Engineered wood floor

We’ve had an engineered wood floor laid In the kitchen and it’s an absolute nightmare to maintain. It’s an oiled floor and every splash of water or any food that the kids drop if not wiped up immediately, stains. I can’t believe everyone who has a wood floor has to do what I do which is walk around with a cloth in my hand wiping constantly. Or Aibu and this just to be expected with a wood floor?

We have a fucker of an engineered wood floor as well. Ours is very, very dark brown and looked fabulous when new. And still does in the hall and lounge, but in the kitchen extension where we have high traffic, it's a bloody nightmare. It scratches and marks to buggery (but have now found products that mostly fill this in) and the latest problem are two big triangle white marks where the cleaner left the floor steamer on the floor without moving it despite me warning her this would happen. It looks terrible and we're about to put the house on the market. Next time I'm going for polished concrete or wood effect tiles. Grrrrrrr.

I grew up in a country where wood floors were very common (and carpets rare as considered unhygienic and generally disgusting). People still avoided having wood in the kitchen though for precisely the reasons you mention. Vinyl all the way.

We have wooden floors in the hall and dining room, fine. Kitchen- never!

I had a Ted Todd engineered floor laid in my kitchen about 9 months ago and I've actually been surprised at how resilient it is.
I am intending to give it an extra coat of oil though (the same as used by Ted Todd) for additional protection.
I love it!

Nothing for my stains though.
We’re going to see if our builder can replace the effected boards.

I think it’s pretty well known that engineered board is a poor choice for kitchens, though. Didn’t you read up on this stuff before laying it?

To be honest the actual kitchen area has been better than the dining/lounge area of the kitchen extension. It has much higher traffic (the kids) than the kitchen area.

I did, and suggested amtico/kardean but my project manager insisted it would be fine! She has it and I know other people have it. I wondered if it’s something particular to the finish I have chosen as I didn’t think other people’s was as bad as mine. It’s all downstairs so hallway/ living area/kitchen/diner open plan.

Ours was like that when we first got it and I was gutted. We re oiled it and it's been fine since, water doesn't stain at all now. We used Osmo oil.

We have wooden floors everywhere, but laminate in the kitchen for this precise reason.

I love ours. It's very pale and shows every speck of dirt, but doesn't stain.

It's was well treated before we put it down though.

I’ve inherited engineered wood and they are a PITA. I’ve had one room, that was in a dreadful state, refinished which was insanely expensive but has improved matters and made it a lot easier to keep clean. I can’t afford to do the rest at the moment so have been using this stuff from Lakeland. It’s made a massive difference to appearance and resilience though you do need to do it every 3-4 months.

Maphe - yes I think we are going to have it re-oiled. Just annoyed that we would have to do that with a brand new floor! And also if we knew that, would have done it straight away before it’s already been stained (been using for around a month). Have you had to re-oil since?
