to ask if you would be able to run 5k?

DP and I had a breakdown about how fat we've got and registered for parkrun at 9am tomorrow.
DP will probably be fine, however I have never been a runner and now 5k seems like a lot.
I'm still in my twenties, was never the best at PE in school but not in anyway unwell or particularly unfit I suppose.
Would you be able to run 5k? And will I be able to with training whatsoever realistically? Or is it a fry up in bed kind or morning instead? Grin

Another who recommends Couch to 5k. I’m a running coach and my current C25Kers are on week 3, they don’t think they will run 5k by the end of the course but they will.

I started with C25K and now have run numerous races including 2 marathons.

Onceuponacheesecake · 29/03/2019 22:42

No. I did complete c25k but while I could run 35 mins at the end of it, I wasn't running 5k! That was 4 years ago, I couldn't do 2 minutes now. Good luck op

DramaAlpaca · 29/03/2019 22:43

I could after I did C25K a few years ago, but I couldn't do it now. I must take it up again, I loved it.

CarolDanvers · 29/03/2019 22:48

Yes. I used to run 10-12 km four times a week. I lost my fitness when ill and always feel so unfit and dissatisfied with my exercise levels but I could still get up and run 5km right now so I suppose it's not so bad really.

Langrish · 29/03/2019 22:50

yABVU has f you think you can run 5 with. no training. You might manage walking. Your legs/lungs might not be the problem, blisters and your feet will.

I’ve walked at least 8 miles most days for 5 years now, 10 at weekends. I did the moonwalk a couple of years ago in just over 6 hours (ok, that’s a boast Grin). It took me 8 months of intensive training to get there. running is a whole different ballgame and I couldn’t manage a 5k run.
But park run is great .... because you don’t have to run! Get round whatever way you’re comfortable with, have fun, enjoy and then keep going. You'll be so glad you did.

Langrish · 29/03/2019 22:51

“If you”, not “has f”. My fingers need more exercise!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 29/03/2019 22:56

I can jog 5k - i don't think moving at 7min/km counts as running, really. there's no way I could have done so without building up to it - I'm another c25k graduate.

SurgeHopper · 29/03/2019 22:57

Tomorrow?

Doubt it

Iblinkedandiamold · 29/03/2019 23:03

Benn doing the park run since October and I still can't run the whole thing. I have gone from walking to running about 3km depending on how I feel on the day. My first park run I did a time of about 48mins. Now I am doing it in 30/31 mins. 33 mins on a bad day. I love it. I also do a Boot camp and now do excersise 4/5 days a week. Was never really into it before. Used to walk in the summer time when off work but that more to just get out of the house. I am addicted now. Grin

KnitterOfSocks · 29/03/2019 23:07

My first parkrun was about 15 months ago and I did run it all, but it HURT AND I HATED IT.

I'm running the great welsh marathon in 2 weeks so I guess I got over the hatred!

KnitterOfSocks · 29/03/2019 23:09

Sorry 2 years and 3 months ago. Jan 2017 was my first parkrun. Time flies...

missanony · 29/03/2019 23:10

After having done couch to 5k it’s definitely mostly in your head, so yes you can. Run as slow as you possibly can and you’ll do it.

Next time you can work on running fast

Singletomingle · 29/03/2019 23:12

I run around 30k a week around five and half minutes per k I'm around 15 stone.

EstrellaDamn · 29/03/2019 23:13

Honestly? You're asking if you can run 3 miles tomorrow.

You can't. But you can run a bit, walk a bit, and so on until you improve.

anniehm · 29/03/2019 23:23

If I can you can. I'll be waddling around tomorrow morning as I have for 6 months, still really slow but better than nothing.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 29/03/2019 23:24

@PinkSparklyPussyCat, to be fair I think I'd have to as well! (And thanks! Grin)

@Lifecraft, very true but it adds a certain something I thought.

anniehm · 29/03/2019 23:26

I'm just under 40 mins despite not even running at school and being a lot older. Hoping for 36 tomorrow!

anniehm · 29/03/2019 23:28

We should have a mumsnet slow runners club!

woodcutbirds · 29/03/2019 23:36

start slowly, take tiny steps, keep going.

Topttumps · 29/03/2019 23:40

I did a Parkrun after very little training. I used to run for maybe 30 seconds tops and than walk. Somehow managed to do a park run in circa 40 minutes. I was nowhere near last. Atmosphere was amazing.
For disclosure I am officially obese but working on it.

BrightonBB · 29/03/2019 23:41

Check the Facebook group ‘Walking at Parkrun’ for lots of encouraging support.

IncrediblySadToo · 29/03/2019 23:42

No. I walk that every day, but I can’t run it
My knees are screwed 😕

Babynut1 · 30/03/2019 06:58

No not at the moment. I have done though.
Park run is fab. No judgement and lots on encouragement. It absolutely fantastic way to get started into running.
If I were you I’d do your first week walking it to set your first time.
Then as the weeks go on gradually increase the amount of running you do and want him that time get better each week.
In between, download the couch to 5k app, it’s fantastic.
I did this and ended up going a step further and running a few 10ks.

I want to get back into it as I feel really fat and unhealthy.

Enjoy it op xx

ArgyMargy · 30/03/2019 07:08

If you're in your 20's with no health issues and can't walk 5k on the flat in 45 minutes you should be very, very worried. C25K is a brilliant programme and I have a number of friends who would never have thought they could run 5k but have successfully completed it and enjoyed it. The key is building up the running, not trying to do something unrealistic, failing and jacking it in.

Rystall · 30/03/2019 07:25

OP hope you’re awake and going to do this! Parkrun is fabulous. The finishing times at mine are between 16mins ( winner) to 60 mins. You’ll definitely do it within that window. If you’re feeling really intimidated, go find the tail walker - the volunteer who walks at the back with the last walkers. If your DP has run on ahead at least you’ll have company on your walk around. Good advice from Babynut1 too....walk this week, set your time and then each walk take a little bit off. It gets very addictive seeing your time improving bit by bit. With Couch to 5k you’ll be running it in a matter of weeks. Enjoy and let us know how you get on.
