If you could move anywhere (in the UK)?
You don't have DC (yet) or any family commitments, work from home, and have about £250k in savings to buy a house. Where would you settle?

I love where I live in SW London, but could never get anything for £250k here sadly, so I'd say somewhere in the Cotswolds, maybe Tetbury or Kingham and surrounds.

EscapeAnywhere · 30/03/2019 21:28

It depends what you want out of life? Big city? Quiet rural area

Definitely not a big city, but not sure teeny tiny village either.

So a town, rural, but not middle of no where rural.

Been trying to decide for 2 years now, viewed dozens of houses far and wide, and visited so many places but no where felt like 'home'.

Great ideas here though.

Buxton or York.

LoopyLu2019 · 30/03/2019 21:30

Ross on Wye

Furrydogmum · 30/03/2019 21:32

North Yorkshire.. Rural but with suitable shopping options.

Crimebustersofthesea · 30/03/2019 21:35

Somewhere in Northumberland for me. Alnmouth maybe, close to Alnwick for a bigger town, train to Newcastle for a city. Love it up that way Smile

Crimebustersofthesea · 30/03/2019 21:37

Also train north to Edinburgh, I've sold it to myself!

QueenAnneBoleyn · 30/03/2019 21:37

Cotswolds or South Lakes

PhilomenaButterfly · 30/03/2019 21:39

North Wales.

Ikeameatballs · 30/03/2019 21:48

I’d look at Newcastle/North Tyneside

Is £250k your house budget?

Awks · 30/03/2019 21:49

North Yorkshire coast. Beautiful

BitOfFun · 30/03/2019 21:51

Where are the jobs you'd need?

Sophiewitch · 30/03/2019 21:58

Your budget won't get you much in the South of England or most cities. Shropshire rural areas of Wales (except the National Parks) you might get something small.

Ilovemypantry · 30/03/2019 21:58

Unfortunately 250k will not get you much in desired locations, even in rural areas.
Places like the Cotswolds, New Forest, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall command high premiums. You might get something in Wales or Scotland for that budget.

Numptysod · 30/03/2019 21:58

Edinburgh or London it’s hard! But Edinburgh wins as they wanna remain, healthcare better.

StoneofDestiny · 30/03/2019 22:00

Consider how important the weather is to you.
Midlands of England is a lot warmer and drier as is the south. Further north from that add snow and rain in greater quantities.

LizzieMacQueen · 30/03/2019 22:00

Elgin or Inverness. But as a PP said, check internet connectivity before you commit.

cheesenpickles · 30/03/2019 22:00

St Lawrence on the Isle of Wight or Bristol.

Roomchanging · 30/03/2019 22:01

Frome. You won’t get much/anything in Bath for £250k

AHintOfStyle · 30/03/2019 22:02

Edinburgh

cheesenpickles · 30/03/2019 22:02

Lol I didn't read that properly. I'd say somewhere like Portsmouth or Southampton. You'd get more for your money there but easily accessible to London and other lovely places but without the price tag.

fruitofthenight · 30/03/2019 22:07

Newcastle/North Tyneside or possibly northumberland. Specifically the coastal areas of Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Whitley Bay, Seaton Sluice 😍

Asgoodasarest · 30/03/2019 22:07

You say ‘yet’ to children, so does that mean they’re hopefully part of the plan? If so, I’d use that as my starting point. What does an area have that’s good for children, are there lots of family friendly things to do, what are the schools like etc.
Then think about whether you’d prefer to be more on the coast than inland and start whittling it down from there. £250k is a lot of money, but will still be short for many areas. Maybe look at what kind of house you’d like and see where it’s affordable? Again if you’re hoping for children I imagine you’ll need at least two beds and would like a garden?
Sorry that’s probably quite a boring, practical answer to your question!

SherlockHolmes · 30/03/2019 22:08

Dartmouth, Lymington or Swanage. Somewhere where there are boats and sea/river and it's not rainy all the time.

MiddleClassProblem · 30/03/2019 22:09

Maybe £250k is just the deposit? Ideally it could be a mortgage free property but do you have a limit with a mortgage or would you prefer outright ownership only?
