To stick the kids clothes in the f***king dryer??

We have 2 kids, 1 and 3, who generate a lot of washing. We also have a washer dryer.

DP infuriatingly insists on taking out the kids clothes from the wash and hanging them up to dry. Every. Single. Day.

Believes that the washer dryer will shrink the clothes.

Creates a ton of extra work for us that I reckon is not needed.

I don’t have the energy to argue about it but DP constantly moans about the never ending washloads and yet doesn’t see the martyrdom!

AIBU to stick the bastard clothes in the dry cycle or will they really all shrink to nothing???

IME combined washer dryer is useless for drying clothes, They are expensive to run, takes the dryer half an hour to dry the machine from the wash, totally off topic.
Otherwise YANBU I love my sensor dryer, I rarely iron, I am ready to flatten the kids items ceaseless and put them away all in an hour, I hate washing hanging around to dry.
Unless it is a heat wave my dryer is on once or twice daily it doesn't cost lots it's a good energy rating. Tell him to hang the items likely to shrink.

Greenlegobox · 03/04/2019 20:33

We dry all dds clothes in the dryer. We have an eco one that isn't very hot though. No fucking way am I hanging them up. Life is full enough of drudgery as it is.

EggplantVestibule · 03/04/2019 20:34

I tumble dry most of ours when the weathers too great, only those that can be tumble dried though. Mind you, we have solar panels so it doesn't cost us anything during the day, so Our dryer probably gets more use than it would otherwise. The only thing we've ever had shrink were some kids jeans, I hadn't checked the label and they had to be hung dry. I don't understand why your DH can't just look at the label or trust you to.

EggplantVestibule · 03/04/2019 20:34

*not great

lotusbell · 03/04/2019 20:35

Hang on, hes the one hanging them outside and you're complaining that he is doing this? What extra work does it create, unpeghing and bringing inside? Cant you do it his way and you do it your way? Pegging out when the weather is nice is better for the environment and saves you money so I cant see the problem. I've never had a dryer and struggle sometimes, especially in winter but I don't have the room or the money to have one so I've no choice. First world problems or what?

lotusbell · 03/04/2019 20:36

I meant can't he do it his way and you do it yours!

Whatsnewpussyhat · 03/04/2019 20:36

I only find things shrink if they are dried too much. I take them out when very slightly damp and hang up school stuff etc. No issues.

If he's too tight to use the dryer would he buy one of those Lakeland airer things? Cost less to run. No shrinking.

I don't understand why you even need his permission to use the bloody dryer though.

Shazafied · 03/04/2019 20:38

I do a load, whip out anything that might shrink and tumble dry EVERYTHING ELSE. In the summer, when I’ve got time, I’ll hang up what I can but if I’m too busy with my little ones it’ll be getting tumble dried!

merrymouse · 03/04/2019 20:38

In my experience washer dryers don't work very well - better than nothing if you want to speed up the drying process in an emergency, but you still have to hang things out to dry for a bit.

speakout · 03/04/2019 20:39

I don;t have a tumble drier, line dry year all year round.
OH doesn't use the washing machine- problem solved!

SileneOliveira · 03/04/2019 20:40

We don't have a dryer. We have three kids. We live in Scotland.

They are so hungry on energy and an environmental disaster. Whenever it's dry, out the clothes go. And they smell so much better too.

Jazzybeats · 03/04/2019 20:43

My way is not allowed! So DP does it and then is a martyr about it. But consensus seems to be that clothes do shrink.... argh so I’m wrong.

Dammit. I was hoping to use this thread as evidence of irrational behaviour 😂😂

Kids clothes can shrink. So go up a size and shove in the dryer.

InternetArgument · 03/04/2019 20:44

I put my son’s trousers in the microwave once. They came out dry and everyone looked at me as if it were witchcraft

bibbitybobbityyhat · 03/04/2019 20:44

I am your dp in this argument. Only use the dryer as a last resort.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 03/04/2019 20:46

Delicate cycle - doesn't shrink and uses less energy

RomanyQueen1 · 03/04/2019 20:51

I only use our dryer if necessary, nice weather it's on the line and maybe a quick spin in dryer to air.
It's expensive to use the dryer when you don't need to.

Merename · 03/04/2019 20:53

This is funny as I have been your DP until recently, and gotten irritated with DH for shrinking everything, BUT I have recently had an epiphany that life is too short to be hanging fucking clothes millions of hours a day and decided to change my ways. Chucking them in the drier feels decadent.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 03/04/2019 20:53

My DH is the opposite. Will use the dryer for anything and everything, despite it being a nice day. It infuriates me because it’s so lazy.

However, when it’s really needed I don’t mind the dryer being used for the kids clothing. Just not mine because he shrunk several items when we first got it Hmm

Greenlegobox · 03/04/2019 20:56

Our dryer is very economical to run. I think I love it more than my husband. Not more than my dishwasher though.

MatchSetPoint · 03/04/2019 20:57

My sons M&S polo shirts always shrink in the wash now I just buy a size up and hope for the best, I used to hang everything up rather than tumble drying but I just got annoyed at having washing around the house constantly.

TurquoiseLagoon · 03/04/2019 20:57

He can hang them out if he wants but HIBU to bloody moan about it. He can do it or not but he has to do it quietly!

SoyDora · 03/04/2019 20:57

I tumble dry 90% of our clothes. I’m a SAHM to 3 children and there’s not a chance I’m creating more work than is necessary. Some things shrink, but not much.

Greenlegobox · 03/04/2019 20:58

Kids grow out of clothes in about 5 mins anyway so as pp say, just get a bigger size, fire them in the dryer and have a cup of tea.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 03/04/2019 21:00

I’m with your husband. Tumble dryer is only for emergencies.
With a washer dryer, you have to take out some of the items to dry, otherwise they don’t have enough space to toss around enough.
