personally I would have kicked the dog and then described this as a way of 'communicating' my feelings towards it. Or maybe I would have kicked the owner instead.

Doberman's are lovely dogs, nothing to be scared of at all unless they have been deliberatly trained to be aggressive. We are hopefully getting one soon if we can find one looking for a home.

I wouldn't assume that a dog growling at me was trying to communicate friendly feelings, MF. I would think a growling dog would be communicating barking, chomping or chasing feelings.

FWIW, I don't necessarily think that the lady was stupid, but if I had been in Yorkshire's place I'd have been thinking the same thing. Kind of a kneejerk reaction when your small child is face to face with a growling dog which has not been properly restrained.

YANBU, but I am not suprised.

Are you sure the dog was growling? Was it baring its teeth?
