What is the point debating the petition to revoke Brexit if the Government has already rejected it?

This is a genuine question...apparently the Government has already rejected the petition even though it is due to be debated. What is the point debating it then, if it has already been rejected in advance?

The petition is edging towards 6 million signatures now....

Apparently they have to when it gets to a certain point

I know. This made me really mad when I got the email yesterday.

However, it did come from the Department for Exiting Brexit, so I guess they have an agenda!

How999 · 27/03/2019 19:08

They are duplicitous fuckers 🙄. It annoyed me too.

And now it looks like loads of ERG people are going to vote for May’s deal because she is going to stand down. For country and party she says - more like for party only.

Appallingly selfish parasites is what they are.

WeCameToDance · 27/03/2019 19:08

These were my thoughts exactly. It all seems a bit odd.

slipperywhensparticus · 27/03/2019 20:12

Is she standing down or is it advisory?

worlybear · 27/03/2019 20:19

May's arrogance is breathtaking.
Really hope she doesn't get her flawed Brexit deal through on the vague promise that she will stand down "sometime."
Hopefully her cronies will not support it on this premise-she's on her way out regardless... remember Thatcher?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/03/2019 20:19

I think by law, if that's the right word. When a petition gets over 100,000 signatures they have to debate it.
That's not to say I'm not in agreement with you, though.
The thing about TM resigning which to some may be very welcome news, and believe me when I say I'm certainly no fan of her's, but Who do we get in her place.
That bloody haunted Pencil.

ethelfleda · 27/03/2019 20:21

I though this too, OP!

And as for May - I have never experience such arrogant single minded stubbornness from one person. I’ll be glad when she is no longer PM.

Livingtothefull · 28/03/2019 18:44

They have posted the Government's response on the petition along with the date it is to be debated....which makes the outcome of the latter look like a foregone conclusion.

They couldn't be discouraging people from continuing to sign the petition, surely not? It is edging towards 6 million signatures now.....
