To think this is Dermatitis Herpetiformis (Coeliac rash?)

Hello,

My boyfriend noticed a ‘rash’ on his lower leg three weeks ago. He says that it’s furiously itchy and is driving him mad.

We’ve tried hydrocortisone cream, but it hasn’t helped. It’s actually getting larger.

He’s being investigated for Coeliac Disease and I wondered if his rash looks like dermatitis herpetiformis? If not, can any one identify it?

Thank you.

I have Coeliac disease and quite honestly I didn’t even know a Coeliac rash was a thing, I’ve certainly never experienced it and it has never been brought up by anyone I have spoken to about their symptoms.

I’m off to google now as I’m clearly quite ignorant on my own medical issues Blush

Sorry I can’t help OP.

Dd has coeliac, it doesn't look like the coeliac rash I've seen.

Fettuccinecarbonara · 23/03/2019 22:52

It looks like shingles to me

dementedpixie · 23/03/2019 22:55

Shingles wouldn't still be there after 3 weeks. Could be a fungal type thing. Has he seen a gp/ pharmacist?

justasking111 · 23/03/2019 22:57

GP for him I think.

Fettuccinecarbonara · 23/03/2019 23:04

Ooops I missed the 3 weeks part! Very unlikely to be shingles!

DH gets this on his hips and drives him bonkers (he’s coeliac and it comes up occasionally) he uses demovate which helps.

InfiniteCurve · 23/03/2019 23:36

It looks like the patches of eczema I'm currently being driven up the wall by to me.
But I don't find hydrocortisone strong enough to deal with it -I have betnovate.
He should go to the GP,there are different possibilities, different treatments,go see someone who can actually help.

TheDarkPassenger · 24/03/2019 11:06

I have CD and usually the rash is way more spread out and more ‘dotty’

Sorry if that doesn’t help but he does need to see a gp

It could be anything! Looks more like a fungal rash to me. My ex had the same rash on his lower legs and tried many creams, but it cleared up naturally in summer. He was constantly scratching and it smelt bad too!

Thistles24 · 24/03/2019 11:53

Doesn’t look like it to me from the pictures. DS has it, and they’re very raised, thick and scabby lesions. Envy not envy!

Draughtincluder · 24/03/2019 12:08

It looks like discoid eczema also called numula eczema ( those spellings might not be quite right. )

Dermovate is the strongest steroid and the only thing that works. It’s only available on prescription and GPs don’t like to give it out because of its strength but you only need a bit of it.

Not a GP or a medic but after DH had it all over his body and the gp couldn’t diagnose it I did a course on Dr Google and I was right.

Looks like dermatitis to me. The doc prescribed me ichthopaste bandages which worked really well for an exceptionally bad breakout last September. You cover the area with the bandage then put a layer of cling film over it and lastly cover it with a crepe bandage. You can buy it on Amazon. Before you go to these extremes though I'd get it checked with the doctor not being medically trained most of us don't know what it is, me included.
