@sunnyingrimsby Just checking in - you don't think that electing MPs, most recently on an election about this exact subject is democratic. But a close and disputed indicative vote 3 years ago, that Leave Means Leave wasn't even the official campaign for is?

Yb23487643 · 27/03/2019 21:15

Democracy luckily alive & well. Leavers so desperate in clinging to the crap vote. We all know what would happen if the referendum was repeated now. Leavers so scared. This was always about the rich getting richer & the brexit fiasco has afforded that to them, as will cancelling it now

Yb23487643 · 27/03/2019 21:19

Agree the leavers “anger” would be hilarious. I doubt they’d really drag themselves away from their golf clubs/cruises/holidays to the canaries/bottles of Pinot Grigio to go n protest! They’re roughly 1/4 people at that time & many will have died already.

JuneFromBethesda · 27/03/2019 21:19

I'm glued to the BBC Parliament channel but I wish I understood what the hell was going on

JuneFromBethesda · 27/03/2019 21:20

Oh ok, they're still counting the results of the indicative votes

onegiftedgal · 27/03/2019 21:20

I just want to know the leaving date as obviously we had to cancel the party planned for the 29th.
It will give the remainers a little more time to stock up on their brexit panic cupboards though I guess.
As I've said previously, you vote blue, you get blue and brexit was created by the blues.
I'm a red voter but....after brexit finally happens and all the happy excitement has died down, I feel that I might reconsider. Brexit has done wonders for conservative votes.

Democracy luckily alive & well.

Other than the political marches and petitions, how is democracy alive and well?
Our politicians appear to be falling over themselves to have their vote bought.

We all know what would happen if the referendum was repeated now. Leavers so scared.

This would be a referendum that doesn't appear to be happening at all, because the government has turned it down at every opportunity?

This was always about the rich getting richer & the brexit fiasco has afforded that to them, as will cancelling it now

As a great man once said "welcome to the party pal" are you only just starting to see this now. Some of us have been pointing this out for years (even before the referendum).

brizzlemint · 27/03/2019 21:22

Delayed until April 12th or May 22nd. 336 majority.

StealthPolarBear · 27/03/2019 21:23

"This post is hilarious! The average age of a Brexiteer is 70."
Not up here in the NE. I am worried. Off to watch again

SunnyInGrimsby · 27/03/2019 21:24

@sussexman - all the major parties insisted in their manifesto that they would honour the vote, but this hasn't happened.

The people are sovereign, not Parliament. MP's are elected to fulfil the will of the people. They haven't done this.

Leave Means Leave is not a political party. It is a group set up to hold MP's to account. It is an amazing grassroots campaign funded and supported by honourable people who believe in democracy.

I will be marching on Friday from Fulham to Parliament Square along with many other democrats.

StealthPolarBear · 27/03/2019 21:24

Why is that nit bbc breaking news?!

whee2y · 27/03/2019 21:26

I'd have thought just as many remainers would have died through the blind panic and fear they've been living through bless em
How any remainers can bleat about democracy in one breath and then try and deny it to the Leave voters really makes me wonder

PortiaCastis · 27/03/2019 21:27

I can't see any breaking news either

brizzlemint · 27/03/2019 21:27

April 12th is a ridiculous date - last day of the school term just before thousands/millions go off on holiday to Europe.

All Leavers, it is worth checking out the SDP, which is now the only Brexit supporting party:

SDP STATEMENT ON BREXIT DEBACLE
Following Theresa May’s failure to guarantee leaving the EU even on her delayed date of April 12, SDP Brexit spokesman Patrick O’Flynn said:
“It is now quite clear that the Westminster establishment parties are out to thwart Brexit altogether. Effectively the votes of 17.4m people have been stolen and are now to be destroyed.
“The Tories, Labour and all the establishment parties have decided to trash democracy by reneging on election pledges to respect the referendum verdict.
“It is a staggering spectacle to behold. I urge voters to resolve not to vote for any party that countenances any further delay to a full WTO Brexit. Parties that do not respect your vote do not deserve your vote.
“The SDP is the party to join and support for all Leave voters who wish to see the result of the referendum implemented, investment in public services increased on the home front and no quarter given to extremism.”

I voted leave. I'm not scared of a second ref. why would I be? I will just use my one vote as I judge best for me and my family, as I did last time. A second vote would not diminsh democracy, it might however, diminish the carping and in fighting that's going on. Cancelling it unilatterally would be the end of democracy in my eyes though. My only fear is the margin being the same, in reverse. If that happens we would have tto have another referendum, because why should the remain camp be able tto say the margin was ttoo tight but not Leave voters? I also hate the 'some people were too young to vote and it effects their future!" lament, because that was the same when we went in. However, we went in, witthout a second ref. So it should not be a factor in deciding whether we have a second ref. now.

sussexman · 27/03/2019 21:36

@sunnyingrimsby it was easy to promise to "honour the vote" and indeed both parties can say they have. The vote hardly considered a customs union ( find a reference in www.voteleavetakecontrol.org/key_speeches_interviews_and_op_eds.html ) and certainly never mentioned the Belfast agreement.

Specifically, the Leave campaign said (www.voteleavetakecontrol.org/a_framework_for_taking_back_control_and_establishing_a_new_uk_eu_deal_after_23_june.html) that the negotiations should be cross-party and consensus-driven based on the input from civil society. It didn't happen, and not a single Leaver has campaigned for it since.
