to ask if you would be able to run 5k?

DP and I had a breakdown about how fat we've got and registered for parkrun at 9am tomorrow.
DP will probably be fine, however I have never been a runner and now 5k seems like a lot.
I'm still in my twenties, was never the best at PE in school but not in anyway unwell or particularly unfit I suppose.
Would you be able to run 5k? And will I be able to with training whatsoever realistically? Or is it a fry up in bed kind or morning instead? Grin

It does not matter if you can currently run 5k. What matters is running what you can, walk if you need to but keep going week after week and give it a little while and then you will run 5k easy.

Yes I can. I can actually just about hack a 15k now but it wasn’t always that way and I’m not naturally sporty :)

TheCanyon · 29/03/2019 21:16

Not unless it was an emergency. I was having a water fight with the neighbours kids last year and ran full pelt about 300 meters, my arse and thighs were so dead the next day and the next and the next...

My friend has been running for a couple years now alongside a diet and gas lost a shit load of weight. Shes always sharing sponsored runs asking if anyone wants to join in, every cunting week after a couple of wines im tempted to say yes.

Obsidian77 · 29/03/2019 21:17

I can't due to medical reasons.
Parkrun is great, a really friendly vibe and loads of people walk it. Well done for signing up, let us know tomorrow when you've done it.

Wondermoomin · 29/03/2019 21:17

Yes I can run 5k (and more) but couldn't always.

Go along tomorrow, but with a plan to run/walk intervals - eg a minute of each or whatever you're comfortable with. Run a bit slower than you think you can do. I echo others' recommendations to follow a C25K type plan.

Go for it!

NannyR · 29/03/2019 21:17

I did my first parkrun last week, doing my second tomorrow. I power walked most of it and jogged the downhills and finished in 46min. I came in second to last (with the tailwalker) by 8 minutes. Despite that I'm really looking forward to tomorrow! Hoping to get a little bit faster each week.
Check out if there are any other local parkruns as they are all different in terms of how many runners and how fast. There are two near to me - one has hundreds of people taking part with fifty or so people taking over forty minutes, the other one (the one I went to) had around fifty people taking part and most were running.

HarrysOwl · 29/03/2019 21:18

It took me about a month of training to get to jog 5k in 35 mins.

If I were you, just enjoy it, jog 60 seconds & then walk 2 mins. You want to have a good time and not injure yourself! Don't worry if you're last, you're still quicker than those still lounging in bed Grin

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 29/03/2019 21:18

I did race for life last June.Ran most of the way tbh but walked some bits too.Took me 5 weeks to feel ready to do it though.

thecatneuterer · 29/03/2019 21:18

Not even if I were being chased by a pack of rabid wolves. I'm fit. I can dance for hours at a time, but I can't even run for a bus.

Zebedee88 · 29/03/2019 21:18

Ooh I wonder if you're near me! I did my first park run last Saturday and I was one of the 40 minutes or so people! Within 5 minutes I remembered that I'm not a runner Grin I struggled but I kept going and the people there were lovely, really encouraging. I'm hoping to just knock a bit of time off every time I go

Cushellekoala · 29/03/2019 21:19

do parkrun and then have a fry up?
I do parkrun with my 9 year old and then we go for a bacon roll (i was a weirdo who liked cross country at school but I am crap at swimming, netball and just about every other sport you can think of!)
There are super fast people, people who walk the whole way and just about everything else in between.

countdowntonap · 29/03/2019 21:19

Easily. 5km isn’t far, and is over quicker than a regular gym class. You’ll be fine.

Voldethought · 29/03/2019 21:19

Do it! Reasons:

  1. It's fun and nobody cares how long it takes you. That's the point.
  2. 5k is 5k whether you run or walk.
  3. It's also 5k further than 99% of the population will have walked by 10am.
  4. The average person walks at 4mph. So even if you walk all of it, it will only take you approx 45 mins.
  5. You will be so pleased with yourself after.
SileneOliveira · 29/03/2019 21:20

No, because I've had a hysterectomy and my innards would probably fall out through my vagina.

SileneOliveira · 29/03/2019 21:22

Just to add though, i take my 16 year old to parkrun every week. It's NOT a race - that's stressed at the start of each event. It's a fun run. Really, nobody cares if you're first or last.

Kolo · 29/03/2019 21:25

That’s the beauty of a timed park run. Whatever time you do it in tomorrow, I bet you’ll do better the following week. I do run, and one of the things I love about running is how quickly one can improve. I’m all about the short term reward!

You might surprise yourself. When I was in my 20s I probably could get up and run 5km. But these days I need to be running regularly for it not to kill me.

Oh, and don’t just give up when your head tells you to. You’re allowed to slow down or even walk parts of it!

MissCalamity · 29/03/2019 21:28

Hmm, I probably could just about do it - never been a huge fan of running, but surrounded by other people is encouraging.
Don't start off too quickly though, especially if you've not done any exercise for a while!

Teateaandmoretea · 29/03/2019 21:32

Yep I can run jog slowly 5k but I couldn't do it with no training. As others have said, do intervals, it won't make you slower than the 35 minutes - ish speed people who run all the way.

Winegumaddict · 29/03/2019 21:35

I can yes and pretty easily but only because I run a lot. Park run is fun though I don't run it for a time as its hard to get past people and I run with my dog so we stop if she needs to etc. You'll never be last as there's always the tail walker so try it and see. If it's really tough download couch to 5km and build up to it.

iolaus · 29/03/2019 21:36

Define 'run'

Could I walk it? 10000% planning on a 13 mile walk on wednesday during school time

Could I run it at a quick pace? No I'd probably keel over (although I have run it before)

Could I run/jog it - especially when others were around - I suspect so (I know I can do 2-3k and I expect the incentive of people in apark run would keep me going - if not I'd walk a bit then pick up the pace)

birdflyinghigh · 29/03/2019 21:38

You might actually be able to do it, OP. I was a non runner. Cross country made me wheeze at school, although I could cycle miles so not unfit. But the (decades later) found this YouTube clip about Niko Niko technique.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9L2b2khySLE

Found I could run for half an hour (probably longer but I didn't push it) on first trying. Smile Now I run just about every day with a weighted vest!

tryingtorun · 29/03/2019 21:41

Echo what people are saying, just walk/run it. I tail walked last week with 2 ladies of which the younger was in her 60's we did it in 52 mins. Just go for it!

GrumpyMummy123 · 29/03/2019 21:41

Nope.

I've been going to the gym for a few months. Jog every couple of days. But 2-3km of jogging is still my limit. I 'd like to think I could do 5km in 2-3mins jog/ 1-2 mins walk, in about 40or so mins if I put my mind to it - but no idea if I actually could! However, I'd say I'm built for comfort not speed... there's lots of wobbling which I reckon makes it twice the effort, lol!

Although I have been able to in the past, it took several weeks of 2-3 runs per week to get there. A few years ago I even managed a 10km - that took months of training and I still came about 248 out of 250!

OddestSock · 29/03/2019 21:43

Yes, but I've recently completed c25k, and have been doing 3-4 runs a week (not park run, I can't make those because I work on Saturdays)

LuckyLuckyWoman · 29/03/2019 21:44

Parkrun is fab. You can walk the whole thing if you want. They have a tail walker so no one ever comes last :)

I'll be there running it tomorrow. Just one of the pack, not a serious quick runner:)

Taswama · 29/03/2019 21:45

Yes I can, I do park run about once a month and run on my own in between. Couldn’t run more than about 500m when I started in my 20s though.
