To stick the kids clothes in the f***king dryer??

We have 2 kids, 1 and 3, who generate a lot of washing. We also have a washer dryer.

DP infuriatingly insists on taking out the kids clothes from the wash and hanging them up to dry. Every. Single. Day.

Believes that the washer dryer will shrink the clothes.

Creates a ton of extra work for us that I reckon is not needed.

I don’t have the energy to argue about it but DP constantly moans about the never ending washloads and yet doesn’t see the martyrdom!

AIBU to stick the bastard clothes in the dry cycle or will they really all shrink to nothing???

I tumble dry things but rarely from scratch. I hang things up then dry them in the dryer to finish them off. It helps so much with the washing. When the better weather comes in, I would hang it outside and rarely use the dryer as most comes in bone dry.

Toodleoopuddle · 03/04/2019 21:00

We tumble dry all the kids clothes.. there's a setting which is longer but cooler.

clairedelalune · 03/04/2019 21:01

I dry pretty much everything in the tumble dryer.... allergies/hayfever mean even in summer not really an option..plus physically don't have enough hours in the day. My clothes appear to shrink but I think that is due more to my expanding waistline rather than using the dryer 😂 Do kids fut clothes long enough anyway to notice them shrinking in tumble dryer???

neveradullmoment99 · 03/04/2019 21:01

I also quite like to do the school clothes as it comes out better and less to iron it.

neveradullmoment99 · 03/04/2019 21:02

I don't find any of my kids clothes shrink with maybe the exception of some socks.

HappyLife21 · 03/04/2019 21:02

Clothes shrink, but only a little bit, and only once. So you just buy them a bit roomy.

OneDayillSleep · 03/04/2019 21:03

I also have a 3 and 1 year old and never stop washing. Our dryer is hammered constantly. I’m just careful, I remove anything that is woolly, anything with them iron on prints type thing and then put it on a synthetics cycle (we have a beko). It doesn’t really shrink anything as it has a sensor so when the clothes are dry it stops itself.

When we had our first child we were staying at my in-laws while we were renovating our house. My mother in law kept putting the baby clothes in their dryer from the 1980s that made all her beautiful newborn outfits and baby grows etc come out doll clothes sized. She ruined so many things, but it was a v old dryer, only 1 setting (roast to death) with no sensor. Nightmare. I used to get up in the night to do washing so she couldn’t intercept and put them in the dryer, it was a long 6 months...

Use your dryer (as long as it isn’t from the 1980s).

Yabbers · 03/04/2019 21:04

All DDs clothes go in the drier. They rarely shrink.

LilQueenie · 03/04/2019 21:05

unless its wool chuck them in. buy a bigger size next time if you notice shrinkage. Do what saves you time and money or get him to do all the washing if he is so pernikity.

DrWhy · 03/04/2019 21:05

The dryer definitely shrinks (and fades) clothes. I still use it for everything I can, cheap stuff, vests, joggers etc. I hang up everything I care about - basically the expensive stuff. DH can’t figure out my system and is scared of getting it wrong so hangs everything just in case. That’s fine by me, I’d rather he did that than tumble dried everything and potentially wrecked something I care about. Plus for clothes like Frugi and JoJo it keeps them in better condition for resale.

JaneEyre07 · 03/04/2019 21:05

I buy up a size. And dry on gentle heat.

Life's too bloody short.

Yabbers · 03/04/2019 21:06

@Onedayillsleep.

Does your sensor dry actually dry the clothes? Ours leaves them really damp, unless you use the “extra dry” setting high is a high heat setting.

DuffBeer · 03/04/2019 21:07

It definitely shrinks clothes. However, that doesn't stop me from using it!

I've never had an issue with shrinkage. I put towels, bedding, vests and some kids clothes in dryer usually. Makes life easier.

HJWT · 03/04/2019 21:12

I normally hang all DD's stuff, we have dryer that has settings such as "extra dry" OR "cupboard dry" 😂 not low setting the other day i just could not be assed so i shoved all her clothes on a cupboard dry and hoped for the best!!! All the Next clothes were fine 2 of her nursery tops from Matalan look a size to small now though 🤣🤣🤣

OneDayillSleep · 03/04/2019 21:13

Yabbers you sometimes need to shove it on again depending on what’s in, but it’s better having to start it again than tiny roasted clothes! Second go always gets them dry I find. Cupboard dry just roasts the clothes, only towels, bedding and shirts go on that... god I sound so old. Haha

lotusbell · 03/04/2019 21:25

Cannot believe all these people who don't have time to hang washing out!!! Shock

Ilovemypantry · 03/04/2019 21:27

My DH is exactly the same. Only he hates me using the tumble dryer because of the cost, not any other reason. I only use it during the winter anyway as I much prefer hanging the washing out in the fresh air. My DH is the laziest man on the planet but as soon as the washing machine stops, he’s there getting it out and hanging it all round the house! Drives me insane.

GruffaIo · 03/04/2019 21:30

I hang everything (clothes, nappies, wipes, etc), but use a dehumidifier if drying indoors. It works well.

Jazzybeats · 03/04/2019 21:31

Oh the hilarious thing is that our clothes will stay in. The kids clothes will come out. And they don’t get hung outdoors but on a drying rack indoors.

@lotusbell
I agree, hanging washing out isn't a huge task, tumble dryers aren't particularly environmentally friendly either, I got rid of mine 7 years ago.

katseyes7 · 03/04/2019 21:34

l dry almost everything outside (when the weather's decent) but l tend to give some stuff a short tumble to get the fluff off - l have house rabbits and a lot of black clothes!
l do have one of those Lakeland heated airers though - they're cheap to run and not as quick as a tumble dryer, but they're fine for most things.

lotusbell · 03/04/2019 21:35

@Bookworm4, I understand using one in winter or for a quick fix and for those who have no outdoor drying space, but to say you dry all your clothes in one because you don't have enough time to hang washing out is ludicrous!

Inapickle230 · 03/04/2019 21:36

Our clothes have never shrunk (apart from a woolen jumper I accidentally left in). My dryer was a game changer, so much easier and it’s the only way to get fluffy towels.
