Am I the only person to think After Life is a total pile of wank?

Mawkish. Hateful character who was a cunt even before his wife died and even worse afterwards. Every sentence a crap cliche. And lecturing like a badly written advice column.
Utter drivel. Why are people raving about it?

I did watch it through, but the more I think about it, the more I felt that, of all the people who might have explored the idea that grief makes the bereaved behave like arseholes, Ricky Gervais would be the last one I would choose.
To me, a lot of it felt cynical, heartless, and opportunistic. The entire scenario with the drug addict made me think that he'd decided to explore this dramatic avenue because it would be shocking and provocative, but it just felt unbelievably hollow and tasteless, completely detached, lacked any sense of heart or compassion.
By the end, it was even worse. He handled the notion of redemption in The Office brilliantly because it was so much more of an ensemble and redemption came through the humanity and brilliance of Martin Freeman's performance. Once he's centre-stage in this, though, redemption landed with all the subtlety of thirty tons of saccharine.
Penelope Wilton is wonderful in everything she does, though.

Because they are annoyed that he's taking up valuable tv time that could be used for re-runs of Are You Being Served and On The Buses

Having never watched either of those I can honestly say they have no bearing on my dislike of him

I think its brilliant. Lots of people don't 'get it' like many didn't get Derek.
The writing is clever and the humour often dark but it resonates with many people.
I suppose if you like it, it's difficult to see why others don't and vice versa.

I've seen both, being mid-fifties, and ... actually, I've got no idea what this poster's point is. If you don't like Ricky Gervais, then you must be someone who likes AYBS and OTB? What kind of weird point is that to make? Ricky Gervais seems unpleasant to me, and that feeling taints everything he does, despite the fact that he's clearly very, very clever indeed. AYBS and OTB were shit then, shit now. Honestly, that is just the most bizarre comment I've read today, and I've been on a Brexit thread.

I enjoyed the first few episodes and found them really funny but it went quite corny by the end
