Am I the only person to think After Life is a total pile of wank?

Mawkish. Hateful character who was a cunt even before his wife died and even worse afterwards. Every sentence a crap cliche. And lecturing like a badly written advice column.
Utter drivel. Why are people raving about it?

Not massive fan of RG normally. He speaks very well on animal issues and religion though I think.
Watched all of this over two sittings thought the part where he gives suicidal man money to buy drugs and tells him not to waste it on food stunning so honest.
When he shouts at the boy he probably wasn’t there bit of editing and RG just shouting over the fence. I say 7/10.

MaMisled · 25/03/2019 11:37

Hated it. Poor imitation of Jack Dee, I thought. Brandy the dog was wasted in such a crap, cliched, weak programme.

outpinked · 25/03/2019 12:07

Really liked it but then I am a fan of Gervais.

DaiStation · 25/03/2019 12:37

Liked it up til the last 2 episodes whrn I suddenly realised representation of women was totally shite. They were all there to rescue him in some way - in ep 1 his wife made reference to him being crap at life admin etc then paod the sex worker to do all the cleaning which she didn't mind, he basically harassed the nurse...I could go on.

MrsAitch13 · 25/03/2019 13:01

I am very recently a widow and I loved it. Watched the whole series in one sitting and thought he captured the emotions beautifully.

Pk37 · 25/03/2019 13:18

I liked the first episode but why is all of his stuff so fucking miserable .
He’s the same character in everything he’s ever been in .
Total wank

ScrewyMcScrewup · 25/03/2019 13:22

It's brilliantly written and acted.

Lifecraft · 25/03/2019 13:33

In the show, the tubby little ginger cunt ends up with an original 70s Raleigh Chopper, which sell on Ebay for about £2K these days, so he doesn't do badly out of it!

Whether you like or dislike RG, at least he's prepared to tackle issues in his work that most people are too scared to touch with a bargepole. Afterlife, Derek and Extras all have that in common. As do the stand up shows.

I'm glad about that. We have enough people on tv playing it safe.

Rockmysocks · 25/03/2019 14:44

Watched on Netflix. Thought we'd just watch first episode but ended up watching the lot in one go and really enjoyed it.

thelikelylass · 25/03/2019 22:14

Violet25 - that is shit for you and Mr Violet25, that is very moving that you watched it together.
I found it warm and moving, and I laughed at Gervais gagging. He does pathos very well and I admire him for that.

Redglitter · 25/03/2019 22:15

Personally I think anything with RG in it is a total pile of wank

Whatsforu · 25/03/2019 22:22

The people who only watched 1 or 2 episodes of course you are not getting it!!!! You have to watch the whole thing!!! I thought it was brilliantly done. RG genius.

DizzyPhillips · 25/03/2019 22:34

I love it. I love him. I think he’s brilliant.

🙄 to the people saying she should have left him anyway. She quite clearly enjoyed the jokes. That was their relationship.

grafittiartist · 25/03/2019 22:40

It was the constant use of the c word that put me off. Didn't start episode 2.

Tunnockswafer · 25/03/2019 22:53

Mumsnet has hardened me to constant use of the c word Grin

ralphfromlordoftheflies · 25/03/2019 23:19

Why do so many people dislike RG?

grafittiartist · 26/03/2019 07:18

Tunnocks 😆

zingally · 26/03/2019 07:26

I liked it, but I didn't LOVE it. There were lots of bits that made me chuckle, and a few bits that made me tear up (but I can't remember which bits they were now, so they obviously weren't that meaningful).

Personally, I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as 'Derek', which was genuinely moving. There are parts of that series that I still think about.

I think what missed the mark for me, was what a tosser he was, just because his wife had died. You know, lots of people lose family members in tragic circumstances, but don't go around being awful to everyone, just because that's their excuse.

I'll watch another season, if it comes, but I don't think I'll re-watch sesason 1, like I have with other series' by Gervais.

RMogs · 26/03/2019 07:48

Neither DH or I would normally watch RG, but we have so far seen the first 2 episodes and enjoyed them.

I don't know if the pranks get worse through the series, but so far I haven't seen anything terrible that would deserve a LTB? Or am I missing something?
I also don't care about the c word... maybe being a youth worker hardened me, but at the end of the day, it's just a word to me (not one I would choose to use, but not one
that causes me personally any offence or emotive reaction)

Stormyday · 26/03/2019 07:53

I enjoyed it. I liked all the characters and had a good blub at the end.

crispysausagerolls · 26/03/2019 07:58

It made me laugh out loud and cry, and I generally enjoyed it. However, I agree with a PP that it was trope after trope after trope; by the end of episode 5, the 1000th time Ricky was having the same conversation with almost the exact same dialogue with Mrs Crawley, I started to see through it a little bit. Episode 6 was fairly unbearable just for sheer cliche and cheese.

ScrewyMcScrewup · 26/03/2019 07:59

No, you're not missing anything. Just people unable to see that some enjoy practical jokes. I mean, I don't, but Lisa (?) clearly did.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 26/03/2019 08:02

I watched them all last week. I'm not a RG fan, watched The Office, got bored in Extras and couldn't even start on Derek. I thought After Life was the best thing he's done. It made me laugh and cry, it was well thought out and full of humanity.

Lifecraft · 26/03/2019 12:19

Re the c word, to quote RG himself:

"People who are offended by the c word would hear it a lot less often if they didn't go around acting like such cunts."

Lifecraft · 26/03/2019 12:24

Why do so many people dislike RG?

Because they are annoyed that he's taking up valuable tv time that could be used for re-runs of Are You Being Served and On The Buses.
