Am I the only person to think After Life is a total pile of wank?

Mawkish. Hateful character who was a cunt even before his wife died and even worse afterwards. Every sentence a crap cliche. And lecturing like a badly written advice column.
Utter drivel. Why are people raving about it?

Also I think it carries a powerful message about how seeking unhealthy sources of numbing grief can destroy someone completely. Gives a little insight into how some end up on that horrible downward slope

Giggorata · 25/03/2019 09:40

No!
This review says it all for me..

I enjoyed it, but I think you have to watch it all the way through. If you were to only watch the first episode you could come away with the idea that Tony is just a tosser.

MuseumofInnocence · 25/03/2019 09:43

sorry, by the delivery man, are we referring to the newspaper delivery man, not the postman. That was the only bit I find difficult (I think the fourth episode)

chocolatelog · 25/03/2019 09:44

Me and dh watched it last week and really liked it. Not a massive RG fan but watched his standup that's on Netflix and loved it.

sewingismyhobby · 25/03/2019 09:44

I enjoyed it particularly the final episode but can't see how they can do a second series?

Diemme · 25/03/2019 09:48

I'm also really curious to know what processes would have been in place for casting the child who gets insulted. Would parental consent get obtained at the auditions for your child being called a tubby cunt?!

JellyNo15 · 25/03/2019 09:49

Not a Ricky Gervais fan but I thought After Life was his best work since The Office, really enjoyed.

Bartlebysleftshoe · 25/03/2019 09:50

No- I wouldn't say I am normally a RG fan, but I enjoyed it, went from sobbing to laughing in a heartbeat. I think that you have to watch all 6.

Grief turned my DM into someone very difficult to be round for awhile and it resonated with me.

The scenes with the paper delivery guy who took drugs was the one that hit me the most - really made me think about the value of life & judgement of others.

I love Roisin Conaty, she is brill in GameFace too, I can't help but watch her.

Costacoffeeplease · 25/03/2019 09:54

Yep I watched the whole thing, in case it got better, but no

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 25/03/2019 09:57

I’m another “ don’t like RG” person. I enjoyed it. Don’t think a second series should be made.

SammySamSam09 · 25/03/2019 10:01

I really enjoyed it.

Reggety · 25/03/2019 10:04

Yes! The kid who gets called a ginger tubby cunt....how do you cast that part?! Do you try and explain that although he is ginger and tubby and everyone’s laughing he doesn’t really mean it like that?!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 25/03/2019 10:05

I'm not a Gervais fan but saw the trailer and thought it looked quite good. Still undecided about watching; mostly negative reviews from mn jury and less than warm critics write ups. It seems to have had more positive reviews from people who don't usually like him, though? I also can't stand Roisin Conarty, not even to look at her so that's probably switched me off.

U2HasTheEdge · 25/03/2019 10:05

I loved it. Loved the ending.

troubleswillbeoutofsight · 25/03/2019 10:05

I loved it

Hyacintharehighersincelasttime · 25/03/2019 10:07

My dh can't stand him, so i might have to watch it on my own, guardian review said to get through the first episode and it gets better.

KaliforniaDreamz · 25/03/2019 10:08

It is awful It has moments of honesty but agree he was a total dick to her when she was alive - all that pranking - frankly i wouldve kicked him out for that alone. Eejit.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 25/03/2019 10:08

I loved it. Went in not expecting anything but found it just perfect. The honesty was lovely; it wasn't 'fluffy' or 'pretty' and that's how grief is; it's revolting and ugly and all those things we try to hide or ignore.

MrsMaryMooFace · 25/03/2019 10:09

I loved it. The way I saw it was that from his wife's videos, she says things like "you're a lovely person" "you're the life and soul of the party", so he WAS a nice person, but the grief from losing her made him horrible. I thought that was the whole point, then we watch him gradually start to get his life back on track towards the end?

CuppaSarah · 25/03/2019 10:11

It's meant to be a big pile of wank though isn't it? Grief is full of clichés and we're not meant to like him. I enjoyed it, but wasn't very moved by it though.

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/03/2019 10:11

I loved it, I have a close relative going through a very similar process of grief so I related to it.

warriorprincessandwidowed · 25/03/2019 10:13

As a widow. He is actually spot on to a degree.

You do want to say fuck you world. This is horrendous and it makes you not more honest but more in the moment of saying shit How it is.

MistakenHoliday · 25/03/2019 10:13

I thought Diane Morgan was woefully underused. The rest I could take or leave 🤷🏼‍♀️

Cheeeeislifenow · 25/03/2019 10:14

@DSHathaway you can't stand Roisin Connerty, even how she looks? That's really mean!
