He's put up curved trellis all the way along the wall and stapled tatty strawberry netting to the back (our side) of it so he's not overlooked by the houses perpendicular to us.

But it looks horrible from my side. And the trellis has made it very tall.

I'd saved up for a few years to do my garden up a bit this spring and now this has made it look crap. I can't really afford to put something up on my side to hide his netting.

There's fuck-all I can do, I assume - I asked him (nicely) if I could remove the netting and if the trellis would be obscure enough to stop the neighbours overlooking him. He said no, that it was on his property, and that he wasn't going to remove it and that if I didn't like it I could install something on my side to cover it.

Is there anything I can do???

I’d repaint the wall in white. Add some blue glazed plots and grow something up against the wall. Without seeing a better picture I think it’s ok. But I can see it might not be from a different perspective.

6'6", i.e. 2 metres is the maximum permitted height for a fence on a back garden boundary.

HarrysOwl · 28/03/2019 20:03

Percy reversey

Ah, yeah. You might be right.

chillpizza · 28/03/2019 20:04

Looks better than the prison wall it sits on.

Seeline · 28/03/2019 20:06

It it's more than 2m high it requires planning permission.

picklemepopcorn · 28/03/2019 20:08

Paint the wall, and grow things up it.

Heratnumber7 · 28/03/2019 20:13

It would look quite nice if you paint the wall
White and put some plants in pots against it.

Pinotjo · 28/03/2019 20:15

Roll out bamboo is a good idea and it's cheap, less than £15 a roll @ 6 x 6 ft. East to install

yumyumpoppycat · 28/03/2019 20:16

yes I think reverse too -the wall is so ugly - trellis probably would look better without netting though.

brizzlemint · 28/03/2019 20:17

The wall is so ugly that the trellis is the least of the concerns.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 28/03/2019 20:17

Take down the scabby netting and give it back to him and tell him nicely to put it on his own side. Other than that I think it looks nicer than the wall.

clarrylove · 28/03/2019 20:18

Who owns the wall? If you do, and he has fixed the trellis to it without your permission, you can insist he removes it.

PickAChew · 28/03/2019 20:18

Ah, a cinderblock wall, by the look of it. Some well aimed watering and a careful sneeze will have the whole thing down, ugly netting and all.

Agree that bMboo screening is the way to go.

starshollow1 · 28/03/2019 20:20

Sorry OP, YABU.

It's fair enough for him to say you can do something to improve the view from your side if you're not keen.

Bunnyfuller · 28/03/2019 20:21

The trellis looks better than the breeze block wall. Grow something.

Doilooklikeatourist · 28/03/2019 20:21

The plain block wall looks so awful, that the trellis makes no difference
Grow some mile a minute up it , or some clematis , honeysuckle etc and it will be fine ( well much better anyway )

NotWhatWhat · 28/03/2019 20:23

.

Preggosaurus9 · 28/03/2019 20:25

You've saved up to do your garden but can't afford screening? Hmm don't want to spend money on screening more like. Fair play it's a horrible wall with horrible trellis and netting. So spend some money to cover it or get a grip. That's it really. Life is too short!

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 28/03/2019 20:28

Was it just the wall before? It's hard to imagine that looking better tbh

Dotty1970 · 28/03/2019 20:31

Confusedit's made the wall look a bit better!

PETRONELLAS · 28/03/2019 20:31

Paint the wall a darker colour not white. White shows all the muck.
I think the trellis is utterly hideous and feel your pain. A simple wall at least isn’t pretending to be anything fancy!

Treefloof · 28/03/2019 20:32

I thought etiquette was that if you own the boundary you get the ugly side of any fence?
If you put up the fence with your own money you choose which side you see. I have always chosen the "pretty" side.
If its jointly funded between neighbours, you discuss it I guess.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 28/03/2019 20:32

As PPs have said , it looks better than just that white wall .

MyKingdomForBrie · 28/03/2019 20:34

Put some cheap trough pots up there with cheap and cheerful climbers in. Something like Passion flower will grow like a weed in no time.

Ellieboolou27 · 28/03/2019 20:38

I’d be more depressed looking at that wall, it’s depressing!
