To ask if you know anything about foster care/parenting in 1950s England?

Yeah, another book question. I just wondered if anyone had any first hand knowledge and could provide anecdotal info about the setting. Whether fostering meant a large home, or with a family etc.

I've got all the info on adoption but not fostering.

Thanks in advance

There was a National Children's Home at Harpenden. The children lived in 'cottages' with a house mother I believe. They used to hold open days, and I remember visiting and thinking I would love to live there.
There is quite a lot about it online (and of course it wasn't always as wonderful as it seemed.)
