Believe what a medium has said?

Has anyone had a reading from a psychic medium (or like) and had something exactly came true? Not something vague but something specific almost word for word?

“Told me that is despise liars... ”

Unlike the rest of us who think they are the nicest sort of people?

Pharlapwasthebest · 07/04/2019 08:41

Also, my husband had a really bad accident. Two ladies went to a psychic, the one that was connected to dh was there to keep the other one company, and just sat on the outskirts knitting.
The psychic spoke to her, and talked about the accident in some detail, and gave the name of a dead close friend who was looking out for him. So, she was not even paying to see the psychic..

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 07/04/2019 08:41

Hmm, Im always opened minded. Although I think the majority are charlatans.

Someone at work told me something, so obscure, it couldn't possibly be lucky guessed, that would happen in the future. And it did.

Someone I barely knew, a passing hello at a childrens club, no common acquaintances, came up to me, apologised for the intrusion, told me to be careful driving near woods and did the name X mean anything? Got home BIL, abroad, had come off the road in a rural area, and X was the nurse in the hospital. This happened at the same time blokie approached me. Have to be a bloody good coincidence to know all that within seconds of it happening.

DantesInferno · 07/04/2019 08:41

you only remember the ones that 'come true' you forget the ones that dont

Ilikeslippers · 07/04/2019 08:42

A friend went to a famous psychic - had to wait months to see him he was so popular. She was amazed by all the detail he told her about her life so far. But he failed the acid test. He made a prediction about the big thing in her life. He was 100% certain about it. He was wrong. It never came true.

So he must have just been very good at reading her reactions (or used the months she had to wait to research her life...)

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 07/04/2019 08:43

There are charlatans out there yes, but there are also genuine here.

Pharlapwasthebest I will pose my question to you as well. If you actually believe this please tell me why nobody has yet won the One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge?

Surely if there were any genuine ones at least one of them would have won it.

A male colleague went to a medium. She urged him very strongly to take his car to the garage. Also that he would move to Scotland for a new job and meet a woman who he would marry, sounds ridiculous?

He was sceptical but went to a garage anyway.
A mechanic then told him that his car was in a very dangerous state (brake cable) and that it was a miracle that he hadn't been in a fatal accident. He'd previously arranged a job interview in Scotland which she couldn't possibly have known about and he did indeed move up there and met his wife. So, very specific and it was true.

Pharlapwasthebest · 07/04/2019 08:46

@ice rebel@
She firstly told me it was really odd as there were 2 dads for me (I've had a dad and a stepdad pass), she knew sd name was 3 letters and gave me the correct first letter. She knew how he died, and who was with him, she knew how my gd died and who was with him, she knew that I talked about my sd more than my dad, she knew what they died of. She knew how many children I had and told me about them.
There's so much it was a few years ago and I can't remember. My mum is a massive skeptic and she couldn't believe the stuff she'd said. My friend has also been to this woman, and she's had the same experience with her. She's so good she has a waiting list of approx a year and a half, but she's only about £30.

IceRebel · 07/04/2019 08:48

She's so good she has a waiting list of approx a year and a half

That's a long time to do research on people.

Witchend · 07/04/2019 08:48

I think most of it is that people who go to mediums generally want to believe, so if they say general things then people will twist it into their situation.

How many of the below could you twist into saying it's you?

You have a dd who has brought joy into your life.
There is something red that has particular significance to you.
In your house there is one room that feels colder than the others.
In 1999 there was a significant event.
Your mum has had health issues which are resolving.
Three is an important number.
You have an item of clothes that is meaningful to you, but you should throw away.
You have had a promotion at work.

All of which I have totally made up. Then if you want to believe, you twist and I suspect often add the bits in themselves. So for example on the first one, they start saying "you have a dd..." and the person gasps and says "how did you know, I have a dd and I have a..." Medium jumps in with "and you also have a son who is about to do something important" and the person thinks "oh yes, he's going to secondary school next year..."

strangerthongs did it not occur to your dm that the friend might well have given most of the information.
"I'm hoping to come with a friend, she's a bit sceptical but it would be really good if you could help her as she's a bit worried about her dad who has breathing difficulties. It's hard for her mum because she sometimes struggles with the English medical terms. Of course it depends on whether she can get a babysitter, as she's got two small daughters..."

I think mediums are a mixture of broad predictions that people twist into their own situation (let's face it, most of the people they talk to want to believe) and people who are quick on the uptake.

On the big theatre ones I suspect they have paid people mingling before the show and noting things down (Person in the green jumper in the second row is worrying about her baby as it's the first time she's left them with a babysitter).Things that people say in small talk-or even things they hope the medium will tell them ("I'm here because I'm hoping he's got a message from my dm who passed away last year")

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/04/2019 08:51

IMO it's one of those things you're never going to believe unless something happens to change your mind. I have never visited a medium, and probably never will, so can only judge by the experience of family who would never make things up.

