to ask if you would be able to run 5k?

DP and I had a breakdown about how fat we've got and registered for parkrun at 9am tomorrow.
DP will probably be fine, however I have never been a runner and now 5k seems like a lot.
I'm still in my twenties, was never the best at PE in school but not in anyway unwell or particularly unfit I suppose.
Would you be able to run 5k? And will I be able to with training whatsoever realistically? Or is it a fry up in bed kind or morning instead? Grin

Well done OP. You'll soon be addicted. 😁

Rystall · 30/03/2019 11:19

Well done OP!!! You’re brilliant!!

FudgeBrownie2019 · 30/03/2019 11:20

Congratulations OP, stick with it and you'll feel so much better for it.

I've always run so doing a 5k wouldn't be a problem, but I had surgery a few months ago and have had to build up my stamina as part of my recovery and it was so frustrating not being able to run. I believe quite strongly that it helps my mental health no end.

Iblinkedandiamold · 30/03/2019 11:20

Well done Anniehm. I'm waiting on my offical time but I'd say around 30/31 minutes. I use map my fitness but I start it before I start and I stop it after I've had my bar code scanned.

Mammyloveswine · 30/03/2019 11:24

I did a "wake up shake up" routine with my nursery class and was massively out of breath... signing up for the gym as i was megafit pre kids and i also think it will be good for my mental health.

I could not run 5k.

Fazackerley · 30/03/2019 12:24

I did my first ever full 5k park run today. I think I ran for about 27 mins and walked for 12 - was pleased to come in under 40. Even managed a sprint finish!!

DailyMailSucksWails · 30/03/2019 12:44

Glad you guys enjoyed it.

If [you] can't walk 5k on the flat in 45 minutes you should be very, very worried

I regularly run 5km+ but I can't walk 5km in

Iblinkedandiamold · 30/03/2019 12:57

I got a PB today. 29mins and 38secs. I did sprint at the end though. Happy with that. It's not really about time for me though. I use it to get out in the morning and clear my head before a day of course work. (Which I am putting off at the moment 🙈) . I started it to improve my mental health and now I have decided to do a mini marathon.(10k) in June.
I think my breakfast bananna helped this morning. 😁😁😁

I also work in Childcare and I find I have more get up and go. I think nothing of running around outside playing superheroes for 20/30 mins now. So many benifits. Should have started this excersise marlarky sooner.

flitwit99 · 30/03/2019 13:04

Hooray. I'm a massive parkrun fan and am always really happy to hear someone had given it a go for the first time and had fun.

Ive been going for years and still never got past 32 minutes but I don't care.

ShowOfHands · 30/03/2019 13:09

Hooray. Keep at it. It gets easier.

Mine took 22 minutes this morning. It was HARD but a few years ago, it took me 35 minutes.

septembersunshine · 30/03/2019 13:20

Op i have just started running after at least 10 years of not much activity.

Start slow. Get some good music on an ipod or your phone and just go for a very gentle jog. Then walk to recover a bit. Then jog again and gradually build up to jogging for longer lengths. No pressure. Just listen to your music. Honestly op. You can do this but start slowly so you don't get discouraged.

Thismummyruns · 30/03/2019 13:23

I came right to the end of this thread just to see if you went OP. So glad you did Smile

PandaG · 30/03/2019 13:40

Well done for doing it! I did my second park run today - well to be fair i jogged the first minute or so, then walked briskly the rest. Last week was my first, DH had just finished couch to 5 k and I went with him - he hasn't run for about 30 years and after doing the c25k he can run it all in about 27-8 minutes, not bad for an unfit bloke of 46. Son joined us both weeks too. He hasn't run since junior school, bar a bit of forced football and a pancake race a couple of weeks ago. No training at all, beat DH last week and knocked another couple of minutes off this. But then at 19 he should be fitter than us!

Purpletigers · 30/03/2019 13:56

Not unless being chased by zombies and even then I reckon they’d have me after 1 k .

HiGunny · 30/03/2019 13:56

Well done OP! It took me ages to work up the courage to go to my 1st one as I thought it'd be full of pros. In the end I ran it in just over 30 mins, now my times are 27-28 mins. I'm aiming for 25 Grin

Redcrayons · 30/03/2019 16:14

Well done OP.
We had loads of first timers there this morning, it's such a great atmosphere, it's sets me up for the weekend.

If you have time during the week maybe try and do 5k again, keep it at the same walk/run pace. It will stand you in good stead for next Saturday.

Purplejay · 30/03/2019 16:16

I couldn’t run for a bus!

Scrumptelicious · 30/03/2019 16:22

Well done OP! Parkrun is just great.
I would also definitely recommend Couch to 5k as others have suggested. This is how I stared a few years ago. I continued to build on this and recently did my first half marathon.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 30/03/2019 16:34

I ran my first 5k without running beforehand but I did a lot of walking and some swimming. I managed to shuffle until the 2k mark and then ran/walked the rest. After that I got the bug and did a 10k, joined a club and have run more than 300 parkruns. It's the best thing ever. I may be a little obsessed

havingtochangeusernameagain · 30/03/2019 16:35

PS so glad you went.

Blueberryblueberry · 30/03/2019 16:36

Well done op! Park run is a lovely way to start running- enjoy beating your pb over the coming weeks Smile

Excited101 · 30/03/2019 16:37

Great! Well done op!

I did that once a couple of years ago, and now I’m training to run a marathon!

villagesecret · 30/03/2019 17:42

I'm a runner and have had many people start with me and if we go straight off and run 5k without any training there has only been one who hasn't achieved 5k in under 40 minutes. Is really a fast v fast walk pace.

Fazackerley · 31/03/2019 11:35

villagerunner I'm presuming they were youngish or had some base fitness. I just about managed under 40 mins yesterday and ran for 27 mins and walked fast for 12! There were 50 behind me.

c75kp0r · 31/03/2019 11:50

I've been going to the gym 3 times a week for about 3 months now and am pushing myself reasonably hard - I could do about half a km without feeling like death when I first started and I'm up to 3.5 k now - with serious effort /red face etc so, no I wouldn't manage 5k right now, though weirdly I cycle to work sometimes which is 7 miles and includes some pretty dreadful hills but it doesn't kill me the way running does

Doesn't mean you can't do it though - couch-to-5k is supposed to take 9 weeks, so I'm clearly a slow learner when it comes to fitness
