I know this isn't the right place but l didn't get any answers within streamed TV, so apologies.

Currently in process of cancelling Sky in the hope they will reduce the subscription.

However DS1 and 2 have said they want Netflix. They have it at their Dad's already. DS2 has it on his phone via their membership.

I'm trying to figure out how it will all "work" and l need help preferably with pictures as I'm not technically minded.

If l get rid of sky... how will l watch TV? Will l need to get a freeview box (is that the correct terminology??).

My TV downstairs is a Smart TV so l know l can get Netflix on that but the one in my bedroom isn't. So does that mean l won't be able to watch Netflix upstairs?

I have also heard of Now TV and I'm wondering if that is better than Netflix?

You can either access freesat or freeview through your smart tv usually the latter, the instructions for the set (look the make and model up online if you've lost them).

You should be able to play Netflix through your smart tv but you need to be a subscriber it's not expensive especially in comparison to sky!

Netflix is easy to use once set up and logged in.

Re watching upstairs depends on how old upstairs tv is. If it's a big old tube tv then no, if it's more modern you might be able to make it a smart tv by using an Amazon firestick IF It has a USB port to put one in, again you need to check the manufacturers instructions.

Sorry I can't be more help
Now tv I'm not familiar with.

SnapesGreasyHair · 22/03/2019 06:34

Thankyou

Sorry me again.

Just spoke to Sky in the hope they would give me a good offer but nothing!!

I have to return both the boxes so l won't have anything to watch TV through - is that correct?

I am so useless, l do apologise Blush

Downstairs is a smart TV. Will that work?

To watch Bbc1 etc do l need a box of some sort?

If the smart tv has a built in freeview box you can use that....you will still get channels 1 to 5 on your other tv but for any other channels you will need a free view box..if that helps any!!! we do not have a smart tv but we have netflix ..we watch that on our laptops and not the tv....my son has subscribed to them so I am sorry I cant tell you how much netflix is per month...

SnapesGreasyHair · 02/05/2019 11:47

Thankyou for replying. Technology is the only reason I'd actually want XH back in my life....

This is my TV...

If you have a modern flat screen TV it should have a 'set top box' built in so you can watch BBC etc through that.

BUT you need an areal attached to each TV (or something else such as a sky box).

I have a TV aerial into my main TV but not the one in my bedroom as I have sky multiroom.

So for me I would need to connect something for the TV in my bedroom to get a TV signal.

An easy way to check is to turn off your Sky box and see if you can watch TV. You will have to press the button that selects between sky, dvd, freeview. It has a sort of square pattern on it.

SnapesGreasyHair · 02/05/2019 13:04

So does my smart tv need an aerial to access the internal freeview channels?

OP posts:
Noloudnoises · 02/05/2019 13:17

Does your house have a digital aerial on the roof?

If so:

From the aerial point in various rooms you plug in the wire into the tv. Then run auto tune. Then you will get all the freebies channels in your area on your tv.

(If you don't have one, investigate getting one installed and sole aerial points if you don't have any.)

Your tv is a smart tv so there should be a button on the remote that takes you to the 'apps' which is where you'll find iPlayer, Netflix, now tv etc. If they're not there, there should be a little 'app store' where you can search for them and download them.

If all the above works, then get rid of sky, watch free view Tv via your digital aerial, get a Netflix subscription or now tv etc.

Netflix will let x amount people (I think) watch different tv at any one time. So downstairs and upstairs can watch something on Netflix at the same time.

Really disappointing this thread isn't about dance music :(

FlyingMonkeys · 02/05/2019 13:25

We have now tv - we get both the cinema 11.99pmth & entertainment (box sets, GOT, Walking dead) 7.99pmth (although I have currently 3mth free with Mcd monopoly 😊). You just buy a starter box or stick with a 1-3mth voucher (You don't need a subscription so not tied in). We have a box in the living room and one in the bedroom but you can also watch it through Xbox.

FlyingMonkeys · 02/05/2019 13:29

Forgot to say - you can also do a free 14 day trial - our 2nd box I bought for £5 on gumtree as I was already paying for the first box voucher. You can switch to SO from your bank too.

Treaclesweet · 02/05/2019 13:31

Came expecting techno. Was disappointed.

DeegeeDee · 02/05/2019 13:31

Same @LivingDeadGirlUK .

Good luck OP, have no useful advice.

SnapesGreasyHair · 02/05/2019 14:15

@Noloudnoises l do have an aerial on my roof Smile

SnapesGreasyHair · 02/05/2019 18:21

This is the cable sticking through the wall. Is that an aerial cable?

OP posts:
FlyingMonkeys · 02/05/2019 18:41

Yes that's an aerial cable and if your bedroom tv is flat screen it'll likely pick up freeview as the technology started being inbuilt around the same time.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 02/05/2019 18:46

If it’s a smart TV you won’t need an aerial for apps. You just need to connect the TV to your WiFi.

We have a smart TV, no aerial, and use NowTV, plus the usual apps like iPlayer, 4OD, etc.

SnapesGreasyHair · 02/05/2019 19:07

Many thanks everyone.

I have found an aerial cable and have connected the Smart TV to the aerial.

Currently sky box is off and l am seeing if the tv will connect via the aerial

OP posts:
SnapesGreasyHair · 02/05/2019 19:29

Omg... I did it!!

Of course with all your help Star

TV is working via aerial and l have connected it to the broadband.

Netflix is already installed on the TV so l can access that which is good.

OP posts:
SnapesGreasyHair · 02/05/2019 19:31

I now just need to sort the bedroom. I don't have an aerial up there, so would l need tk get a stick like Now TV so l can watch things?

PotsOfJoy · 02/05/2019 19:37

For those anticipating techno:

Mrsfs · 02/05/2019 19:50

For upstairs, if it has a hdmi port, you can get a chromecast or firestick, we have used both and they are great.

FlyingMonkeys · 02/05/2019 19:57

It depends on if you choose Netflix or Now TV really. I'd run the 30 day free trial for Netflix through the smart tv and see if it's what you require first. Google Netflix vs Now TV and see which is a best fit for you. You can buy a Now tv box/stick with a 1mth voucher and if you don't renew it you'll still have access to iPlayer and several other channels. Netflix is cheaper but if you prefer movies it's late to catch up with new releases but cheaper than Now TV. I'd personally trial Netflix via smart telly first free to gauge your opinion and take it from there.

FlyingMonkeys · 02/05/2019 20:03

We also went with now tv as DP previously had Sky and a lot of the shows he watched carry over but I didn't want to pay a Sky price tag.

Noloudnoises · 02/05/2019 20:45

Remember to connect the tv to your WiFi!

I won't be hugely expensive for an aerial chap to come and put another aerial point in your bedroom.

If the tv up there is a smart TV then it can connect to the apps like the one downstairs. And if not then, yes, you need various gadgets that plug into the hdmi ports of the tv, connect to the WiFi and you can access them.