My mother (always a highly sensitive type anyway) was occasionally acutely telepathic over long distances - she would know at the time - not after the event - exact details of trauma or distress in a family member even 2000 miles away. But it only ever happened in such very rare circs (so could never have been proved under lab conditions) and I'd never have believed it if I hadn't had cast-iron proof on those specific occasions.

So I do think some people's brains have 'extra wiring', so to speak, which can't be explained by current scientific knowledge.

Pharlapwasthebest · 07/04/2019 08:51

@whattodoaboutwailmer
I've never heard of it so I can't really comment, but if you were genuine at your job, why would you feel the need to prove it. I think it's more likely that the charlatans are chancing their luck with that kind of thing, and the genuine people out their are quietly going about their business trying to help others.

Nomad86 · 07/04/2019 08:52

There's an amazing tedtalks on YouTube by James Randi on the subject, fascinating stuff where he debunks the whole thing.

Pharlapwasthebest · 07/04/2019 08:53

@ice rebel
I made sure she only had my name, nothing else. How much research can you do on that. And also, there was stuff she knew that she could not have researched. Where is it written down exactly who was with my grandad when he died, and things that he said.
I totally agree that there are some despicable people out there, but there are also some genuine people, and she really truly could not have researched, or read me for a lot of the stuff she said.

AirBiscuit · 07/04/2019 08:58

I went to a psychic who told me that I would shortly be losing a large sum of money to a con artist. She then charged me £300.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 07/04/2019 08:59

and the genuine people out their are quietly going about their business trying to help others.

Pharlapwasthebest Don’t be so naive. You seriously believe not a single one of those “genuine” psychics wouldn’t take a million dollars if they could? Ridiculous.

Bringbackthestripes · 07/04/2019 08:59

Nope. My mum had a reading and they told her I would meet and marry a man from abroad and live there, I would be married for life and be happy.

Wrong.

UnicornButterfly · 07/04/2019 09:00

I was 200% sceptical as well. However, can anyone please tell me how a medium could possibly have known the following:

I went with a friend to a 'reading'. There were also four other people. At the time I was waiting for an appointment at the breast clinic as I had a painful area in one beast. No one knew this AT ALL except me and DH (who wasn't at the 'reading').
The male medium told me some things which, apparently, my Dad (who'd died two years previously) was telling him. Some of these things were bizarre and couldn't possibly be known BUT the real shock was when he was finishing and he started rubbing the left side of his chest. He looked at me and said 'your father says you're worried about a pain here. He says it'll be fine and it's nothing.'
Thankfully my breast was indeed fine, as a scan revealed. But HOW ON EARTH could that man have known about it?????

IceRebel · 07/04/2019 09:01

I made sure she only had my name, nothing else. How much research can you do on that.

In a year and a half I would imagine quite a lot of research, depending on your name. Also how did you book the medium, phone, email? If so there's another lead for them to get information.

There was a thread on here a long time ago, asking for people to volunteer to have the OP try and find information about them. I believe it has since been deleted, but the OP found children's schools, home addresses, phone numbers etc. I wonder if anyone else remembers it, it was very eye opening about online data and how much we actually share without meaning to.

FaithInfinity · 07/04/2019 09:04

‘you only remember the ones that come true’...not necessarily, I had a colleague who was a Wiccan and claimed to have psychic powers. She said soon after I was married that I’d get pregnant and it would be ‘sooner than you think’. It took 2 years 8 months of actively TTC with investigations and treatment of an underlying health problem before I actually got pregnant!

I’m very skeptical. I think most people are simply out to make money and they are simply good at getting information and reading people.

My Mum and Grandma believed in psychics because my Grandma’s friend went to see one who said she would marry again...she joked what would happen to her husband. Years later he died suddenly, quite traumatic situation really. She did marry again so clearly my family thought the psychic was right!

BertrandRussell · 07/04/2019 09:04

A lot of mediums “scattergun” and people only remember the “hits”

Incidentally, the breast pain one was incredibly irresponsible. What if you had taken it at face value, not gone to your appointment and it had turned out to be cancer?

SerenDippitty · 07/04/2019 09:06

I often wonder whether if people are told something specific by a medium they subconsciously go out of their way to make it happen. Say you’ve been told you will move to Scotland for a job and coincidentally a job in Scotland comes up. It’s like hypnotism - some people are more susceptible to being hypnotised than others.

LazyFace · 07/04/2019 09:08

I have once. Corporate Christmas party. My friend and I went for a reading. She said exactly what we both wanted to hear. I believe with practice most people can develop their intuition. Of course none of what she said was true (the boss I fancied at the time wasn't secretly in love with me and hook up with someone else on the same night 😂).

UnicornButterfly · 07/04/2019 09:08

I did think that, Bertrand, but I would never have cancelled the appointment - I truly hope no one else would have either but I guess it depends how fervently someone believes.
But I'd still love to have an explanation or suggestion as to how he knew...

BertrandRussell · 07/04/2019 09:10

When people keep recordings of readings and listen to them later, they are always much less specific than they thought the were. We really help the mediums because we want it to be true, or we wouldn’t have gone for the reading!
