I live not far from a fairly, er, robust Essex new town, and we go the cinema there from time to time.
I have to say problems like those described here are fairly few and far between. there's a fair bit of chatting and phone use during the ads and trailers but as soon as the main film starts it all settles down.
I once saw a young guy being ejected by the staff for, I think, filming.

It's the same mentality whereby I've noticed it's becoming less and less unusual for people at the gym to jump on the treadmill, set up their phone/tablet/whatever, and then just play it on loudspeaker.

If we were all selfish enough to do that, it would be a cacophony.

MoaningMinniee · 07/04/2019 22:40

@WaxOnFeckOff YYYYY!! 'It's free innit' leads very very quickly to 'It's my right innit'.

Which is also why so many utter twunts think they have the right to expect the NHS/Police/Mountain Rescue to rescue them from whatever idiotic self inflicted disaster they've put themselves into.

Timewarpdancer · 07/04/2019 22:41

Ha ha serenity, I wonder if you are my sister, that’s exactly the kind of thing she would do.
This is why I go to the cinema for a morning matinee. The majority of the time I have the cinema to myself. Bliss

Notwiththeseknees · 07/04/2019 22:46

@Serenity45

Your user name 🤣 sublime!

I'm 55 and told a gatecrasher at a party last night "See that door? It's got your name on it. Off you go". Us GOW rock Grin

Betty777 · 07/04/2019 22:56

whyamievenamazeddotcom It's Picturehouse.

The one at Piccadilly Circus even has a lovely rooftop bar Smile

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/04/2019 22:57

@MoaningMinniee Indeed!

DH and I went to the cinema in a big city with a rough reputation recently. Our DSs were at a concert so we were killing time and decided to go to see a movie (Stan & Ollie). Cost a fortune and despite the cinema being mostly empty, a couple sat behind us (arrived late) and then proceeded to chit chat all through the movie. It's not like it was an action film so noisy anyway. I'm not the most tolerant but given the local violent reputation and the fact I hadn't really clocked how big they were, I limited myself to a few headturns which had no effect whatsoever.

It got to the end and the lights went up and all I could think was that they weren't that big and DH and I could easily have taken them in a fight! :o DH had to remove me quickly from the cinema...

Proseccoagain · 07/04/2019 23:01

At a very expensive concert at the Royal Albert Hall once, the two women next to me were on Facebook the whole time, or texting and photographing. It got so distracting that in the end I asked them to stop - DH was mortified, but to my surprise they meekly put their phones away....
And I only go to a naice arts cinema which I have membership of, with wine in proper glasses. And it is cheaper than the local multiplexes. For my annual membership I get 3 free tickets and 10% off drinks and snacks. Once I have used my free tickets, normal ticket price for me is about £6.

Timewarpdancer · 07/04/2019 23:02

waxif the cinema was mostly empty why didn’t you just move? I know you were there first but it would have been better than sitting seething when it sounds like there was plenty of seats to move to

HotpotLawyer · 07/04/2019 23:05

I am a member of the poncey London cinema chain as well, Betty, because the audience at our local Odeon behave like rutting wildebeest. And smell worse.

I justify the cost due to the free Preview screenings and the 20% of food and drink.

@Timewarpdancer - i didn't even think of that! Christ but I am thick sometimes.... :o

To be fair, it was quite cold so I was all snuggled in (and seething!)

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/04/2019 23:11

Here is the story about our cinema prices.

ellendegeneres · 07/04/2019 23:20

Last few times, I’ve been with dp and he’s not someone you’d want to mess with on sight. Tall, broad, muscular stocky bloke. Which works for me, because I look (because I am) disabled, which makes me a target.

Problem is I kind of.. like(?!) being a target. Cause if they’re messing with me, others get to enjoy the movie and the troublemakers don’t know what’s gonna hit them 😂😂
I might look meek and weak, but when some twat picked up one of my crutches and started playing with it, refused to hand it back and started jabbing my seat violently with it, I don’t think he was expecting me to get up, grab his very full drink and empty it all over him.

He got the honours of the walk of shame out of the cinema and I got to enjoy the film in peace. Could have heard a pin drop after that, nobody wants to mess with the crazy woman in row g 😂😂

Betty777 · 07/04/2019 23:22

HotpotLawyer yep, 20% discount off really overpriced snack and bar prices Grin

but I've justified the cost but using the bar basically as a members club and sitting there with friends for hours drinking (rooftop bars with actual chairs being hard to come by in Central London) and also as a co-working space and/or study when hiding from my child on weekends (good wifi) Totally worth it. The film audience is just a bonus really

slappinthebass · 07/04/2019 23:34

I work in a cinema. We have to do several screen checks during each film. I assume all cinema chains have the same policy, keep your eye out because we are there to try and prevent this kind of thing but no one really takes advantage and comes and tells us about any disturbances. I ask people to turn their phones off quite a lot. I usually just have to walk up and glare at them, but when that doesn't work I'm going to start snatching trainers off and throwing them. Fantastic tip Serenity Grin.

Rachel0Greep · 07/04/2019 23:35

I'm sad to see this mentality is also rife in the theatre and concert hall. I've spent a small fortune to listen to a professional performer, only to be deafened by out of tune warbling/chatting/noisy sweet wrappers by the audience

Oh lord yes. Bad in the cinema but so much worse, IMO, when at a live performance.
Particularly tense moment on stage...crackle crackle, unwrap sweet... Fuck off!

S1naidSucks · 07/04/2019 23:51

NB as we are in London it's about £15 a ticket if we didn't have a pass.

Good grief! How do people on lower income have a nice life in London, at those prices! Yes, I know it’s not just about money, but it helps.

It’s £15 here for our local luxury tickets, which includes proper reclining seats. NI.

llangennith · 07/04/2019 23:56

In a cinema in Cardiff a woman kept texting on her phone so I went out and told the usherette (right word?) She came in and told the woman to turn it off. Woman argued that it was on silent and was told turn it off or leave. She chose to switch it off.
Cinema staff are usually good at enforcing 'etiquette'.

NearlyVegan · 08/04/2019 00:10

No to the feet on furniture that's shit behaviour but I have restless leg syndrome and can't not bounce so I'd feel terrible if I'd annoyed someone with something that I really can't physically stop.

Bemusedagain · 08/04/2019 05:15

Read the thread and now I want to know where the cinema is that delivers cheese to your table!! I’ve never heard of such a thing. That sounds brilliant!
