To not know my blood type?

myexisanasshole · 27/03/2019 22:59

So a thread yesterday reminded me that I should update my iPhone with my emergency contacts and the meds I'm on (quite a lot) and it asked my blood type?! I have no idea, asked my mum and she doesn't know either (thanks mum!) am I the only one? If I'm honest o do t know what my children are either 🙄 please tell me I'm not alone!

I didn't know mine until I donated blood, & neither did DH. I think most people wouldn't know routinely. My young adult DC don't know for certain, but it's highly likely they are the same common blood group as DH & me.

MitziK · 27/03/2019 23:04

Only reason I know is because it was written on the front of my maternity notes.

If you ever need a transfusion, they'll always check it without fail, even if you could tell them what it is, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

There's no reason to know your DCs' groups either.

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 27/03/2019 23:04

I don't either. I think they should put it on BCs DLs along with organ donor status. Wouldn'tt help me as I don't drive. The Donor status could be changed on the BC if the child changes their mind as an adult.

Lwmommy · 27/03/2019 23:05

If you still have any of your maternity paperwork its on there. I have the discharge summary sheet and its got blood type then a high level.summary of the labour and baby checks.

FelixTitling · 27/03/2019 23:06

No idea. Don't know the kids or dh either. One of us is quite a rare one I seen to remember.
I can't give blood, dh is scared of needless the kids are too young yet so don't know how best to find out.

myexisanasshole · 27/03/2019 23:13

Glad to know it's not just me! I know they told me when I was pregnant but I can't remember! X

Didn't you find out when you donated blood?

DesparateDino · 27/03/2019 23:16

I only know mine as I am O neg as they make a big deal of it in pregnancy.

BackforGood · 27/03/2019 23:16

No, I don't know mine, nor any of my dcs.

dementedpixie · 27/03/2019 23:18

DH and I only know ours through donating blood

myexisanasshole · 27/03/2019 23:19

I've not donated blood, don't think I can as I'm on Lithium 🤔

My mum told me i was blood type o... got pregnant and found out im b+! Thought i was obv adopted or not my dads until i realised my mum.probably assumed o as its so common.. my boys are both b+ too but no idea about my husband!

recklessgran · 27/03/2019 23:33

I'm O Pos and one of my DD's is A Pos so does that mean DH is A Pos?
No idea about other DD's. I only know mine from when I was nursing and DD's from when she was in SCBU and was cross matched for a transfusion.

Thesearmsofmine · 27/03/2019 23:36

I have no idea of mine or my 3dc’s.

myexisanasshole · 27/03/2019 23:38

I really thought I was the only one!

babyfloof · 27/03/2019 23:44

I only know mine because of pregnancy as it's quite rare so made me interested and look into blood groups. I know DC is the same as this was tested at their birth. I think if my blood group wasn't negative my midwife wouldn't have made me aware. I didn't know this would be an issue in pregnancy.

If there is any doubt on someone's blood group they will always be given O- as this is the only blood group anyone can have. Unless I read wrongly it's the blood which ambulances carry in case of emergency (probably wrong here as I can't imagine an ambulance carry blood just in case. Maybe it's special ambulances)

I suppose it's useful to know but unless you need a blood transfusion, give blood or are pregnant you may never know.

AlexaAmbidextra · 27/03/2019 23:46

Doesn’t matter. If ever you need a transfusion no hcp would take your word for it anyway. Your blood would need to be grouped and cross-matched with any donor blood you may be given.

babyfloof · 27/03/2019 23:46

@recklessgran there is an online calculator which you can use to determine what blood group DH is. It may not give you an exact but gives an idea.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 27/03/2019 23:47

Yanbu. I've been told my blood group/type several times over the years but, like my glasses prescription, it's a piece of information I just cannot retain! I know I'm something negative and thats all.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 27/03/2019 23:47

I found out at my first donation, A+. DM was AB+, quite rare and also made her proof against cholera. No idea what DW and DD are though.

springbreak3 · 27/03/2019 23:48

Didn't know mine til my late 20's when I first fell pregnant. Not sure why they only tell you then!

RainbowMum11 · 27/03/2019 23:50

I know because my DSis has a rare blood type, so she was A for abnormal, I'm O oldie ordinary! Also, gave blood v regularly until I was pg, and also know from my medical notes.

LakieLady · 27/03/2019 23:51

I only found out mine when I gave blood. My mum could never remember it for sure - she knew it was negative but was unsure if it was A or B.

Odd she didn't have more of an idea, really, given that my she was working for the Blood Transfusion Service when she was pregnant with me.

recklessgran · 27/03/2019 23:52

Oooh thank you @babyfloof I'll have a look at that. Very kind of you - I've often wondered.

Longdistance · 27/03/2019 23:52

A resus negative. Only because I had to have the injection in my bum with both pregnancies.
Tbh, I think it should be known early on in life.
