Frozen vegetables are the best thing since sliced bread

I was going to say 'the dog's bollocks' but then I felt that would be unappetising.

Seriously though, I LOVE them. I have a 5 mo and previous pattern of buying fresh vegetables just keep meaning we'd drag ourselves to the fridge, open it, stare bleakly in and then order a takeaway, and a week later throw away the soggy puddles of courgettes etc.

I've made chicken fajitas with sliced frozen peppers and onions, chilli and this evening made a very successful shepherds pie utilising a casserole mix. Tell me your frozen veg recipe discoveries? I need to continue converting she.

I'm a Sainsbury shopper but buy all my frozen from Tesco as the choice is far better there.

A lot of research is actually stating that frozen or tinned veg is better than 'fresh' as it's frozen fresh so keeps its nutrients. Where a lot of so called fresh produce is kept cold in warehouses for weeks. So lose nutrients.

littledoll33 · 30/03/2019 10:28

I have heard that many times @LoubyLou1234

Love them for stews and casseroles. Morrisons do a great base mix of frozen veg (diced onion, celery and carrot) I use this for everything. Frozen butternut squash so much easier, brilliant for soup.

BertieBotts · 30/03/2019 10:30

The Bird's Eye microwave steam fesh bags are excellent - they are not soggy and they taste better than fresh IME. For when you want steamed/boiled veg anyway.

Whatsername7 · 30/03/2019 10:31

Absolutely love frozen veg. I buy onions, peppers and mushrooms fresh, but the rest, frozen all the way. Dh wants sweetcorn, dd7 broccoli and the baby only wants carrots - no freaking problem!

Celticrose · 30/03/2019 10:56

I made a sausage casserole yesterday with frozen onions and peppers. So handy especially the peppers which obviously work out a lot cheaper. Going to try others as usually I just kept frozen peas in the freezer. Had stopped buying whole onions and was buying already chopped fresh onion but frozen much handier and more convenient. Though maybe not when doing fried onions for BBQ

Cwtches123 · 30/03/2019 11:49

I love farmfoods for frozen veg. 5 large bas for £4. The broad beans are lovely, I also stock up on leeks onions casserole mix etc and use a lot if it in soups.

PinkBuffalo · 30/03/2019 11:56

I agree! now I live alone, it's much easier cooking for one with frozen veg such as Carrot, mushroom & onion. Just chuck in what you need!

tablelegs · 30/03/2019 13:11

Totally agree op, so easy to Chuck a few bags in the freezer and get them when you need them.

The only veg I like freshly chopped is onion.

Frozen mash is a godsend.

SingaSong12 · 30/03/2019 13:16

Thanks for the tips about onions.

Frozen peas are better then the fresh ones that I can buy (I don’t have a garden/allotment). No qualities as an ice pack though as my freezer turns them into a block that won’t go round any bruise.

TatianaLarina · 30/03/2019 13:31

I haven’t had fresh veg since the 1990s! Frozen veg all the way.

Ugh. Frozen is nothing like as nice as fresh, and there’s so much ready prepared stuff now there’s no excuse.

gamerwidow · 30/03/2019 13:37

I love frozen veg. No wastage, no preparation time and very often has more nutrients than fresh due to the freezing process. Most veg is just as good frozen as it is fresh , not brussells though they're gross if frozen.

TatianaLarina · 30/03/2019 13:40

There is no frozen veg that is as good as fresh. Some is passable like peas - but most is a bit ick and devitalised.

IAmAPersonToo · 30/03/2019 13:50

Frozen veg is great for a quick and healthy soup (as they’re blended up anyway - incredibly quick and tasty!)

I wouldn’t want to eat most frozen veg as veg though - no where near as nice.

Fine in an emergency and I alway have some - but I try not to use it!

littledoll33 · 30/03/2019 17:34

@TatianaLarina and @IAmAPersonToo

You are talking gibberish. All frozen veg is, is FRESH VEG that is frozen and thawed out, and cooked the same as fresh! Confused

Indeed it is often better, as the nutrients and goodness is preserved.

Oysterbabe · 30/03/2019 18:16

Onions and mash now in my tesco basket :) I'm going to need a bigger freezer.

formerbabe · 30/03/2019 18:29

Frozen mash...i use on top of shepherds pie and fish pie. I don't even defrost...just put the frozen blocks on top and bung in oven.

FabulouslyFab · 30/03/2019 18:29

Agree with @littledoll33 - frozen veg is frozen when is fresh so is actually fresher than the fresh veg in the supermarket 😁

SrSteveOskowski · 30/03/2019 18:44

Aldi is brilliant for frozen veggies, and fruit. Their raspberries, blueberries, cherries etc are miles cheaper than Tesco (only other supermarket near me) and the packs are bigger too.
Also their little boxes of frozen herbs for around €1.

Sitdownstandup · 30/03/2019 19:01

I genuinely prefer the taste of frozen green beans and broccoli to fresh. The health benefits are just a bonus.

HoozThatGirl · 30/03/2019 19:04

Has anyone mentioned frozen sugar snap peas? I've only found Birds Eye ones but they are brilliant either as a veg on their own or in a stir fry.

I grow my own veg and fruit and freeze it, just as good.

AgentPeggyCarter · 30/03/2019 19:07

I'm a big fan of the Tesco frozen Mediterranean Vegetables with basil oil. I've spent years buying the foil tray ones for double the price and then watching the courgette go mushy if I don't use them instantaneously. I love them and have never eaten so much veg!

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 30/03/2019 19:09

Herbs freeze just as well as vegetables.

buckeejit · 30/03/2019 22:38

Placemarking. I need to use more as have less time now for cooking & if dc don't notice (dd doesn't like veg anyway).

Enjoying all the recipes!
