to not have a clue what to write in a 'with sympathies' card?

For a young man in his early 30s whose dad just passed away quite suddenly? I wasn't going to get him a card but he made a comment to my brother about how the lovely messages in the cards are really helping him through. He's a lovely bloke and I'm gutted for him.

Help? Want to write something impactful but I'm awful at this kind of stuff Sad

I would tend to go with ‘I’m so sorry for your loss’, something nice about his dad if you knew him and an open ended offer of help/company, ‘thinking of you and your family.

I don't actually know him that well, never met his dad but chat to him most weeks as he lives with my brother. Thank you.

Thinking of you at this difficult time
Sorry for your loss

Bless you it's a lovely thought. As you didn't know the dad just tell him you are sorry he's going through a hard time and you are available if he wants to talk.

fukkigucci · 05/04/2019 21:30

“I’m very sorry for your loss. I hope your memories bring you comfort at this difficult time. From _

You can’t ‘solve’ the pain but a short meaningful message lets him know you’re thinking of him.

recklessgran · 05/04/2019 21:31

Definitely send a card OP and write from the heart. Something like
" I'm so sorry for your loss and just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you at this very sad time."

Slimmer2018 · 05/04/2019 21:32

Send something, he’s young and maybe most of his friends will send social media messages, to receive a card means so much more but is old school so he may not get many - do it - just say you are so sorry and you are there for him - he will get comfort in that you are thinking of him x

AdaColeman · 05/04/2019 21:32

I hope the pain of your loss will be eased by memories of happy times with your Dad.

Nnnnnineteen · 05/04/2019 21:32

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. There is nothing I can say to make it better, but do know I am thinking of you all and sending love/prayers/keeping you in my thoughts. Wishing you strength at this difficult time and in the coming days.

LegoPeopleEverywhere · 05/04/2019 21:33

"I'm so sorry for your loss and just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you at this very sad time."

This. I usually write something about a nice memory I have of the person who's died too, but obviously that's not applicable in this instance.

PillowTalker · 05/04/2019 21:33

John,

I was really sorry to hear about the recent death of your dad, I hope you're doing OK at this tough time.

We're all thinking of you and your family.

Love

I’d just keep things short and simple.

I was very sorry to hear the news about your Dad and wanted to let you know my thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time.

There will be lots of suggestions if you have a google.

NotWhatWhat · 05/04/2019 21:36

Xposted with everybody. I like PillowTalkers suggestion.

This is surprisingly useful!

InfiniteCurve · 05/04/2019 21:54

I think with sympathy cards you need to just write what comes to you.But it's difficult, especially finishing the sentiment off.

florentina1 · 05/04/2019 22:27

Everything is very personal but for me I don’t like the vague and alluding to death.
I would write Dear .. I was so very sad to hear about the sudden death of your father. Please know that I am thinking of you at this very sad time.
Deepest condolences

florentina1 · 05/04/2019 22:29

I was so very sorry I mean. Don’t need two sands.
