Ragging at rude checkout man

Cherylshaw · 01/04/2019 20:50

I don't know if i am bu and before i complain please tell me if i am.
Me and ds (4) and dd (1) were doing a big shop today in our local coop, i have never done their home delivery service before so decided to do that, i knew you had to fill out a wee form on a computer and sort out a card so i did all that before doing my shop choosing delivery slot of between 4 and 5 today. 2 kids in trolly did our shop and at the checkout told the chap it was for home delivery before he started.
He asked for the wee slip that should have been printed... I never collected it (never noticed it) so i told him just to start putting all the shopping through and like 6 bags and I'd be two seconds. Left the kids in trolly at till the computer thing was about 3 steps away from till, when i put card in it said card had been cancelled so had to do it all over again and there were no delivery slots left for today had to be 12-2 tomorrow.
So did that anyways get back to the checkout man and he was still scanning my stuff all a big pile with carrier bags at bottom of pile. There is now a cue behind ne, kids start acting up and I'm just ramming stuff into bags to clear it away so i don't hold anyone back (thought the checkout operated would have at least helped me bag the stuff but just sat there and watched me try and calm the kids and fill the bags. After i had put the bags into the trolly he says "you have to separate the fridge stuff, frozen, stuff and cleaning stuff" why the hell could he not tell me that when he watched me pack the bags! Yeh i probably should have known as it makes sense but i was just rushing. I told him just to leave the delivery, paid and filled the buggy with all the bags.
So aibu or should he have helped me out a bit or am in expecting too much and being precious?
(Should say i used to work in the coop down the road from this one and had to help him fix his till before he even started serving me)

He sounds pretty unhelpful.

I'm generally a very quick bag packer so am usually able to keep up with the cashier. If, for whatever reason, they finish before me, and they don't offer, I always hand them a bag and ask them to put fridge/chemical/whatever in it. I've never been refused.

RedDogsBeg · 01/04/2019 21:48

After your update then I agree he was rude OP and it wouldn't have hurt for him to be helpful.

DemelzaPoldarksshinerrefiner · 01/04/2019 21:53

He sounds like an absolute Tadger I hate people who think that they are keepers of the knowledge - especially when it makes someone else’s life more difficult than it needs to be. I would join his queue ALL the time and move slower than a sloth in slow season.

RedDogsBeg · 01/04/2019 21:54

Also I'm more inclined to help someone with a big shop rather than a basket of a couple of things. Maybe that's just me

I always appreciate it when people do this, OP.

RomanyQueen1 · 01/04/2019 21:54

I'm confused.
If you used to bag people's shopping you'd know to separate stuff.
In fact I've never worked in a supermarket and know this, it's bloody common sense.
He wasn't helpful and that was poor customer service.
At least you got to take your shopping home that day, instead of having to wait for it.

mclaleli · 01/04/2019 21:55

then you would have been more accurate to say 'your post appears to me to be a jumble of nothing, as I cannot make sense of it'

Sorry miss 😐

Perhaps the reason I said what I said rather then what you think I should have said is the same reason i found the post to be confusing.

Cherylshaw · 01/04/2019 21:59

@RomanyQueen1
We never had a delivery service in the shop i worked, and when i am packing other people's bags i do separate them. But when i bag my own stuff i just shove everything in where i can fit it! And as i was rushing i just never really thought

Who have you the insight to the working of my brain?

😂 I didn’t- you just made a statement that was incorrect.

But I do now Wine Wine

DemelzaPoldarksshinerrefiner · 01/04/2019 22:03

Cheryl how did you get it home? Were you in a vehicle ? Or did you have to buggy it back home ? What distance?

Cherylshaw · 01/04/2019 22:06

@DemelzaPoldarksshinerrefiner
I had to buggy it back home! With my 4 year old dilly-dallying behind me bloody mission
Only a 15/20 min walk so wasn't too bad

That home delivery service is strange. You have to go in, do your shopping & then get someone to deliver it. Surely you would be easier just taking it home with you.

What island do you live on? Some do get online deliveries.

BlackberryandNettle · 01/04/2019 22:10

I've had this before at a checkout with a crying newborn (No1). Checkout guy just sat there watching me pack - older woman at the next checkout jumped up to help pack so I could hold baby who stopped crying immediately. I wonder if they have to wait to be asked to help for some reason?? Some weird policy?

tinatsarina · 01/04/2019 22:10

@mclaleli it's hardly a jumble I could understand the OP's frustration

OP he could have said to u about the bags as u were packing as in oh if your still doing home delivery then can you separate the items. Or he could have started packing for you. Shit service for you. I'm not really understanding why other people can't see that.

mclaleli · 01/04/2019 22:11

didn’t- you just made a statement that was incorrect

Did I? I don't think so. I made a statement according to what i read. You read it differently, I'm not criticising you.

BlackberryandNettle · 01/04/2019 22:11

That was Waitrose, customer service seems to be hit and miss everywhere

DanielRicciardosSmile · 01/04/2019 22:11

Also very cheeky to say 'yeah but you should have known' makes the apology insincere and not mentioning earlier is at least thoughtless if not incompetent.

I agree, that would be cheeky. But it doesn't say that he said this. Let's not put words into people's mouths.

mclaleli · 01/04/2019 22:11

it's hardly a jumble I could understand the OP's frustration

So I keep getting told.

Cherylshaw · 01/04/2019 22:13

@RebootYourEngine
I know it's stupid but as i don't drive i thought it would be better than getting the dinner in everyday, i usually go to the mainland and pack a suitcase but not had a chance in a while
Believe me iv searched for delivering supermarkets but none deliver here

OP posts:
SemperIdem · 01/04/2019 22:15

Yanbu, he should have said something sooner.

DemelzaPoldarksshinerrefiner · 01/04/2019 22:26

I would complain to the store manager that the directions were unclear for delivery and the checkout operator was actively unhelpful, resulting in your questioning if they value your custom or not. I think it’s a very poor show tbh, but I would have tipped my bags back out over the checkout - and repacked them accordingly. ( if he turns out to be a new manager I’d write to the area manager )

blackcoffeeinbed · 01/04/2019 22:32

YANBU.. I'm a CA in a local store and it's my job to offer to pack for customers wether it's a bunch of bananas or a trolley full of groceries. I always do it with care and consideration ie grouping chilled products, tinned products etc heavy items first because it's giving good customer service which our store is well known for. Not every branch does offer this as I often have customers who are not local say they appreciate the effort as they don't receive that where they're from. This surprises me because I thought working in a customer service environment meant you offer the customer the best service you can! I would say your shopping experience today was a very poor example of that, and I personally would complain. If you go online I'm sure the CoOp would have a feedback questionnaire and you telling them about it will make a difference as no store wants negative feedback. I appreciate to some people working in a supermarket or smaller store isn't the dream career but I love my job and take pride from doing a good job but clearly this guy can't say the same.

OohYeBelter47 · 01/04/2019 22:34

Very inconsiderate of him.

recrudescence · 01/04/2019 22:42

He should have told you about how the bags were meant to be packed and offered to help. I suppose at least you’ll be better prepared next time.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 01/04/2019 22:43

Am I understanding correctly that you do the shop, put it through the check out, bag it up and pay for it, then they drive it to your house?

I can see why they need cleaning stuff etc in different bags but the checkout guy was being an arse to not help and to not mention this at the time.

abracadabraba · 01/04/2019 22:52

Your post is just a jumble of nothing

No it isn't. Clearly @mclaleli woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning!
