassin1 · 11/04/2019 09:39

That the male of the human species have dominated history, not just in our country or culture, but through the history of time and pre-civilization. I mean, I get it that women gestate and are usually physically weaker but still it blows my mind. Its weird that its happened always with v few exceptions.

That traits are heritable: like my dog is a mixed breed but one trait of one 'half' of his mix is to be realllly territorial about anyone coming near the house. My old dog (different breed) was much less so, in fact we used to joke that she'd let a burglar in and make them cups of tea. Both dogs were raised mostly by humans and had little contact with their mothers from an early age so it wasn't learned. How come the DNA for this trait becomes this behavior? Its not a thing like eye colour or mix of genetics plus environment, like height.. its a doing thing, a behavior. How does that even happen!!!

Sunandseaside · 11/04/2019 09:42

I love this thread and it needs to go in classics!

For me it’s having a baby. My husband and I live in a house but we multiplied and now there’s 3 of us. Suddenly we have this screamy baby who eats/ sleeps/ cries all the time but we love her and she smiles at us and laughs and I’m her Mum. Her face is unique. She’s 50% me and 50% DH. There’s never been anyone like DD before, she’s one of a kind and special.

But then there’s billions of other people on the planet who would say that about their own children. Grin

StealthPolarBear · 11/04/2019 09:43

here you go, grandchildren of man born in 1790 still alive
Or were in 2012 anyway :o

StealthPolarBear · 11/04/2019 09:48

Just seen I have had quite a few snarky comments and scepticism. Suggesting I don't know what the 18th century is.

Shitshitshitshit · 11/04/2019 09:50

Yes, fascinating isn't it!! How?!
