to ask of your experience of a 'thick lining of the womb'?

So I've been bleeding more or less for about 6 months (occasionally heavy like a period, occasionally clots and in between, just a low level constant light bleeding).

Was referred for an US (Trans abdominal and trans vaginal) which I've had, where the sonographer said that 'there is nothing physically wrong - no mass, no polyps, no fibroids'. I asked was cervix ok and she said yes, everything is fine, it's just the lining of the womb is thick. I asked her what that means and she said it should clear out after a period and that perhaps it was hormonal.

Anyway tonight, not sure why, but bleeding is ongoing and haven't actually heard anything, so I googled 'thick lining of the womb' and managed to find the charity called Eve - which deals with womb cancer.

As you can gather, at 2am in the morning, it's not really the best to be googling!

So, given the scan and that no mass was shown (I assumed she was referring to fibroids or something), does that mean I have the all clear?

Haven't heard a think back, but I suppose it was only about 2 weeks ago. The sonographer had said at the time that they'd probably call me back in 5-6 weeks.

So now I'm thinking - wtaf? The other thing is that the blood stinks to the high heavens. Utterly stink. I'm in constant mild pain, but nothing remotely worth writing home about on the pain scale - just constant pain really.

AIBU to ask you to tell me that you've had similar and that all was good?

No, I had my DS and then a few months later this all started. Its been nearly 3 years since the diagnosis now. I'm due to go for an ultrasound soon to see how everything is. We would like another dc at some point in the future but not sure if it's possible yet.

MontanaSky · 26/03/2019 13:17

Oh my goodness I'm experiencing similar symptoms without the smell.
I've had a transvaginal scan which shows I have a bicornuate uterus and it reads as bulky.

I'm being referred to gynae at the hospital for further investigation in May.

Good luck and hope you get sorted soon!

Jenb2104 · 26/03/2019 13:19

I'm not sure about standard tests. Did they check your FSH & LH?

Werkit · 26/03/2019 13:19

I had this on ultrasound - it turned out to be adenomyosis (but I had to fight to be listened to). Eventually diagnosed by laparoscopy, I had a hysterectomy last year at 35 years old - everything is much better now.

More likely to be something like this than cancer, so try not to worry too much, but definitely push to get it checked out.

ElspethFlashman · 26/03/2019 13:25

Like Jen my bleeding issue turned out to be endometrial hyperplasia.

It wasnt diagnosed after vagina ultrasound, it was only diagnosed cos that showed an innocent polyp, I was sent for a hysteroscopy to remove that, and once they had a look in they recognised hyperplasia and took a biopsy. That returned as normal.

Treatment was Mirena insertion. That Mirena hurt me though and after about 6 months my consultant replaced it with another one (another hysteroscopy). That showed that whilst the Mirena had been pinching me, it had actually done its job and my lining was now perfect.

About a year later I decided to TTC. My GP removed the Mirena and between my new lovely womb lining and the lovely perfect hormonal environment the Mirena left behind, I was pregnant literally a couple of weeks later.

I was told though my lining would grow back and so after my second child I got the Mirena put back in after about 4/5 months. I intend to keep it in/keep replacing it every 5 years for peace of mind.

I haven't had a period in 2 years. It's life changing.

Cocolepew · 26/03/2019 13:30

I had endo and had the hysterectomy due to adenomyosis, there was never a bad smell.
I got the adeno diagnosis after going private to a gynae. I was told it was a bladder prolapse by a dr before that even though I had already had my prolaspe repaired with mesh not long before .
I got very swollen. I looked 9 months pregnant .

Verynice · 26/03/2019 16:44

I don't know what they've checked for - I presumed that given I've heard nothing back about the blood results that all was ok.
Still haven't had phonecall from GP. Tried ringing and it's engaged constantly.

Am now bleeding through pads and super tampons onto my cushion. The smell is metallic? It's disgusting.

Could you have pcos op?

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 26/03/2019 17:20

I’m going through this at the moment. I was referred for heavy bleeding had hysteroscopy and biopsies (results normal), polyp removed, ultrasound scan which revealed 24mm thick lining. Just had a colposcopy yesterday to rule out cervical cancer.

I’m on norethisterone, since October, which has stopped the bleeding. Back to see Gynie next month to look for a permanent solution. Don’t want to stop on norethisterone forever.

They think mine is hormonal, I’m 49. Caused by too much oestrogen production.

I’d say you need a referral back to Gynie. My bleeding never smelt though, just flooding and massive clots.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 26/03/2019 17:22

Your Dr needs to prescribe you norethisterone to stop the bleeding, sounds like you’re at risk of becoming anaemic too. I was.

Cocolepew · 26/03/2019 17:24

Blood can smell metallic, maybe you are only aware of the smell because there's so much

Verynice · 26/03/2019 17:26

Ok, finally got the younger male GP.

