So a thread yesterday reminded me that I should update my iPhone with my emergency contacts and the meds I'm on (quite a lot) and it asked my blood type?! I have no idea, asked my mum and she doesn't know either (thanks mum!) am I the only one? If I'm honest o do t know what my children are either 🙄 please tell me I'm not alone!

If you really knowledgeable people are around can you please explain the card I was given as a donor B rh + donor but B rh - recipient .
Do I have some rh factor but not much?

Solasshole · 30/03/2019 21:35

@redredrobins some people like yourself produce an incomplete version of RhD . This means that if you donate then your blood has to be classed as RhD+ as even an incomplete RhD will cause someone who is Rh- to react. However if you were given blood of someone who has complete RhD+ you could react to that as your body will notice you are missing some bits of the RhD and therefore see the donor blood as foreign, so you would need RhD- blood yourself if you needed a transfusion.

Thank you after many years it is great to have an answer to that! But what is the Rh factor?

Solasshole · 31/03/2019 10:51

@redredrobins no problem :)

Rh is just a term used to describe a particular blood group. All human blood groups are essentially proteins or other substances that are present on red blood cells. They have normal physiological roles but sometimes there can be different versions of the same protein or individuals can be missing that protein. If an individual is given blood from someone who has a different version of a certain blood group protein to what they have or has a protein they don't have then they can react to that as their body will notice it's not the same.

For the Rh blood groups they are involved in gas transport (CO2, oxygen etc) in/out of the red blood cell.

Found mine out when i was pregnant..also because i had blood transfusion after giving birth

Oldraver · 31/03/2019 11:12

Another o e who found out when she needed Anti-D, bloody painful.

As an aside my blood group is slightly 'confusing'. (Can't think of a way to put it it) I was considered. Positive donor but negative recipient for many years until the Blood people reclassified

Do my first ten donations were B+, the last 41 B- Smile

@Indie139, I had a transfusion too after my csection but don't know if I was told or if I asked. Certainly not on my notes!

The D (Rh) antigen is very complex, I was told by a lab tech. We actually have some women who are Rh+ but have to be treated as Rh- and get the Rh immune globulin anyway.
