So a thread yesterday reminded me that I should update my iPhone with my emergency contacts and the meds I'm on (quite a lot) and it asked my blood type?! I have no idea, asked my mum and she doesn't know either (thanks mum!) am I the only one? If I'm honest o do t know what my children are either 🙄 please tell me I'm not alone!

I only know mine because somewhere we lived it was a requirement to be printed on the drivers licence so had to have a test to find out. Not 100% sure without checking but blood types might be in kids red books.

babyfloof · 28/03/2019 00:44

@Verynice no positive is the dominant one. If someone's blood double helix is +- or -+ they are positive. Someone has to have -- to be negative. This means if both parents have +- and both pass the - on to the baby that baby will be negative as they have 2 - in their DNA.

If both parents are negative they both have so would only pass the - on to the baby meaning the baby will get

If one parent is and the other is +- the child will have and be negative or have -+ and be positive

babyfloof · 28/03/2019 00:47

Just to add, if both parents are +- they are both positive but if they both pass on the -- the child will be negative. They could also both pass the + on or one parent pass the + and the other pass the - and that child will be positive (as it takes 2 - to be negative overall)

I know mine from donating blood B+. My mum knows her from having a blood transfusion after haemorrhaging post partum, she is AB+. DSis is - (I think A-) as she had to have Anti D when pregnant. Not sure what blood group DDad is but he’s had a few transfusions.

DC have never had blood taken so wouldn’t know their blood groups unless they check it from the umbilical cord?

fatbrows · 28/03/2019 00:52

You can buy blood group testing kits from amazon for around £19

sanityisamyth · 28/03/2019 00:53

@babyfloof blood double helix?

Kinsters · 28/03/2019 00:57

I didn't know mine until really recently when I had some blood tests and got the full report back which showed my blood group. I always knew it was one of the common ones though.

DH came across his old health records and they had his blood group written in. Both O+

babyfloof · 28/03/2019 00:58

@sanityisamyth your DNA is made up of 36 double helix which you get half from your mum and half from your dad. Each little thing which makes you YOU is determined by your DNA. Looks something like this

To not know my blood type?
babyfloof · 28/03/2019 01:01

@sanityisamyth I think blood double helix is a thing, all I know is blood is ++, , +- or -+ and only those with are rh-.

I'm far from a scientist that I can possibly be so just trying to explain it in a way I understand it. No doubt someone with an actual science degree will be along soon to explain it better

Zoflorabore · 28/03/2019 01:02

I didn't know mine until I was pregnant with ds, now 16.
I have a rare type, AB neg and have to have anti D injections when pg. I've got 2 dc and the needle seemed to get bigger each time!

I had to have a blood transfusion after ds and was told that I should really become a donor as my type is not common and could really help someone else out. I've donated several times but not for a while so this thread has prompted me to do it soon.

Both of my dc are positive but I can't recall the letter.
My late dgm always used to say to me as a child that I had a "funny" blood group as I was so pale. She was right.

SurgeHopper · 28/03/2019 01:03

I'm ab+

Rare but not precious

sanityisamyth · 28/03/2019 01:04

I'm aware of genetics but it's nothing to do with the double helix. It's that there are 2 copies of each chromosome. You essentially inherit from chromosome from each parent which happens due to meiosis producing gametes. Where do you get 36 from? There are 23 pairs of chromosomes so 46 in total. I've literally never heard of anyone talking about the helix for genetics before and I have a biology degree and been teaching 13 years

YouBumder · 28/03/2019 01:06

I don’t think it’s unreasonable, I know mine due to blood donation and then pregnancy but I can’t see my life would have been adversely affected if I didn’t know, and if I needed medical help, it would have been found out then!

I am B+, my sister and mum are both O+ so I guess that means my dad must be B+ or AB+? No idea if that’s right!

My DH is A- so I think that means our children could be absolutely any blood group, positive or negative

Boredgiraffes · 28/03/2019 01:06

Nope no idea, despite several ops. Maybe I should ask!

YouBumder · 28/03/2019 01:13

Oh no wait I think it must mean my dad is also B, he couldn’t be AB if my sister is O, same as our mum? Confused!

LucyBabs · 28/03/2019 01:16

I'm ab- as was my Mam. Both my dc are rhesus neg not sure which group though. I was only given anti d on my second pregnancy which ended in still birth. After I had my son they tested the cord blood so i didn't need the anti d.
I have a friend who is r- as is her Mam and sisters and her Dad is positive

babyfloof · 28/03/2019 01:19

@sanityisamyth I knew someone with better knowledge would be along before too soon! As I said in the thread this is what I clearly poorly understood in my internet research Grin

Verynice · 28/03/2019 01:23

I'm O- and my mother is O-. What does that make my Dad?
No idea what my siblings are.

babyfloof · 28/03/2019 01:26

@Verynice try this www.endmemo.com/medical/bloodtype.php it might help

Korvalscat · 28/03/2019 01:33

I found out my blood group, A neg, when I became a blood donor, but knew I was Rhesus negative when we tested our blood in school as part of biology O level.
Due to a cock up on my dd's notes (someone put my blood group on my O positive DD's notes, luckily it was queried by a Student nurse) so I didn't have the anti-d injection until 48 hours after I should've. This is the only reason I found out DD's blood type as parents weren't routinely informed of their baby's blood group at the time I had DD - I don't know if that has changed now.

ColeHawlins · 28/03/2019 01:40

I'm O- and my mother is O-. What does that make my Dad?

He must be O. No way to tell from that if he's + or -.

Saracen · 28/03/2019 01:40

I only know my blood type from donating blood.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 28/03/2019 01:56

You can buy a finger prick test kit off amazon, for about £5. The one i did said i was O+.

Verynice · 28/03/2019 02:06

Oh - I'm going to buy one now!

NW2SW · 28/03/2019 02:16

Didn't know mine, had a blood test a few weeks ago and asked if they'd find out for me at the same time. They flat out refused