He thought I was ringing about antibiotics (I was - as they previously thought it was a vaginal infection), so hadn't looked at my file at all.

I mentioned the two potential diagnoses you have given me endometrial something or another and andemymosis or whatever that one was. I said I was concerned that it may not be an infection at all and that both those conditions can cause an odour.

He then very annoyingly told me to get an STD check (last one was 2 years ago). Then he looked at the scan and said they had recommended a scan in 3 months! Nothing terribly wrong there he said. They appeared to have on the notes that I had a discharge, not constant bleeding.

I said I'm not happy and repeated your unpronounceable potentials to him, that I've been bleeding constantly for 6 months so he is referring me for an urgent gynae appointment (2 weeks he said).

I had to argue with him. Which I'm not happy about.

And now I still don't have antibiotics in case it is a blooming infection. There's a sexual health clinic I can go to - it's a walk in and wait one - so I suppose I'll do that tomorrow.

Thank you for your support. I know (not just suspect), I would have been ignored if I wasn't persistent, armed with your information. Thank you!

Just been told I have adenomyosis so watching with interest. Would love any helpful advice or experience with it.

Verynice · 26/03/2019 17:32

The sonographer said my ovaries were fine LoopLou6.

I presume that means I can't have PCOS?
I must admit I know F all about gynae issues.

Definitely keep pushing to get through at the doctors. It sounds like there are a few things they haven't ticked off yet. Do they have online booking at your surgery?

They probably won't prescribe norethisterone or tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding due to the clot risk, but there may be other options. Emphasise the impact the endless bleeding and uncertainty is having on you - not all of them get it.

Best of luck.

Verynice · 26/03/2019 17:36

Hi @PosterPostingPosterishly and welcome to the thread!

The ladies have given some good advice on here - hope they can help you too! Can I ask what your symptoms are (out of my own curiosity)?

There are 2 posters I think who have posted who have had your diagnosis. Can I also ask what the whole diagnostic process involved?

Hope all is good!

OP posts:
daydream123 · 26/03/2019 17:37

Ahh, cross posted there.

Two week wait means they are taking it seriously - they only use that for cases where there is a chance it could be cancerous (even if very remote - don't want to worry you). You shouldn't have to fight for proper care though! I'm cross on your behalf. Try and get anything else they suggest tested and checked, it speeds things up further down the line if your consultant knows all options have been explored.

PosterPostingPosterishly · 26/03/2019 17:40

Hi!

Heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods. Pain during and after intercourse. Pain during ovulation. Pain during mensturation.
Bloating, IBS diagnosis.

I had a TV scan and he said my womb is bulky and my ovaries are hidden. Hysteroscopy next and Hysterectomy if I can't get on top of symptoms.

daydream123 · 26/03/2019 17:42

Couple of other things

Probably no need to worry about pcos. I would think highly unlikely if you don't have any ovarian cysts.

How quickly are you bleeding through pads? If it's more than 1 or 2 an hour at any point, go to A&E.

Verynice · 26/03/2019 17:43

Well I threw out the line - If I'm dead in 3 months from endometrial cancer or womb cancer it will be a bit late won't it? He was all in a fluster and said - normally these are gynae issues - no shit Sherlock!!! Just because it's a gynae issue doesn't mean it doesn't need to be blooming investigated?

Oh men! This is why I was hoping it was the female GP - she's uber thorough - to the point of being a pain in the ass sometimes.

OP posts:
Verynice · 26/03/2019 17:45

No, I think it seems to come in rapid flows that the pads (poundshop ones) and tampons can't cope with all at once, then it stops for 30 minutes and I can feel another gush - and then I've flooded the place again. Thank Christ I'm not at work.

MrsCasares · 26/03/2019 17:46

Have they checked your blood for clotting factors as well?

Verynice · 26/03/2019 17:47

@PosterPostingPosterishly Sounds very like my symptoms. Haven't had sex in about 5 months though and it wasn't painful then.

What are they doing about it for you do you know?

OP posts:
Verynice · 26/03/2019 17:48

@MrsCasares I have no idea what they have checked my blood for. I totally forgot to ask about my blood results!

I had thickened lining of the womb. Was on the implant at the time and in places was over 3 times the thickest it should have been, and was constantly bleeding too. Looked completely clear on transvaginal and normal ultrasound other than thickening. This was 15 years of period issues down the line though and had tried pretty much every method they give out. Was told the Mirena was the best solution but I'd had two and my body flushed them out at 4 months both times sorry tmi. Was offered hysteroscopy and lasering the lining off. Whilst in there they discovered polyps and fibroids hidden. Everything tested and was fine, and lasering was the best thing I did. They said I was on the young side and it may come back, but I'm nearly 3 years down the line and it's not haunting me yet.
