Just PMS?

I'm 43 , had four children and suffered with PMS from the onset.

However, recently it seems to have intensified!
It starts a week before my period is due and doesn't subside until 2 days after it's started.

It's difficult to know because I have a lot going on in my life right now, and have been feeling low in general (currently having counselling), but this definitely seems to be hormone related.

Where as I've always got a little emotional in the build up to it, over the past few months that's become much more extreme.
I find myself with tears just pouring down my face and I never really know what has triggered it.
I don't have any control over this and I've taken to wearing sunglasses to avoid any embarrassing waves of emotion while out in public.

I'm also finding that if someone makes an insensitive comment in a jokey way, I can usually just laugh it off, but at this time in the month it gets to me way more than it should do.

My mum began pre menopausal symptoms around the age I am now, but at the moment I have no other symptoms of that, and at the moment my periods are still regular (although some months they can be heavier and more painful than they were previously).

It's getting to the point where I dread that time of the month approaching.

I've read about PMDD and the symptoms definitely fit.
Particularly the anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping and painful joints.

I don't want to waste the GP's time if it's "just PMS" so wanted to ask if anyone else experienced symptoms that were becoming more extreme and if there is anything that you find helps?
