Pregnant with the coil: Has this happened to you?

I have 2 kids and I’m not having any more. I’m reaching the end of my second contraceptive implant (I’ve hated both of them) and I need a new method of contraception that doesn’t give me the rage with added hormones, so I’m considering the copper coil.

I was talking to my friend about this and she said about half the women she knows with one have fallen pregnant with one fitted!!

So, Mumsnet, if you have the copper coil and have used it for some time have you got pregnant?

My DH is willing to have the snip, but I’m a bit older than him and in 5 years probably won’t need contraception, so that seems a bit extreme.

Thinking about it, also good to hear from women using it who’ve had no problems or my replies will all be negative.

My mum did but this was years ago but hers used to always fall out too, I think it's quite rare same as getting pregnant on the depo shot or something sorry I'm no help

It happened to my mum too - my brother is 24 now though so maybe they've improved.

If I were you, I would graciously accept my husband's offer to get a vasectomy. Why even fuck around and risk yet more problems and a possible pregnancy? You THINK you may not need contraception in 5 years, but that simply may not be true. I think getting a vasectomy is the least your husband can do, considering everything you've gone through to bring your children into the world and then dealing with shit birth control. Make the appointment for him. You'll be SO glad you did.

Just to add. I’ve the coil, he’s had the snip since I got it in so I can get it out once we’ve had him tested to ensure it was successful. I’m done with hormones and mechanical things effecting my body to avoid pregnancy. It’s his turn.

BTW, there is nothing "extreme" about getting a vasectomy. It is a very simple procedure done in a regular gp office.

Hey, I’ve not had one myself but large studies show pregnancy rates of 0.1-1 pregnancies per 100 years of use, so very very effective. Copper coils can come out which is a risk, but you would generally notice and to be extra careful you can check your strings after each period.
The mirena coil (with hormones) tend to make your periods lighter not heavier so is much less likely to come out, and is even more effective. If you’re aged 45 or over then you can rely on it for contraception until the menopause.

Yeah, it was no bigger a deal than me going for my coil appointment. He was a bit tender and needed to rest that evening but seriously, they aren’t china dolls and have expected us to go through 1000 times more to give them their kids.

Probably won't need contraception - Suggest you discuss with your nurse. Contraception can still be required until mid 50s, depending on menopause

Thanks for all the replies. It does seem like lots of women have issues with it, despite he official failure rate being 0.8%.

Ok, I think I’m leaning toward him having the snip. Like @happyspud there will be a crossover period where we’ll need additional contraception. Yes, I know we should’ve thought about this earlier, oops.

I wonder if I get the coil and get it removed after 6 Months?

Aargh! I wish I’d thought about this earlier!!

I got pregnant on the copper coil.

They took it out because they said the chances of a late term miscarriage or perm birth were a lot higher if they left it in. Taking it out in the early stages also gave me a higher risk of an early miscarriage. She is 10 years old now.

My coil was perfectly in place too. It is rare though.

I have one at the moment but my partner had the snip 3 months ago so I am just waiting for him to get the all clear before I can get it out. I have had heavier and more painful periods than normal but other than that no problems. I had the implant for a year before this and I bled for 90% of the time it was in, I hated it so went for the copper coil as it has no hormones.

My partners vasectomy was the most simple thing ever, it was done in a clinic like at a GP surgery, he had to rest for the first 2 days and not pick our son up/any heavy lifting for a week and after that he has had 0 problems with it. No swelling, no pain, nothing. All of his friends thought he was insane getting it but we are 100% done with having children and he agreed it was only fair he get that done than me be on contraception for years and years.

Yes you can get it out whenever you want but I’ve heard bad reports of GPs refusing or delaying as they are expensive. My GP told me to come back for it out the moment I wanted as my DHs 2 yr long waiting for the snip letter finally arrived the day before my coil appointment. My 4th child is running about now thanks to difficulty getting him the snip and me getting the coil.

I’ve never heard of anyone getting pregnant with the Mirena coil and I know quite a few people who have it. It’s meant to be as effective as sterilisation. The copper non normal coil does have lower success rates so maybe it’s that one?

I have the Mirena. Have had it twice with few problems.

@princessdaff you’ve pretty much summed up my second implant. I’m bleeding 20/25 days a month. I hate it!! The first one was ok, but I’m not sure if the bleeding is menopause/implant/2kidslater so I just want a hormone free contraceptive so I can see what is actually going on with my body.

You are always going to hear the people who did get pregnant. Nobody is walking around saying 'I've got a coil and I'm totally not pregnant still'!

Personally I love my coil. I've got the copper one so I love the lack of hormones. It's made my periods heavier but I don't mind. Had it fitted for 5 years before I took it out to have DD1. Then it's been back in a year now with no issues and no unexpected babies.
