If you could move anywhere (in the UK)?
You don't have DC (yet) or any family commitments, work from home, and have about £250k in savings to buy a house. Where would you settle?

Currently live in a rural area in Sussex and it's lovely but if I had to move somewhere else it would be the new forest or somewhere in Cornwall!

isseywithcats · 31/03/2019 19:15

i would buy a really nice house where i live in Halifax as my family are here, my two jobs are here, my network of friends are here and i like living here

Meandwinealone · 31/03/2019 19:16

Cornwall is grim and deprived and empty in the winter. IMPO
I found it quite depressing in real life and not a holiday.

NicoAndTheNiners · 31/03/2019 19:25

Lake District.

Downinthetubestationatmidnight · 31/03/2019 19:29

Cornwall, probably Truro
Altrincham
Winchester

BlackeyedGruesome · 31/03/2019 20:12

I think South Wales coast in reach of Cardiff or Swansea.

We have holidayed on the west coast and found access to big supermarkets poor, and distance from a and e for DC very long. Depends what weather you like, if you like winter snow, go north. Also if you do not like heat. Think what accents you would not mind your children picking up.

Skyejuly · 31/03/2019 20:13

Winchester is a nightmare to live in!

SimonJT · 31/03/2019 20:20

I would stay where I am, Shoreditch, that budget could get you a nice shared ownership apartment.

Doubletrouble99 · 31/03/2019 21:34

We live in a lovely area of the Scottish Borders. 40 mins. on our new train line and I'm in the centre of Edinburgh. 24 hr supermarkets 5 mins down the road, cinema etc. Yet we live in a lovely small town with countryside on the door step.

Ivegotthree · 31/03/2019 21:47

Not Devon. So many people who love there because it's cheap move away again. It rains so much and feels quite bleak.

I feel the same about Scotland.

If you're wanting to move away from the Cotswolds then I'd suggest North Norfolk. So pretty there. Nice pubs. Big skies.

Eliza9917 · 31/03/2019 23:02

Rye or Sandwich or the Lake District.

Skyejuly · 01/04/2019 11:37

Ah east Anglia skies are Star

BikeRunSki · 01/04/2019 11:39

Alnwick

BlueSkiesLies · 01/04/2019 11:40

New Forest gets my vote too - lovely countryside, coast, easy enough access to cities and train or drive to London is Ok.

MrsScamander · 01/04/2019 11:45

After watching Fisherman's Friends it'd be Cornwall. It looks stunning.

LoisWilkerson1 · 01/04/2019 11:50

Edinburgh. Castle, beach, mountains, shops, museums, great food.

Geekster1963 · 01/04/2019 11:51

Yorkshire Dales

Kolo · 01/04/2019 12:08

I love where I live and don’t think I’ll ever move, due to having all my friends here. But if that wasn’t a consideration, I’d love to live in north Norfolk. We spend a lot of time there and it’s beautiful.

Skyejuly · 01/04/2019 13:09

New forest is ok but it's awful in tourist season. Worse than Cornwall. I grew up there.

user1480880826 · 01/04/2019 13:14

I second Helmsley in North Yorkshire.

Or Devon or Cornwall coast.

Intercity125 · 01/04/2019 13:55

I've been dipping in and out of this thread, Nc as likely outing but if I were in your fortunate position I'd definitely move to east Kent preferably sandwich, deal or broadstairs, some parts of ramsgate and Margate can be nice but they'd be my preferences.

Gorgeous homes, lovely beaches nearby, good weather mostly, good schools, not too cut off but a rural feel but Canterbury and London very easy to get to for city delights when needed, excellent public transport (essential for when the future dc are teens) and you could definitely get something in your price range though not a huge amount of choice it'd be a good start.

Megan2018 · 01/04/2019 13:59

Where I live now - rural East Mids.
Although our house was over £300k, but there is property for less.

Mesmeri · 01/04/2019 14:04

Another vote for Stirling! Waaaay cheaper than Edinburgh but only half an hour away (midway between Ed and Glasgow so you can easily commute to either for work) very close to the highlands for weekend outings... and a gorgeous town in it's own right (like a mini version of Edinburgh).

ScarletAnemone · 01/04/2019 14:12

Another vote for Edinburgh! The quality of life is just so good here. There’s lots going on, excellent public transport especially buses, good schools, and it’s only a short drive to stunning countryside and beaches.

The east side of Scotland is much drier than the west. East Lothian is especially dry and sunny and has miles of fabulous beaches.

EscapeAnywhere · 01/04/2019 14:12

I think I'm spolied in the Cotswolds with the fair weather - is the weather really do different further North? Thanks so much for the input, real experience is much better than guessing & Wikipedia...
